Trust your eyes.

Dele Alli is our best player so far this season. Our two wins may have been team efforts, squad efforts even, but Dele is the standout performer according to these lot:

I’m afraid I’m still a bit too spaced out to be delving too far into these stats and exactly how they’re gathered, so perhaps some kind souls on here will have a look through and give an opinion as to whether they are really worth anything.

Unk was asking before whether there were any stat sites out there…after the OptaGate farce of yesteryear, I’m often more inclined to trust my eyes as to whether a player is contributing, and in what ways.

So what have yours been telling you? And do they tally with this lot of pseudo-science?

I quite enjoyed my visit to Brentford on my trip accross the pond a couple years ago. And Griffin Park is a pretty nifty old-school stadium. And a pub on each corner.

    • Sexy Beast 22/08/2018 at 10:13 pm

I lived in a house that backed onto the ground for a couple of years, it was 30m from the Griffin pub, i used to cook sunday roast and nip home from the pub and check the spuds whilst getting sloshed. The dinner didn’t always turn out so well, one monday evening i found Yorkshire pudings in the oven that i’d forgotten!

Looks like Brentford are building a new stadium with a projected capacity of 17,250 on a 7.6 acre site off Lionel Road, adjacent to Kew Bridge railway station.

      Another older ground goes away.

      • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 22/08/2018 at 10:09 pm

Insurance is only £85 a year so it costs bobbins to run.

Anyone think Lamela can play the Dembele role?

I quite liked this suggested side, can’t see it happening tho…

    • Flat Oeuf 23/08/2018 at 8:31 am

Interestingly, I think we have options in Mousa’s role: Erikse, Dele and yes, Lamela too. A bit like a 9yo’s side, we have too many players who think they are Strikers (AMs in our case). Someone like Lamela might not get loads of game time as an AM if Eriksen and Alli are starters and he’s vying with Son and Moura for the 3rd spot…so why not play further back?

Drawbacks? Coco has had a propensity to run into trouble and lose the ball and he’s not scared of giving a foul away, sometimes near the penalty area.

      • Chauvelin 23/08/2018 at 8:33 am

That’s a big drawback. He’d be targeted to give away free kicks just outside the area too. Enthusiastic yes, but can he be coached to tackle cleanly?

        • Chauvelin 23/08/2018 at 8:38 am

Anyhow, I thought this was Wink’s role? I’m sure there will be enough matches and enough players needing a break to give Lamela plenty of game time. It look like an overcrowded AM roster today, but that won’t always be the case deep into the season playing those away matches at Rochdale…

          • Flat Oeuf 23/08/2018 at 8:43 am

Ah yes, Winks. He will have to show he’s fully recovered to be trusted with such an important role. People always point to how good he was vs RM, but after his ankle injury he looked very fragile and became so conservative with his passing that he offered very little, from what I saw. I accept he may have still been carrying the injury.

            • Chauvelin 23/08/2018 at 8:48 am

If Winks turns out to be another shadow of his former self, it would be a tragedy for him, and lighting striking twice for Spurs after the long Ryan Mason layoff and exit. Mason was really progressing and then he scored that goal against Sunderland but simultaneously incurring the career wrecking injury. Never the same again.

              • Caspurs 23/08/2018 at 8:52 am

Lamela will be our player of the season, playing as an AM. It’s destiny..

                  That’s the attitude!

After Trippier’s great free kick goal, at least there is competition for Eriksen from him as well as from Kane. We’ve been pretty wasteful from dead balls since Eriksen became a specialist at hitting woodwork and first defenders’ and he could be a major weapon this season. Question is, what happens to Aurier?

Are you sure that’s the same bike!

    Is it like Trigger’s broom?

Wheel rims and spokes are new, as are the tyres (obviously) and seat and foot rests and a few other bits and bobs, but for the most part it’s still as it was … just overhauled.

It was a kit bike to start with anyway (anyone who knows anything about the CB550 will tell you that the tank isn’t genuine) so I wasn’t too precious about retaining the original features. In fact, with the benefit of hindsight I’d’ve happily junked the carburettors and replaced them with a modern set that worked properly as the existing ones have given me a bit of grief so far. Hopefully they’ll settle down a bit once it’s been fully run in.

Once Upon a Time in the West is, as far as I’m concerned, the best film I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a few. It’s absolutely flawless.

That opening scene. Twelve minutes of three men just waiting for a train. Incredible.

                And Morricone was never better.

                Cinematic perfection.

We certainly have different taste, while I appreciated the quality of the film it really wasnt my type of film.
For me The Godfather Part II was the greatest film ever, followed by The Godfather (I)
I liked Raging Bull as well and a host of other films.
I thought Godless was really good by the way.I wouldnt have enjoyed that style it in the 60’s.

Neither of the Godfather films can hold a candle to the epic that is Once Upon a Time in America as far as I’m concerned.

But as you say, we clearly have different tastes.

I’d be interested to hear if others agree with your assessment of me as I think it’s rather a crude (and inaccurate) generalisation.

I’m prone to hyperbole at times but to label all my contributions as such is disingenuous as far as I’m concerned.

I like the conversation about who can play in the Dembele role. Yes a lot can but both protecting the ball and also creating is really important as said in such a position. Its all according the level of confidence (Eriksen) and Focus (Dele and Lamela) and Drive (Moura and Winks) these layers had. To me its the most important position on the field. Its pivotal.
Its hard to find a player with everything. Its possible Grealish could have played that spot.He does have great control and desire and probably protects the ball too. But its a very responsible position.

    • Chauvelin 23/08/2018 at 11:29 am

I don’t think Dembele is leaving this summer, so it’s not such an issue as we thought a month ago. By next summer I think we’ll be clearer as to if we’ve already got someone to take over as principal CM or if we need fresh blood.

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 23/08/2018 at 11:43 am

In this last game Eriksen was playing deeper.I thought he did really well. While Dembele gives us more stability. A more creative player in the role would give us more flow. Its difficult to get a player who can give both but thats what we really need

        • Chauvelin 23/08/2018 at 11:59 am

And next summer will be the big one that some fans hoped this would be. New stadium fully open, Levy will have carried out stable refinancing of the total cost of the project, sponsorships in place. And silverware won, in my opinion…
At that point, we will be mature and confident and a couple of big marquee signings to make us the team to stop, if the others can.

Kane didn’t make UEFA’s shortlist of 10 for player of the year. Eden Hazard did.
It makes perfect sense, Eden’s record for the 17/18 season was 15 goals and 7 assists in the PL/CL combined.
Kane chipped in with a measly 37 goals and 4 assists.
Both captained their countries to World Cup semi finals, Kane winning the Golden Boot.

Kane is being snubbed by refusing to join a favoured club. If he had that season at RM or United or Bayern there’s no doubt he’d be feted by EUFA.

Nope, it’s barefaced insults, banter, and from some highly questionable authors.

However, there has been a very decent post just put up from what appears to be a very sad Arsenal fan warning of the perils of US ownership. It’s an analysis of Kroenke’s operating method and worth reading. I could cut and paste it here?

        • Chauvelin 23/08/2018 at 1:24 pm

Funny thing is, T** **Y liked it. He has no sense of the irony that in his own way Levy is at least trying to improve Spurs, albeit it has taken nearly two decades to get us here.

Here it is for your delectation, as Leonard Sachs used to say.

Rhys Jaggar August 23, 2018 at 1:02 pm

You might to enunciate the evidence for supposing a takeover will create a better ownership. The evidence down the road is extremely scant.

              1) Kroenke has put not one single penny of his own money into the club outside shares.
              2) Kroenke sought to pay himself £3m in consultancy fees without enunciating what consultancy was performed. Sharp practice in a listed company.
              3) Kroenke owns many unsuccessful US sports franchises, benefitting from cartel capitalism.
              4) Trust fund baby Josh wants a plaything and may finally get his Christmas present if Ivan Gazidis goes to AC Milan.
              5) 9 years after taking control, two years after surrendering Champions Aleague footbal, Kroenke buys out Usmanv, using a £550m bridging loan from Deutsche Bank.
              6) Kroenke is about to run Arsenal from Delaware, the US byword for lack of accountability, transparency etc.
              7) Nothing can stop Kroenke now saddling Arsenal FC with his purchase debt, just like Glazers at MUFC. A multibillionaire refusing to pay his mortgage….fans paying the stadium mortgage is fine, fans paying Kroenke’s is legalised robbery.
              8) Kroenke, being entirely ignorant about football, let Arsene Wenger run the club progressively into the ground. When Gazidis stood up, Wenger went straight to the owner to get a new contract summer 2017. Idiot dumbass Kroenke gave it to him. It did not end well….
              9) Kroenke hated AGMs, as knowledgeable fan shareholders lambasted him and his placemen. When he told one AGM ‘I could have had anyone, but I chose Arsenal’, most fans metaphorically threw up. His cognitive dissonance was unbelievable….
              10) Kroenke sanctioned a cash mountain of £220m building up during an era of higher player purchase price + salary inflation. A professor of any form of economics other than the junk variety he was/is not….£30m a year the cash pile increased for five years, then stayed steady for two more.
              11) During the past 9 years, no players have developed well, many have left to develop better elsewhere. Kroenke knows nothing about player development….

So dream on about your dream American owners, dream of them purchasing you with an LBO. And saddling you with debt that they will get you to pay off.

If you have a brain, do a JV with commercialisation partners: low overheads for partner, just a commercialisation team. Spurs get benefit of increased revenues, ownership remains outside US hands.

Of course, if US mafia families have ordained EPL fixed unless clubs sell to Americans, EPL is dead. Cartels rig sporting outcome to create narratives….

              Just saying……

Winks spoke exclusively to the club’s official website about the pride he feels at being named as Tottenham’s new number eight, whilst admitting that he personally requested the change:

“It’s something I’ve always dreamed of since I was a little boy, to have the number eight at Tottenham. It really is special. There have been so many great names and great players who have played in that shirt over the years and when you’re a young fan and aspiring Tottenham player, number eight, as a midfielder, is just the pinnacle so to get the number is an honour and I’ve got to work hard to do it justice. I asked the club if I could have it. I don’t really know how it all happened if I’m being honest – the club just sorted it for me and I was just told one day that I was going to have it, so it was all a bit of a whirlwind when I found out. I’m very grateful and I’m looking forward to knuckling down and working hard now.”

    Another one of our own.
