Toby aims an ickle diglet

Toby has had more of a say on his future at Spurs, proclaiming that he wanted to prove something at the World Cup….presumably that he had regained full fitness and some form to go with it.

Anyone who watched closely could see that, despite declaring himself fit back in February for the FA Cup game vs Newport County, he was very short of form when he actually played in that game.  He then tweaked a hamstring again and was unavailable until March 9th.

Unsurprisingly after a long lay-off, particularly a hamstring injury, and subsequent set-back, the coaching staff were keen to take a very measured approach to bringing Toby back into the team…a position that was further reinforced by the fact that Davinson and Jan had been doing very nicely together in his absence.

Clearly, Toby was then raring to go towards the end of the season but was held back for whatever reason (contract shenanigans, reportedly).

Prior to the World Cup, Toby comported himself impeccably on social media, with several supportive messages aimed at his Spurs teammates as they battled for a Champions League spot and a route through the FA Cup.

Now the shackles are off, it looks like he’s making himself heard in a slightly different way:

‘I really do not know anything yet. In my head I just go to Tottenham. We will see.’

‘I was very focused on this tournament,’ he continued. ‘I wanted to prove something again. Show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play – for whatever reason – was unjustified. ‘I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November.’

I’ve loved Toby at Spurs but it looks like his time with us has reached its natural end.  Time to get the deal done and reinvest, pronto.

From what I noticed of Toby in the WC he seemed off like he had at Tottenham. Not sure if its temporary or not. He just didnt seem to have that dominance and thats what he was all about. Not his talent but he dominance, mostly power

  • DAVID 16/07/2018 at 1:28 pm

Toby clearly not very happy about what happened at the back end of last season, shame if he and Poch can’t put this behind them.
Equally concerned re Danny Rose whose form seems to have regressed at an alarming rate.

Before his Injury lay off I was convinced that Toby was one of the best central defenders in the world. I am now of the view that he is the third best central defender at THFC. If he leaves for Man Utd, I will become extremely churlish towards him and rank him accordingly.
    I said ‘rank’ him.

This is it, Harts. Times change and so do players and their ‘fit’ for a team. I’m sure Toby will have some more good years elsewhere, but it doesn’t mean they’d be with us, if he stayed. The spell has been broken and it’s time to move on. I said “spell”.

            I’m rising above it, mate.

Actually, given how quickly Rose appears to have gone backwards I can see Walker-Peters getting a few run-outs on the left hand side next year.

  • Matt 16/07/2018 at 4:29 pm

I think he wants out, and you’d be more disappointed losing Sanchez or Vertonghen. Make a move quickly and re invest. Can’t say I’m as excited that Moussa May be staying; i get all his strengths but I think he slows our transitions. Snappy passing is what we need, not endless dribbling in our half. It’s why we don’t break quickly like City or Liverpool.

Toby wanted to use the opportunity of playing at the World Cup to demonstrate that, despite not playing much football in the lead up to it due to injuries and loss of form, he is still the quality player he was in November.

  • SeattleSpursGuy 16/07/2018 at 5:35 pm

If Toby has to be sold–and it’s looking more and more likely–I will have a hard swallowing a sale to ManU. Strengthening supposed rivals is the path Arsenal went down and look at them them.

    • Fat Bertha 16/07/2018 at 6:57 pm

The upside to selling to Utd is that Levy will extract the max from them. He’ll squeeze ’em ’til the pips squeek.

      • SeattleSpursGuy 16/07/2018 at 7:10 pm

Davies & Tripps are not fast enough to play as wing backs, we need some fresh blood. Trippier looked superb going forward, no question, but defence wise he looked same old same old…

    • Sexy Beast 16/07/2018 at 9:08 pm

I said at the start of the World Cup (i think on the dark side) that Trippier was a World Class wing back and that Kyle Walker was a World Class Fullback and got shot down in flames. My version of World Class would be if you could make 3/4 teams of 11 as opposed to a world eleven.
Paul Merson of all people said that his player of the whole tournament was Trippier!
      He was fabulous.

    • ronwol196061 16/07/2018 at 9:11 pm

Tripps showed he could play with the best
He also is a great crosser McG

      • McG ⚽⚽ 16/07/2018 at 9:21 pm

He did offensively Ron, but he didn’t defensively unfortunately.

        • Fat Bertha 16/07/2018 at 9:38 pm

I think undermining his strengths by highlighting his (percieved) weaknesses is a tad churlish.

It’s a bit like saying Christian Eriksen scores more and assists more than any other player in the Prem but, sadly, he doesn’t win enough headers in midfield.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 16/07/2018 at 9:44 pm

Call if churlish if you like, but I think you’ll find he was still at fault for a goal or two this tournament. He was tremendous going forward, absolutely. We have an abundance of creative players, first & foremost, a defender has to be brilliant at defending for me. Trippier isn’t a brilliant defender imo, & I daresay he’ll get skinned more than a couple of times this coming season. Sorry for dissing the golden boy, just my opinion!

            • Fat Bertha 16/07/2018 at 9:56 pm

Well, I do call it churlish and I’ll add to that the your definition of the role of a ‘defender’ is way too narrow for today’s professional game. In the route one, flat back four, flairless days of English football in the 80s and early 90s, p’raps your definition fits, but in a side that defends as a team and consists of versatile players who can play in a fluid system, I doubt that it does.

              • McG ⚽⚽ 16/07/2018 at 11:47 pm

We predominantly played a flat back four last season, & with the addition of Moura, return of Lamela & another AM likely to arrive, I don’t see that changing this season. Time will tell I guess…

                • McG ⚽⚽ 16/07/2018 at 11:48 pm

Maybe that should read ‘back four’ as opposed to ‘flat back four’, but you get my drift!

            • Sexy Beast 16/07/2018 at 9:58 pm

Do you blame for the Columbia goal?

            • Fat Bertha 16/07/2018 at 10:10 pm

He’s hardly the golden boy. He’s struggled to make his mark at Spurs and faced a lot of criticism for it but went to the world cup and took it by storm. I think he deserves the recognition he’s getting, and I hope he gets a pay rise and more respect hence forth.

I’m not comfortable with the ‘yeah, but’ approach to anything, really. Example:
Harry Kane got the golden boot.
Yeah, but he only scored once in open play (or whatever it was).
It was a great goal, though?
Yeah, but the ‘keeper should have saved it.
              Still, it’s a great achievement?
Yeah, but we it doesn’t mean anything as we didn’t win the cup.
Well, despite that, I thought England did well with such a young squad.
Yeah, but, you’ll never win anything with kids.

              • McG ⚽⚽ 17/07/2018 at 6:52 am

Meant golden boy of the world cup, which he quite rightly was!

          • ronwol196061 16/07/2018 at 11:48 pm

He doesnt….no not McG I mean Eriksen…he isnt Churlish he is more Danish

I doubt very much that Trippier’s inclusion in the Spurs’ side is primarily for his defensive abilities. And as for his lacking in pace, well, despite his lack of pace David Beckham became a worldwide star due to his own ability to perfectly strike a ball.

Yes, I know they play in different positions, the point is that they both excel in their strengths.

      • Fat Bertha 16/07/2018 at 9:34 pm

When I played football for my county schools side there where a number of us who played cm for our own schools.

One of the boys was signed up to Watford as a potential trainee. We were all good in our own way, but this boy had a way of striking the ball that as a fifteen year old I was really jealous of. It was crisp and seemed effortless, real quality.

He could strike the ball cleanly in any weather. When the pitch was claggy, our boots were clogged with mud and the ball either stuck to our boots or in the mud, this guy could strike the ball so sweetly, lifting it off the ground and into the air. I was jealous. He was an arrogant sod, as well.

Of course it may be that hs dad cleaned his boots properly and slathered on the dubbin (remember that) but still, I did admire the way he could kick the ball.

Trippier seems to me to have that same gorgeous way of addressing the ball. It’s like the ball has a sweet spot which he finds almost everytime. It’s more of a caress than anything else.

I think he has more than enough quality to become world class in his position and if we can play to his strengths this season I’m sure Kane and A N Other will score another 30/40 goals.

Yes, I know they play in different positions, the point is that they both excel in their strengths.

    Hey big boy.
I think you raise a salient point here.
Tripps was played as the right side of a five man midfield for England. For Spurs, he plays as an attacking full back in a back four.
In freeing him from a lot of his defending responsibilities, he blossomed during this World Cup and became a very effective winger, whilst still tracking back to defend.
Unless Spurs go to a 3-5-2 (or 3-5-1-1) he will revert to being a slow attacking full back (as opposed to wing-back).

    • McG ⚽⚽ 17/07/2018 at 6:58 am

A slow attacking full back that’s not great at defending. I really hope he improves that side of the game, nothing agsinst him at all.

I’ve always said it. Since pochfirst played 3 at the back with Sanchez vertongan and Toby at Everton that this is our best formation at the back allowing greater use of the wing backs

    • Syd 17/07/2018 at 12:15 am

      3 – 4 – 2 – 1
The way posh plays I believe this is our best formation

      • Sniper 17/07/2018 at 12:18 am

AVB brought in the 4-2-3-1 and Poch has kind of continued with that. Both have had success (statistically).
I would like to see us go to three at the back, especially at home.

          Totally agree

          • McG ⚽⚽ 17/07/2018 at 6:59 am

I would if we had pacey wing backs, as we don’t, I prefer 4 at the back & an additional AM.

            • Syd 17/07/2018 at 8:19 am

I think Trips could do the job, although not the paciest he can scoot. Ben D on the other hand takes way too long to wind up and get going and I agree with you there. I am counting on Rose not being there and Aurier scares the crap out of me anytime he defends near our box. Once he starts to defend in and around our box he has brain farts. Pavard would be handy for this.

              • Sniper 17/07/2018 at 10:44 am

                Aurier is a liability.
                That’s all.

  • UnkleTaff 17/07/2018 at 9:36 am

Pace, schmace. I’ll take a player who can cross a ball as well as Trippier can over one who can run fast every single time.

  • UnkleTaff 17/07/2018 at 9:48 am

If Toby has to be sold–and it’s looking more and more likely–I will have a hard swallowing a sale to ManU. Strengthening supposed rivals is the path Arsenal went down and look at them them.

So long as we’re the better for it I don’t care who we sell to.

Alderweireld is past his ‘best by’ date and if Man U are prepared to offer more than anyone else I have no problems seeing us sell to them … particularly if we can get someone like Martial, Shaw &/or Rashford to come the other way. Plus, if they sign Alderweireld it means they’re almost certainly not going to be signing Maguire (who most definitely would improve them).

    • Caspurs 17/07/2018 at 10:04 am

People assume Maguire is for sale, he only signed for Leicester last year, plus they aren’t exactly cash strapped, so I’d expect Leicester would reject any approach.

      • UnkleTaff 17/07/2018 at 10:12 am

…and if Utd (or anyone for that matter) went in with silly money (say £80m) and the player expressed an interest in talking to them, what then?

Bale and Modric weren’t for sale either, as I recall.

Having said that, I agree with you. I think Maguire has been very measured about the way he’s progressed his career and I think he’ll be happy to stay at Leicester for (at least) another year. But they won’t be winning the title again any time soon and there will come a time when he’ll want to move on to try and ‘win stuff’.

        • Caspurs 17/07/2018 at 10:27 am

Both Bale and Modric agitated for a move, I’m not sure Maguire would at this point. Leicester under their current owners don’t respond well to the big clubs trying to poach their players, as evidenced by their stance with Mahrez, yes they would sell if the other club didn’t mind paying way over the odds.

          • Sexy Beast 17/07/2018 at 10:32 am

Oh for goodness sake stop talking so much sense 😬

          • UnkleTaff 17/07/2018 at 10:32 am

Bale only agitated for a move once Madrid made their interest known. Up until that point he’d publicly committed himself to the club. As I said, I suspect Maguire is happy at Leicester for the time being but if the opportunity came along for him to improve himself it might tempt him. Who knows.

I’d be very surprised indeed, though, if he was still at Leicester in three year’s time.

          • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 17/07/2018 at 10:33 am

That’s my view Cas, unless a stupid offer comes in (which won’t come from us) can’t see Maguire going anywhere in the coming season.

            • Sniper 17/07/2018 at 10:42 am

I don’t really see what all the fuss over Maguire is all about. Yes, he is a big old lump in the air. Yes, he seems comfortable playing out from the back.
I guess it’s because he is home grown that makes him of real value?

              • UnkleTaff 17/07/2018 at 10:44 am

No, it’s because he is a very good (going on outstanding) footballer who is very good at bringing the ball out of defence. He’s a perfect fit for how we want to play.

Being homegrown is only an issue if your quotient is low … which ours unfortunately is.

                • Hartley 17/07/2018 at 11:22 am

I wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole. Too cumbersome, would look more at home ploughing a field with a heavy horse.

/No, it’s because he is a very good (going on outstanding) footballer who is very good at bringing the ball out of defence. He’s a perfect fit for how we want to play.

                    • UnkleTaff 17/07/2018 at 11:37 am

So you don’t think he’s very good at bringing the ball out of defence? Even though we’ve all seen him do it to great effect many times?

Centre backs who play as part of a back three need to be very comfortable on the ball. Which, in my opinion, Maguire is.

Hence my “he’d be a good fit for us” comment.

So, I met wiv me old man and the rest of me nuclear for a Sunday roast at Toby’s Carvery, which was nice.

I told him that, despite being one of The Boy’s longest standing and most loyal readers and contributors, he’d been suspended from that blog on the basis that someone (presumably me?) had created a Twitter account parodying The Boy.

In an unsolicited email The Boy informed me that he wasn’t happy about the Twitter parody and that me farver’s suspension would only be lifted if the Twitter was taken down.

Well, as I didn’t put it up I can’t take it down (as the actress said to the other actress who’d mislaid her portable phallus). However, if I had put it up I wouldn’t be taking it down over someone’s mean spirited threat to deprive a decent man of his simple enjoyment of a nominally Spurs’ related blog.

At first he looked concerned: “Why? I haven’t said anything bad about anything”. Then he looked disappointed and maybe a tad hurt; 10 years loyal and fairly affectionate following is a big commitment after all. Then he looked bemused as he tried to understand the logic of him being suspended because someone he didn’t know was making fun of The Boy on a platform he wasn’t familiar with. Then, when I had explained some stuff (that for now will not be disseminated publicly) and everything had sunk in, he did what all right minded men of a pensionable age would do, chuckled at the absurdity of The Boy’s position and then tucked into his roast beef.

Any old how, I thought that I would scout about to see if I could find the Twitter ting which had so offended The Boy and done for me farver, and with a little help discovered this:

    And this:

    What a hoot!
Although it should be noted that: We don’t negotiate with terrorists!

      And boy has it backfired.

  • Fat Bertha 17/07/2018 at 7:45 pm

What does tickle me is that T** **y uses his blog’s email address to send out nasty, threatening emails which I suspect may breach parts of the malicious communications act as well as data protection laws. Even now his blog occasionally and seemingly randomly throws up his readers email addresses for public view: Gus, Melcyid, SSG and Stevo to name just four. When you add to that the ‘outing’ of one of his harmless readers (something that he quickly deleted, but not before it was screen shotted (not by me)) you realise the man’s skating on thin ice.

As to me ‘tracking’ slyspurs personas through his IP address … how could I? Where would I have got his IP address from? I ‘tracked’ slyspur by recognising his writing style. Nothing more sinister than that.

    • stevo1987 17/07/2018 at 7:55 pm

When did he put my email address up?

      • Fat Bertha 17/07/2018 at 8:01 pm

I’m not suggesting that he deliberately put your email address up but it’s there in places. That’s how I found you. Considering his deep respect for his readers privacy I think the ‘glitch’ reveals a poor approach towards the handling of private data.

    • SeattleSpursGuy 17/07/2018 at 8:38 pm

Hmmm. Well, good thing I use a secondary email for my various logins.

      • Fat Bertha 17/07/2018 at 8:42 pm

I’m not suggesting for a second that it’s deliberate.

        • SeattleSpursGuy 17/07/2018 at 8:43 pm

I get you. I’m not too fussed.

    • foeorfreund 17/07/2018 at 8:25 pm

Welcome Toby, glad you have found us. I’m sure the TBH talk will subside, it is mostly in retaliation, some rather nasty things have been going on. It’ll pass, and this place will get back to what it has been most of the time.

    • Fat Bertha 17/07/2018 at 8:31 pm

It’ll all die down when the other bloke stops making threats, telling lies and calling people vile names.

In the mean time check this blog out. What you’ll find is a group of Spurs’ fans who generally have a love of and passion for the club and who enjoy debating the issues openly.

You’re very welcome to join us.

Agree, Toby has at least two more top level seasons in him.

      • Sexy Beast 17/07/2018 at 8:47 pm

It’s the business model i’m afraid, get top dollor for him now and spend it on a younger similar priced version and you get a top centre half for the next 5/6 years for nowt.

    What about you Gus?
Anyone else looking in, do you want to be a part of something that labels others paedos?

Harry Hotspur July 17, 2018 at 6:26 pm

I’ve not read any of it.

Been sent screen shots galore and it is literally the same cunts banging on and on about how dreadful this place is.

I can get all that here!

^^^ This is quality, he was even on here a few weeks back posting comments. Harry Helmet, when one person calls you a c*nt, you can argue the toss, when 40 odd tell you you’re a c*nt, time to accept you’re a c*nt. As for the Paedo’s comment, I was more offended by what he’s said about Ron, w*anker.

I think it’s easier to blank, for those who can cope without, it’s better not to even bother clicking his site. I’d stopped for a while but then got curious having read comments above!

    • Sexy Beast 17/07/2018 at 9:42 pm

Ok where were we..ah yes, I’m not gonna lie. I’m not a fan of levys styliez. A poch preseason is a must for any new player. I’m not going to compare our business with the way other clubs do theirs as I believe, like most around here, that we have the most settled team out of the top four but our rivals have identified their weaknesses and are addressing them. We all know what we need and I’m sure the Ronaldo domino effect will gain momentum soon. I am calm..for now.

  • Toby Spursano 17/07/2018 at 9:43 pm

  • stevo1987 17/07/2018 at 10:09 pm

Even if we don’t sign anyone I’ll be optimistic for the new season. The younger players have gained some experience (World Cup). Some were in only their first season with us. Hopefully Winks is fixed and back up to speed. I think we will do fine.

    • HD 17/07/2018 at 10:14 pm

I have always like the looks of Winks’ game, especially when healthy. He is an asset, as I think Foyth will become.

    • Freund or Foe 17/07/2018 at 10:14 pm

Wit ya Stevo. The longer this group are together, the better they will become. Though I’d love just a few pwopa additions, I won’t be jumping off the Sky Lounge if we don’t.

      • Caspurs 17/07/2018 at 10:19 pm

I agree with the core staying together is good, but I do worry the nearly team tag could start to play on the minds of the players. A couple of decent signings could serve to help reinvigorate and reassert belief within the team.

        • SeattleSpursGuy 17/07/2018 at 10:22 pm

Yup, gotta refresh the squad a bit.

          • HD 17/07/2018 at 10:44 pm

Yep, keep the core together, unload a little deadwood and add a couple of upgrades.

  • stevo1987 17/07/2018 at 11:07 pm

Again, it’s the old conundrum. Unless we sign a superstar they won’t walk into the team. We don’t sign superstars so it’s often underwhelming. Any ideas then?

        • Flat Oeuf 17/07/2018 at 11:49 pm

As for the stadium 15th September is going to be hoooge after the summer of trolling from the Scousers. How some of them can have wildly celebrated England’s exit from the World Cup is beyond me. They’re catching the Chavs as my least favourite fans…and that takes some doing. Have I told you all how much I hate Chelski before?

They bought Messi for 432 million
When he got to the Emirates 2 gooners in an alleyway turned him upside down.
      It said MADE IN CHINA!!

Be nice to have a palate cleansing bloeug offering. Anyone?

  • Syd 18/07/2018 at 12:37 am

I see HH is giving it to all of us on this site with insults in his latest blog.
Very sad really. Very very sad

    • Syd 18/07/2018 at 12:39 am

Oh sorry. I realise now after reading some of the comments above that you’ve already touched upon this. I’m sorry about his comments to you Ron

      • Syd 18/07/2018 at 12:44 am

Having said that I wish him and all the regular bloggers there all the best

        • Caspurs 18/07/2018 at 12:46 am

Not sure I’d go that far Syd, although there are some that I wish well.

          • Chauvelin 18/07/2018 at 12:53 am

Perhaps they can crawl out from the wreckage?

      • ronwol196061 18/07/2018 at 12:54 am

Nothing to be sorry about Syd.

  • Chauvelin 18/07/2018 at 12:39 am

I think there is a lot to be said for continuity. Perhaps fans are becoming too anxious about the need for new arrivals other than to replace those who move on? A few breathing exercises may help when we see the comings and goings elsewhere.

    • Syd 18/07/2018 at 12:45 am

Another season behind them. They should be stronger.
There are not too many players out there who are for sale that would strengthen our team

      • Chauvelin 18/07/2018 at 12:50 am

Some squad trimming is required if possible, this seems incontestable. Perhaps that nice Mr Commolli can be persuaded to have a job lot? We’ve got Winks back in training, and Lucas always was an early summer signing (well I thought so). And Lamela needs to make up for lost time.

        • ronwol196061 18/07/2018 at 12:59 am

Hope Lamela adds some weight and will help his game.
I want to see what Moura can do with this season. He has talent.

          • Chauvelin 18/07/2018 at 1:05 am

I’m sure he will. I’ve been disappointed that some people on social media immediately wrote him off, as if it is easy to walk into a team and gell quickly. Some can, but these are few in number.

            • ronwol196061 18/07/2018 at 1:16 am

Ive watched Moura and find he has a very good eye for the game and talent too.
To be successful you also need the will to win.For that Im not sure as ge hasnt broken through anywhere yet. Thats an element.
He needs to show he wants it…but needs the chance to andcthe belief that he can

              • Chauvelin 18/07/2018 at 1:20 am

I’m not quite sure where Lucas is going to play yet. But he can carry the ball at pace which will be a different option next season. Fingers crossed!

                • ronwol196061 18/07/2018 at 1:30 am

I think he has a shot at it. He has some class about his play. He has the talent and pace but the desire to make things happen will make him a winner but he just has to do it. No free rides

                • UnkleTaff 18/07/2018 at 9:39 am

The message coming out loud and clear from the club was that Moura was bought with this upcoming season in mind; if anything, we got him earlier than planned.

Some people have chosen to ignore this in order that they can pursue their own agenda. Quite how anyone can write him off based on what we’ve seen of him so far (which is actually pretty encouraging if you ask me) is beyond me.

Back to the original post; I find it a bit disappointing that Toby is having sly digs that he wasn’t being played when, he claims, he was fully fit.
In the main, he has behaved himself whilst seemingly trying to manufacture a move.
He’s a great defender and all that. We are better with him in the side.
But I am of the opinion we should sell, for big bikkies while we can, then go buy someone decent to slot into midfield. We have cover across the back four, so Toby won’t be a fatal loss! We can’t be carrying anyone who will poison the changing room. Verts was starting to do it when we were using him at left back. Rose is in the departure lounge with his behaviour over the last year as well…

    • ronwol196061 18/07/2018 at 2:11 am

I dont think Toby is a Sh*t disturbed but its better he moves on and we move on.

      • Sniper 18/07/2018 at 2:19 am

As exciting the prospect of new signings might be to the average twelve year old; I can’t say I am fussed. Rarely do new signings make that much difference unless they are World Class (I still remember when Klinsmann was announced).
We are a steady top four and competing for cups and titles. We might win something with what we already have….

        • ronwol196061 18/07/2018 at 2:43 am

Another CM will give us a serious boost

          • Sniper 18/07/2018 at 5:33 am

Agreed Ron, if he is a proper playmaker, solid on the ball, can beat a man and run a game.

            • McG ⚽⚽ 18/07/2018 at 8:19 am

We also need another striker, LB, & poss a CB should Toby depart.

    • UnkleTaff 18/07/2018 at 9:45 am

A poster on the other place has suggested that he flashed his knickers at Madrid just before pulling his hamstring against them.

Yup. They’re generally a good bunch who don’t deserve to see their great club treated so shabbily.
