Title Decider

B8BDFE72-C4BD-4E28-9267-307D232E5C6F

As we approach one of *the most important encounters in the history of mankind*, I thought it incumbent on this bloeugger to pose the important question that any sane, logical-thinking, rational human would ask:

Who is going to win this 2nd/3rd place play off decider?

Liverpool are flying high but only one defeat from a full-on Bindipper implosion the likes of which we haven’t seen since, well, the last one. Klopp is the anointed one who shall not be criticised, because he’s such fun with his quirky teutonic accent and his rock ‘n’ rolliness and his sexy gang-pushing, or whatever it translates as. Additionally, Liverpool should have won every title since 89/90 but were cruelly robbed by everyone playing, sorry “being”, against them.

Citeh are the heirs apparent: the unbeatables, populated by the untouchables, led by the unmentionable. They totally deserve the title this year, because they won it last year. There’s no way they’re going to go backwards, because Lord Pep Almighty is a genius to whom we should all generously gregariously genuflect as that is what they merit. Except they’re  wobbling. They’ve got Second Album Syndrome.

Bearing in mind the above, whatever the result we win…although a draw will do nicely, fanks very mucho.

Liverpool are going to win the league. They’re the best team in the Prem!

    • UnkleTaff 03/01/2019 at 9:59 pm

Sadly I’m forced to conker with that. They don’t have to play City again and they’ll streamroller most of the teams they play against. If they can remain injury free I can’t see them slipping up too often between now and the end of the season. That could easily be the only game they lose this year.

According to reports, Barca have all but tied up deals for three of our alleged midfield transfer targets, De Jong, Rabbiot, NDombele, all of which play a similar position. They already have Busquets, Vidal, Denis Suarez and Rakitic, as well as promising youngsters Alena and Arthur.
And they may want Eriksen too.
I’m looking forward to the new 1-8-1 formation.

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 04/01/2019 at 11:10 am

Yep, media having a field day with that one, as well as the usual suspects suggesting it’s a money issue. He makes it quite clear that it’s a squad issue, we don’t have the squad capacity to buy unless we sell first, but we shouldn’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.

          • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 11:48 am

Doesn’t make sense to keep Vorm now. Foyth needs his spot and we promote Alfie Whiteman. Or buy a homegrown if he’s too young.

        • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 11:42 am

How are the major news outlets dealing with Pochettino’s “I want to win the CL or PL with Spurs” comment yesterday? Or are they generally choosing to ignore it as it doesn’t fit the narrative?

          • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 11:47 am

The major guys aren’t touching it much. Express go with a headline “Mauricio Pochettino reveals what it would take for Tottenham to sack him as Man Utd circle”, then briefly added at the very bottom of the article the ambition quote, saying “Pochettino then dropped a hint that he could yet stay at Spurs.” Usual stuff, as expected.

            • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 11:51 am

We’re a bit stuck unless Dembele chooses to move now. We could remove Nkoudou from the squad like Janssen, to free up a place. Then you wonder if we’ll ever sell either if they vanish from the team.

              • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 11:55 am

Yep. You can’t see many offers coming in for George Kev, or a crocked Wanyama, or even an old goalkeeper who has hardly played in 4 odd years. And there’s no incentive for Mousa or Llorente to leave when they can get a much better deal as free agents in the summer. A bit bloody stuck.

                • Cavey 04/01/2019 at 11:57 am

Has Levy never heard of free transfers?

                  • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 11:59 am

Yup, we should cut our losses (players), and get on with finding the players we need.

                    • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 12:02 pm

If there’s one criticism I have of Levy it’s this. He hates the idea of losing money (or spending too much money) on a player. He can’t seem to see that holding out for a deal of some kind can often have a negative long-term impact.

It’s this approach that might well have cost us Jack Grealish over the summer.

                    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:03 pm

Really? You guys think we should free transfer? Crikey.

                    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:07 pm

I maybe accept that for Vorm, and think that Levy would probably accept it too, but that isn’t the end of it. Vorm is out of contract in the summer, so why would he leave now unless a decent team offering a better salary comes in? Is that going to happen?

                    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:09 pm

Same with George Kev. He’s supposedly on 20k per week, who is going to offer him that?

                    • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 12:11 pm

Not necessarily on a free, just don’t always try and get top money.
Sometimes it can be beneficial in the long term to foster good relations with other clubs, by allowing a deal to go through at a fee lower than might be attainable elsewhere.

                    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:11 pm

Wanyama 70k per week, long term injured.
It’s all well and good suggesting to just get rid, but that’s not in our control.

                    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:15 pm

Crikey Cas. Examples of this please? Or are we just going on the rhetoric?

                    • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 12:17 pm

If the club wanted to move Wagamama on, then you let him know he’ll not be registered in the squad, then look for a loan deal in order to minimise the financial burden on the club. No/yes/dunno?

                    • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 12:23 pm

I’m certainly not advocating free transfers, just suggesting we should lower our asking prices to hasten some departures.

And Steve Bruce has said that Grealish was ours for the taking but Levy sensed he could buy him for even less than the (thoroughly reasonable) price he was on offer for, so he played the waiting game only for that ploy to come unstuck when the new owners came in.

                    • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 12:26 pm

Sorry Taff but, I don’t think £40m was a reasonable price, not when you think Maddison went to Leicester for £25m.

                    • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 12:28 pm

£40m was not the original asking price as I recall. It only became £40m once the new owners took over.

                    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:31 pm

Wanyama’s crocked. Jesus updated us this morning…

“There haven’t been any setbacks. He had the problem and he always just needed time to get in the right direction but he is not inside, not hiding, so we will see probably in two weeks if he is ready to train or start to train.”

If we won’t know for two weeks if he is ready to train, there’s little chance of him being sold or loaned this month.

                    • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 12:36 pm

My points are hypothetical, and mainly refer to players who’s contracts expire in the summer, Wanyama was just an example of how the club could reduce the financial cost of one player, and free up a squad place. Nuffink more…

              • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 11:57 am

It’s like that Kane interview a few weeks ago, where he maintained that it was Poch’s decision not to bring anyone in last summer. Glossed over.

  • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 11:56 am

    Never heard of him.

    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:00 pm

I’ve no doubt that this kind of thing goes on, but as it is illegal, why the hell would PSG/Tobes agents let this info get anywhere near the press? What would they hope to achieve?

      • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 12:08 pm

Possibly there is a feeling that if he leaves, going outside the PL is far preferable. Two fingers to United and all that. Maybe Levy has allowed this?

  • Shelfy 04/01/2019 at 12:12 pm

    foeorfreund
I maybe accept that for Vorm, and think that Levy would probably accept it too, but that isn’t the end of it. Vorm is out of contract in the summer, so why would he leave now unless a decent team offering a better salary comes in? Is that going to happen?

Vorm is an interesting one because a year ago he was asked about being backup and he replied that he knew his role at Spurs and was happy with it. More recently he has said he now wants to play regularly as he is coming to the end of his career and still has something to offer. That was before he was ‘demoted’ to third choice.
We got him on a free and I can see hm leaving on a free. That squad place would allow Foyth into the CL squad.

    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:20 pm

Yep, no doubt he wants to play more. But is there really a club out there who would match his Tottenham wage and offer him a starting position? Not in England, for sure.

      • Shelfy 04/01/2019 at 12:27 pm

I am sure he is well aware of that and must have decided it is time to sacrifice some pay in order to play. I cant see Spurs standing in his way.
The key for Spurs wont be money but will be squad related (I.e. overseas spots)

        • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 12:40 pm

Sure, what I’m saying is, what club would give him a guaranteed starting berth? I’d suggest not many, and if he did manage to find one, it would be on a fraction of his current wage. He’d then have a decision, take his Tottenham wage for the next six months to play for a shite team on nothing wages, or wait until the summer to get a starting berth at a shite team on nothing wages.
I think it’s a moot point anyway, I don’t see that he’ll be able to find a club.

          • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 12:47 pm

Or wait for an injury crisis at another club who need emergency cover.

            • McG ⚽⚽ 04/01/2019 at 12:58 pm

Can’t tell me there isn’t a lower tier dutch side who wouldn’t be interested? He’ll likely get peanuts, but I don’t think 6 months Spurs pay will make or break his decision, he’s a made man by now, 8 years in the UK…

              • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:03 pm

You say that, but the 6 months of his remaining contract are worth a lot of money, over half a million quid. He’d be very lucky to get 2k per week at a lower tier Dutch side, so max 50k over the next six months. Would you give that up to play lower tier Dutch football?

                • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 1:05 pm

Plus, players generally get a bigger signing on fees and wages when the sign for a club as a free agent.

  • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 12:13 pm

Anyhow, we’ve got good academy players who need to earn their Spurs spurs. Hopefully George Marsh and Kaziah Sterling will join Skipp in tonight’s squad.

    • Elyid 04/01/2019 at 12:20 pm

Completely agree with this, be good to finally see what they have to offer on the big stage. Bring them through while we still have a strong team who all seem to bond together well.

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 04/01/2019 at 12:25 pm

I’d like to see Troy Parrot.

    • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 12:26 pm

Pochettino has (apparently) said that no one will be playing tonight who hasn’t already featured for us this season. So that effectively means Skipp, Walker-Peters and Foyth. A couple of the other kids might make it on to the bench but I can’t see any youngsters other than the three I’ve named actually starting.

      • Shelfy 04/01/2019 at 12:29 pm

It has been the same for all our recent cup games. If first team squad players are fit and available he has played them. Last year we had several fringe players who needed game time and they made a right pigs ear of the first couple of rounds.

        • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 12:37 pm

Quite right too. So far this year he seems to have managed the squad rotation very well.

And I’m not sure Tranmere away is the ideal place to blood the kids anyway. Walker-Peters, for example, was targeted by Newport (I think) last year and had to come off at half time as a result.

          • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 12:42 pm

The amount of changes Poch made last year in the FA cup seemed counter productive to me, as it resulted in a fixture pile up due to the need for replays.

            • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 12:49 pm

True. Maybe Pochettino had learnt from those two replays, unlike the cows.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 04/01/2019 at 12:47 pm

I still think a lot of the squad rotation has been forced upon him, but he’s done ok. We’ve scraped through in the cl, & are improved in the prem, although the footie weren’t great for just over a third of the season.

            • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 12:50 pm

But we’re still clinging on in the title race nonetheless. Unlike ManUre, hence the (misplaced) interest.

              • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 12:58 pm

I listened to talk shite last night where they were dismissing our title chances, and although I would agree we are third favourites, most people forget we’ve lost the majority of our first team to injuries this year. The only players to not have spent time on the sidelines are Son, Kane, Sissoko and Davies (I think). Citeh have a far deeper squad than ours, and Pooh haven’t lost any of their key players so far this season (except Gomes). When that is taken into account, I think we have done remarkably well.

                • Sexy Beast 04/01/2019 at 1:04 pm

Spot on! We are doing fab considering 9 of our top players had two to three weeks off, no pre season and went straight into playing games. We have had more than our fair share of injuries so to be this close to Pool and Citeh is remarkable really.

                  • McG ⚽⚽ 04/01/2019 at 1:08 pm

Yeah, this is very true, such a shame we’ve had so many really.

                • Levymealone 04/01/2019 at 2:04 pm

Pool lost The Ox for the season as well.

              • McG ⚽⚽ 04/01/2019 at 1:01 pm

Yep, we need everthing to come together in terms of players back from injuries, no silly Wolves results, stadium move to add momentum, & not lose at Anfield or Etihad. Will the stars align?!

    Afternoon pop pickers.

  • Levymealone 04/01/2019 at 1:05 pm

So we have exercised our option to extend Toby’s contract til 2020. Which is the same time as Verts. Yet Toby has a £25M buy out allegedly, but Jan does not. How certain are we that the clause exists in Toby’s contract? I am unaware of official confirmation about such a clause, only media comments and I didn’t think Levy did buyout clauses?

    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:08 pm

Good point, nothing official re the clause that I’ve heard, but I think we’d know by now if it wasn’t the case, given all the press attention.

      • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 1:11 pm

Even Ally Gold seems to think there’s a clause, and he comes across as a very level headed Spurs fan/reporter, so maybe there is?

        • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:12 pm

          I’ve no doubt there is.

          • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 1:14 pm

Yup, that’s how I see it.

          • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 1:18 pm

If there is a release clause (and I still think that’s a big *if*), I have no doubt it’ll be more heavily weighted in the club’s favour than the player’s or else it wouldn’t be there in the first place.

        • Levymealone 04/01/2019 at 1:14 pm

Yes, I am not saying there isn’t one, just that it’s not been made official (why would it I suppose?). If there is, I bet Verts is fuming at Toby and Levy in equal measures!!!

          • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 1:16 pm

If Verts is fuming, I’d think it would be with his agent. I doubt he is though.

          • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:17 pm

Verts was very happy that his contract was extended.

          • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 1:23 pm

According to the BBC, Pochettino said this a week ago:

“It is the same situation as Jan [Vertonghen].”

So I guess this means that either Alderweireld doesn’t have a release clause or Vertonghen has one well.

            https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46693595

And whilst we’re on the subject, can someone please explain to me why a player who is happy with his current contract/employers would insist on a release clause in the first place?

            • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:25 pm

He said that about taking up the option to extend, not about any clauses.

              • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 1:28 pm

That’s not how it reads on the BBC’s website.

                • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 1:30 pm

If Verts had a clause, I think we’d have heard about it by now.

                • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:31 pm

I’m sure it isn’t. Football London is always good for writing full press conferences, not just picking parts that suit a story.

                • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:32 pm

Poch has never commented on Tobes release clause, I’m not even sure that he’s ever been asked.

                  • Sexy Beast 04/01/2019 at 1:41 pm

I’m surprised no hack as every asked about the so called release clause tbh.

                • Shelfy 04/01/2019 at 4:45 pm

I watched the actual interview and Poch was talking about activating the one year option being the same for Toby as it was for Jan.
He said nothing about a release clause for either of them in that interview.
In terms of Toby’s release clause I haven’t seen Spurs ever comment on it, however the media have reported a lot of supposed detail like it only comes into effect for the final tw weeks of next summer’s transfer window.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of our players refer to Pochettino as “the gaffer” before, so I reckon we’re probably in the clear.

    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 1:47 pm

There’s a few clues in the article.
“It wasn’t the club’s official Christmas party but a few drinks after a game and many of the players and manager were there.”
The insider added: “There’s been turmoil in the dressing room most of the season and this hasn’t helped.”
“Results haven’t been fantastic so it’s the worst possible timing. The drug testers had visited the day before so he knew he could get away with it.”

      • UnkleTaff 04/01/2019 at 1:48 pm

So that’s us definitely in the clear, then.

Regarding the title – I will enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts, but I said a few weeks ago it will be won with around 96 points. So we need 16 wins out of our remaining 17 games – a huge ask for any team. Pool would need to loose 2 and draw 2, giving them 95 points, with City slipping up as well, and I am concerned that they have had their ‘blip’. Pool only have 3 of the big teams to play and we have 5 (three of them away from home).

    • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 1:53 pm

Pochettino told reporters this morning that he believed Spurs had become a “target”.

“It’s true we’re the team to beat,” said Pochettino. “Remember when we fought with Leicester, everyone wanted to kill us. That’s because they showed respect to us because in the project that we are in – because for many people we’re not very successful because we still haven’t won a trophy – the people respect us in the way we’re doing it. It’s not being arrogant, it’s being realistic.

” ‘Oh why are Tottenham there?’ A club like Chelsea can spend big money on a transfer and then send him [Christian Pulisic] on loan – do you think Tottenham can do this? No.

“But in the last few years Tottenham is fighting with this type of club. That is why no-one likes Tottenham much, that is why everyone wants to challenge us.

“It’s a massive game every time. Wolves beat us and they behaved like they won the Premier League. Then on Wednesday they lost to Crystal Palace.

“It’s because Tottenham have created something special in this country and now we are a target. I promise, it’s not about being arrogant. That shows the respect the football people have (for us).

“Maybe we’re not the good guys, eh? Yes, it’s a little bit weird, the perception. It’s weird. I don’t know why, it’s difficult to find the right answer. When we started, it was nice. ‘Oh Tottenham, very nice guys’.

    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 2:25 pm

I don’t mind if we were not nice guys. Nice guys don’t win things.
By saying this Pochettino is working on our team’s psyche, getting them prepared to expect a battle every single game.
If our boys really believe that the opposition is ‘out to get them’ then our players will be more likely to start fast and dominate from the beginning and play hard until the game is won.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 04/01/2019 at 2:46 pm

Probably nonsense, but I’d be quite happy. Love his energy, but don’t think he’s any better than KWP, who has much more potential. We don’t need 3 first team right backs, speshley when Dier can also play there in an emergency.

    • Chauvelin 04/01/2019 at 3:37 pm

And Max Aarons is such a great prospect i’d buy him now, loan him back to Norwich and sell Aurier now or in the summer.

Ah, the Moose. Fantastic when he was fit. On my trip over there a couple years ago I had rare pleasure of witnessing a Dembele goal (the opener against Bournemouth). He was MotM that day and was imperious against Watford the week before. Absolutely dictated in midfield in those two games.

              • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 5:00 pm

You saw a Dembele goal?!?!!! Cherish it, SSG, you are one of few.

    From the Liverpool Echo:

‘Already a manager who is known for making wholesome changes after each match, it’s likely that Mauricio Pochettinho could field a different side to what many are expecting to see.’

Wholesome changes … Maybe some brown rice with chia seeds and tofu with spinach?

    Levymealone

Regarding the title – I will enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts, but I said a few weeks ago it will be won with around 96 points. So we need 16 wins out of our remaining 17 games – a huge ask for any team. Pool would need to loose 2 and draw 2, giving them 95 points, with City slipping up as well, and I am concerned that they have had their ‘blip’. Pool only have 3 of the big teams to play and we have 5 (three of them away from home).

I am reminded of the final 15 games of 16-17 when we won 13 of them. It’s a small step from that to winning 16 of 17. Bring it on!

  • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 4:50 pm

Some incredible claims being made by plonkers elsewhere regarding our finances.
Our wage bill has supposedly gone down in the last year to under 90mil, and we are 11th in the prem in player wages.
    Must. Resist.

    • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 04/01/2019 at 4:52 pm

      I reckon they’re inaccurate.

    • Shelfy 04/01/2019 at 4:54 pm

I think it is outrageous that Spurs pay players to train or play for them.

      • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 4:58 pm

        It’s disgusting.

        • Shelfy 04/01/2019 at 4:59 pm

Yeah totally. How may streets around Tottenham could get cleaned for 90 mil.

      • Caspurs 04/01/2019 at 5:00 pm

I think charging fans to watch the team play is outrageous, Shirley it’s us wots doing them a favour.
PS, and not even a hint of an offer to cover our travel expenses…

  • cavey 04/01/2019 at 5:13 pm

Any forecasts on the score. Will he play the under 23 team?

    • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 5:21 pm

I think we’ll only see a few young faces, Skipp and maybe KWP. From the academy, only Skipp, Georgiou and Bowden trained with the first team squad today. I expect a reasonably strong side.

      • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 5:25 pm

        * and Alfie Whiteman, though he’s been mostly with the first team squad this season.

    • SeattleSpursGuy 04/01/2019 at 5:33 pm

      Gazzaniga
      Walker-Peters, Foyth, Sanchez, Davies
      Skipp, Sissoko, Dele, Son
      Moura, Llorente

      • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 5:35 pm

        Looks about right.

        • foeorfreund 04/01/2019 at 5:37 pm

Might see Tobes in place of Foyth/Sanchez.

      • Shelfy 04/01/2019 at 6:18 pm

GKN to get a start. Dele or Sissoko rested is my bet. Otherwise agree with that as a probable line up

Foyth, Sanchez and Davies will play as three at the back, with Aurier as a right wing back and Walker-Peters on the left.

The rest of ’em pretty are pretty much self-explanatory.

That is my take on the team selection.
