The Sting

A Brief Interlude

Brentford are taking over the bloeug today due to the incontrovertible fact that they are our my/your/second team. *

Brentford FC Logo

Nine times Brentford have tried and failed to gain promotion via the play-offs either to tier one, two or three of the great English football pyramid and nine times they have failed. Today against Swansea, the 10th time, must be the one where they finally crack it as it starts in a one!

1946-47 was the last time the Bees graced the top tier in the old first division, the first season after the Second World War. They’ve bobbed about interminably between the old fourth division and the new Championship ever since, and of late they’ve made a couple of real tries at breaking back into the top level falling to Middlesbrough in 2014/15 and Fulham in 2019/20. They’ve been preparing diligently for their inevitable seat at the top table with the building of the new 20,000 capacity Brentford Community Stadium replacing the grand old Griffin Park which was famous for being the last stadium to have a pub at each corner.

The 17,250 seat Brentford Commuunity Stadium

Between two of those pubs their is a little two-up two down at 50 Braemar Road; a modest abode where I lived very briefly in the mid-70s with my mum my parents separation.

The 12,300 seat Griffin Park Stadium. Our lil ol’ house was roughy where the arrow indicates!

Brentford became my second team after the mighty Lilywhites as a result and it was great seeing both clubs getting promoted in the 1977/78 season. It would be greater still to have the Bees hosting Spurs on their patch in the same division for the first time in my life.

Newsnow is filled with the story that Conte is coming to WHL. It feels like where’s there’s smoke there’s fire. If he can be strong enough to get Levy to do what needs to be done then I’m all for it. Can’t argue with the man’s record

If we get Conte, he doesn’t strike me as the type to suffer fools. Apparently he has history of turning underperforming teams around. Maybe it’ll be enough to keep Harry too 🤞

Carlo was manager there when they signed Bale and Isco. Frankly amazed he’s going back. He was voted Best World Club Coach in January 2015 and sacked by Perez four months later…

According to The Telegraph, Daniel Levy will promise Antonio Conte that Harry Kane will not be sold – unless he thinks the fee is so good that the money can be reinvested and make Spurs better.

Additionally, the report states that Conte is hugely impressed by Tottenham’s stadium and training ground, believing them to be ‘among the best in the world’ having visited in the past.

When Conte arrived at Chelsea they’d just finished in 10th place with a mere 50 points. In his first season they pipped us to the title with 93 points. He did this with a net spend of around 21.5mil. Just sayin’.

I understand he didn’t spend big at Chelsea and I gather his at Juve he revitalised players there as well to make them a good fit for his tactical requirements.

But on the other hand, Mourinho had well and truly poisoned the dressing room and Chelsea finished tenth because they stopped playing for him. They were still the core group who’d been title winners the season earlier.

I’d just say we’ve got some excellent players too, so let’s see.

Alasdair Gold @AlasdairGold:

Now looking likely that Antonio Conte will become the next Tottenham boss. Spurs pushed hard to try to bring Mauricio Pochettino back but PSG have fought hard to keep him. Conte is one of the top managers in the world and it’s going to be fascinating to see how he will

Fit into a very different environment at Spurs than he’s previously had elsewhere. The arrival of his former Juventus DoF Fabio Paratici also looking likely but both men will need funds to work with and it’s going to be interesting to see if they get that and where from.

Conte suddenly becoming a free agent made him a very attractive prospect for Levy, but if he puts pen to paper as expected it’ll be intriguing to see how the two men gel, whether he fits that Levy DNA statement and whether he can settle at Spurs for longer than elsewhere.

No denying it would be a big statement appointment but without adequate funding Conte is going to find far more frustration ahead than he did at Inter and Chelsea. As a journalist he will be a fascinating character to cover and I hope he’s given the chance to succeed.

Levy is taking a huge gamble too. Conte wouldnt be the safest bet but maybe a good bet for success.
Its hard to understand the rush to get someone..one minute Poch and next minute Conte…really them maybe or maybe not getting a DOF reeks of desperation

Does he fit the mould? We need a guy who can develop young players and not rely on an owner pulling out the cheque book and spending heavily on players. Can’t see Levy ceding that much control to him or a DoF

Kane looks very trim, maybe he’s started the ManC fitness regime already ?

The Austrians are not taking any prisoners, do they know it’s a friendly?

Trippier gets in some great positions going forward but has to check back to cross with his right foot, bit of a waste really.

Grealish and Kane look a good combination, sign him up Danno.

No again. I read Spurs really wanted Jadon Sancho, but City wanted to keep him, but he wouldn’t stay. He said he wanted to join Pochettino, Spurs made an offer but City refused to sell to another Premier League rival so flogged him off to Dortmund. Another reason why Citeh can go whistle if they think they can get Kane on the cheap.

Playing as a midfielder, Conte began his career at local club Lecce and later became one of the most decorated and influential players in the history of Juventus. He captained the team and won the UEFA Champions League, as well as five Serie A titles, among other honours.[6] He also played for the Italy national team and was a participant at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000, where, on both occasions, Italy finished runners-up.
His managerial career started in 2006, leading Bari to a Serie B title, and Siena to promotion from the same division two years later. He took over at Juventus in 2011 and won three consecutive Serie A titles before taking charge of the Italian national team in 2014 until UEFA Euro 2016. He then became Chelsea manager and led them to the Premier League title in his first season in charge,[7] later winning the FA Cup in his second season with the team. He was dismissed as Chelsea manager in 2018 and joined Inter Milan a year later,[8] winning the Serie A title in his second and final season.
Conte is credited as to bringing back and popularizing a 3–5–2 formation formation after it had seen very limited use since its heyday at the 1990 World Cup.[9]

Depends of the role of DOF, but you want someone in charge of the completed direction and strategies from youth right through, with sign off for the transfers . This sounds fine but unless he can bring the manager with him or has others he knows he is in tune with, what happens if these managers aren’t attainable ? We then have a new manager appointed who may think they can work together but realise when certain players can’t be found an others are introduced for instance , this will cause a problem. As you say they need to be on the same page but I think this comes down to manager (with Daniels brief) wno is thinking mainly about his current team needs. He’s has his philosophy and things c hange. Too many cooks is my concern with this. I’d feel more happier if we know we can get the 2 who have worked before or the manager first and then the DOF.

You worried me there. Bruno Schlage was an SS Guard at Auschwitz. Eventually got tracked down and imprisoned.

Conte just posted on his Instagram: “It’s a nice day”

That confirms it for me. He won’t be joining Spurs

Conte will never be a long term manager in my view. Only ever managed 3 years at a club/country once, every other stint has been 1 or 2 years. Might prove me wrong of course, and maybe that’s just how modern football is, but it doesn’t work for me.

Fabrizio Romano @FabrizioRomano: “Tottenham have made a proposal to former Juventus director Fabio Paratici to become new Spurs director of football.”

If Poch won’t go the whole way and publicly resign from PSG, it looks like Levy is viewing him as a no go. Therefore Conte is in the frame today, makes perfect sense. Levy waited over the bank holiday weekend and Poch still hesitated.

That was my guess, not from anything reported. Poch was unwilling to put his head above the parapet so Levy gave up and said, OK stay at PSG.

If it’s Poch he wouldn’t come with a DoF over him look at the fuss he’s making about Leonardo. So probably Conte and a DoF, or Poch no DoF.

Romano doing his usual stuff repeating the stuff reported hours ago by Angelo Mangiante of Sky Sports Italia.

They said Conte is in head to head talks with Levy this afternoon.

Some people give no responsibility for buying players to Poch only to Levy.
The truth is…well we don’t know the truth or yhe dynamic.
We can guess but we don’t know the truth.
I think we need an in between guy…a top notch DOF to put his name of stuff

I’ve no axe to grind with Levy or Poch but don’t understand why Poch would be desperate to leave PSG for us, especially if working for Levy is so grim.

Just had an estate agent round, the guy was Kanes double.
I asked him if he was staying this Summer, he laughed and said he’s always being mistaken for him, even when he was at an airport waiting to catch a flight while Kane was playing in the World Cup in another part of the World.

Probably not, possibly extending depending on the numbers. Been here 40 years now and kids grew up here so would be quite a wrench

Syd, Poch had pretty decent results with PSG. But the same problem afflicted him in France as it did with Spurs. He can’t get over the line.

On 3rd April PSG lost at home to Lille 0-1. They had sixteen shots to three but couldn’t win it. That was the title crunch.

Reminds me of the defeat at home to Leicester by exactly the same scoreline and just the same that was the result which killed our hopes just like it killed PSG.

Cavey, Levy is not the total problem but he is certainly part of the problem and we need him more than ever to be part of the solution or this can be a terrifying era for Spurs.

I’d say Levy was at fault for taking his eye of the ball during the build. But the biggest problem has been covid as its cut our legs off.

Levy bought the credentials of Mourinho and it failed.
He didn’t take his eye of the ball ,he doesn’t know the ball
That’s the problem even if the owner is an accountant he needs to have some feeling apart from credentials and be understanding in the game itself.
I mean if an owner of a company was an expert in product but didn’t know money he would be in trouble. He would have to learn about money as a prime thing at least.Ive never heard Levy actually say anything about football. He only asks questions it seems its not his field except it is his field
