SYD’s DEBUT

DON’T PANIC! I’m here to help if you need me Poch!

There is nothing wrong with Poch’s tactics. As a matter of fact he should win everything with the formation of 3 at the back, 2 attacking wing backs, a DM and a AM and 3 up front is fantastic. This is his preferred formation I believe.

With a strong wall in the back providing unyielding defence and feeding to either of 3 directions, one of the MF’s, one of the wing backs and then in turn either a diagonal ball, a ball down the line or a ball through the middle for the deeper lying runner behind the oppositions back 3 or 4.

So what’s wrong with Poch’s tactics – NOTHING. NOTHING AT ALL.

Well how come our displays in the last two weeks (some might say longer which I can understand) have been ‘tres ordinaire’?

Here comes the rub –

To carry these tactics out you need the right player for the right position. For example – you might say our best back 3 is Toby, Sanchez and Vert’s in which case I would agree, so let’s agree these 3 should be capable to perform the first part of our tactic’s.

This is most important if you chose to play out of the back as opposed to hoofing it which is what Poch is demanding at this point.

They need to fulfill the next requirement of getting the ball to our wing backs or link with either the AM or DM.

Let’s look at the qualities of a good wing back – I would suggest the following certainly come in handy:

Positioning

Calmness on the ball

Speed

Ability to control the ball and pass

Ability to cross accurately

Ability to get back

Well let’s look at our so called WB’s and see who has all of these – In my opinion only Trippier comes close. Davies is terrible and who knows if the old Rose will return. The only trouble with Trips is he is not very good at defending when required. Aurier is a hit and miss and fringe players don’t rate at the moment.

Now let’s look at the AM’s and DM’s. What qualities do they need:

Positioning

Calmness on the ball

Ability to pass

Ability to read the game

In our squad, the only real AM is Ericksen (who can either player AM or more up front but I believe this is where Poch wants him – just behind the front 3). Who else fits the bill? (fringe players are not there yet).

In the DM’s department, we have a plethora but I would suggest only the ageing Mousa plays this role with any aplomb and even he is erratic. Dier is out of position, terrible at passing and also at defending set pieces and seems to be regressing. Winks is not coming on like we hoped. Wanyama could provide hope but injury is slowing down his progress and Sissoko has a good engine but little else and that’s even if you place him in this category.

Again, none of the fringe players fit the bill – yet.

Playing 3 up front should work very well with this formation behind them ‘IF’ the players behind are decent at their individual roles.

I think in Sonny, Lucas, Lamela, Dele and Kane we have quality in abundance.

In theory – a terrific formation.

It may take time but we need to build 2 or 3 players each window to get where Poch’s tactics and formation show quality. We need fast, ball controlling, calm wing backs. We need another AM to back up Ericksen and we certainly need much better quality in the MF.

In summary (and thanks for reading if you got this far), we are reasonably well off at the back and at the front, however almost everything else in the middle of the sandwich needs more seasoning.

We simply do not have the quality to carry out Poch’s instructions.

Here is my one hope – ‘Juan Foyth’ to play in front of the back 3 (something to consider anyway).

Congratulations SYD, that is it in a nutshell.

    • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:45 pm

Thanks Cavey, we could go on forever but just touching what I think are the glaring issues.

  • 89Spurs 👁 19/09/2018 at 11:01 am

Well said Syd, good article although some may disagree, I’m with you all the way. 👍

    • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:45 pm

      Hey 89..thanks

  • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 11:07 am

Thanks Syd, some talking points to kick off a rousing debate with plenty to air!

I’d point out Dele started his career further back as a CM and I think he could really be effective there instead of Winks (on present form), it would free up room for Lucas/Lamela to play.

    • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:46 pm

Yes Glos, the reason was to get the discussion s started ahead of the next window. Good point and I agree re Dele

  • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 11:10 am

I don’t know if others would agree with me, but Aurier had a good game for 85 minutes, much better than I was expecting. I haven’t reviewed his contribution in the final depressing 9 minutes to see if he could have stopped that cross to Icardi or not.

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 11:13 am

Certainly someone should have marked Icardi as he was in space to strike his shot, with all our players crowding the box.

    • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:47 pm

I thought Aurier had a good game as well mate

  • Bruxie 19/09/2018 at 11:31 am

If any three of Winks, Wanyama, Dier or Dembele take to the field together then we are buggered.
I told you I’d bore you with that opinion…but it seems a lot agree.
    Nice one, Syd!

    • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:48 pm

      Thx Bruxman 🙂

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:25 pm

    Well done Syd!!!
No chance to read it all just watching the game now
Our lack of control, and passing without a bigger purpose, lack of players in defence with the inability to pass with confidence,Our forwards running into trouble..has been the story for the first 20 minutes.

    • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:26 pm

      Plus Davies the diabolical

  • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 19/09/2018 at 12:30 pm

    Great read Syd, excellent debut.

    • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:48 pm

      Thumbs up Andy…all for discussion

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:33 pm

Our best player has been Dembele but he seriously lacks a bigger vision.
But looking at Eriksen..what did he create in the first 30 minutes?
    Nothing

    • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:33 pm

      Ditto Lamela

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:00 pm

Lamela hardly saw the ball in the first 30 minutes.

        • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:04 pm

The two times he had it he ran into the opposition

          • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:13 pm

Yes, but that’s what I wanted him to try. Direct attacking and not just passing it away. The passing game failed us against Liverpool.

  • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 19/09/2018 at 12:37 pm

Nothing really new in here but mention made that there is a lack of confidence within the team. Question is why?

  • DAVID 19/09/2018 at 12:38 pm

We were in control until Poch made substitutions which weakened us.
We were better than Inter, Watford and Juve but somehow contrived to lose to all 3.
His press conferences are bordering on embarrassing. Get a grip, focus on what’s happening on the pitch and play to our strengths.

    • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:39 pm

I’m 35 minutes in and I don’t think we are playing better than Inter. We have been more of a pantomime

      • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:40 pm

One excellent pass by Eriksen is all our team has mustered

      • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 19/09/2018 at 12:42 pm

There were two average playing sides out there last night. We were just slightly more/less average than them.

        • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:46 pm

That’s true but in 41 minutes and we seem to have woken up a bit but they don’t look anywhere as hesitant in defence as we do
Overall they have been better than us

        • HD 🇺🇸 19/09/2018 at 12:46 pm

The law of averages caught up with us.

  • Carrigbawn 19/09/2018 at 12:56 pm

Last night’s Champions League loss and the defeats to Watford & Liverpool could be a blessing in disguise. We can forget about the Champions League and finishing in the Top 4 of the EPL and can now concentrate on the BIGGIE. Winning the League Cup! 🙂 🙂 Some silverware would definitely please HH.

    • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 12:59 pm

The last 3 games we seem to be playing the same nonsense and lack of ideas in all those games

Great second effort goal there by Eriksen

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:03 pm

We took control second half, and then Pochettino made his substitutions. As you’ll see…

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:02 pm

Sorry, that’s just as nonsensical as the doom and gloom stuff. Five matches in and you suggest we forget top four? I assume you’re being provocative.

    • Northern Spur 19/09/2018 at 1:47 pm

      I sometimes wonder about you.

      • Northern Spur 19/09/2018 at 1:49 pm

        Not you, Chauv!

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:03 pm

We scored a goal now our players running about like superstars.
Where were they for 50 minutes?

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:05 pm

      Behind the sofa.

Our start was exactly helped by Dier making not one, but two awful square passes across our defence in the opening three minutes. Real confidence boosters.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:09 pm

I wanna see us revert back to Dembele & Wanyama quick smart, Dier needs resting, two weeks minimum imo.

        • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:11 pm

He needs the hair dryer treatment. He’s made too many slip ups to be regarded as acceptable.

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:10 pm

We don’t have any players that the other players can lean in and get confidence from. Our psychology is week.We wait for something good to hapoen before we get stronger. There is no Mackay or Blanchflower to inspire

    • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:19 pm

I think Wanyama for Dier will inject some steel Ron. Dier looks absolutely shot.

      • HD 🇺🇸 19/09/2018 at 1:21 pm

If Winks isn’t match fit, as many have said, do you think Wanyama is?

        • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:23 pm

          Let’s find out?
I think Vic is a lot harder to swat aside than little Winks.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:25 pm

Exactly, & we need him match fit sooner rather than later. He’s far superior to Winks, his experience, how many trains has he watched go by compared to Winks???!

      • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:24 pm

Wanyama has been ok at times. He is also a bit reckless.
Its 6 if one and half a dozen of the other
        Maybe Dier needs a rest

        • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:27 pm

The season Wanyama was fully fit we finished 2nd, not saying that’s entirely down to him, but him & Dembele are a force.

    • Northern Spur 19/09/2018 at 1:52 pm

I mentioned a lack of leadership last night,Ron, but I got the Stevo ‘tumbleweed’ reaction.

      • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:57 pm

        Maybe nobody disagreed NS… 🙂

      • Fatty B 19/09/2018 at 2:09 pm

        Hahaha. I agreed.

  • foeorfreund 19/09/2018 at 1:10 pm

Didn’t watch the game. Tried to tune in at 8, only to realise that it was already over.
    Lucky me.
No panic here, we’re a very good team on a bad run. We’ll get over it and push on. Still up for the quad, me thinks.

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:15 pm

I’m worried that Pochettino seems confused with game management and baffling in his press conferences. He’s making wrong calls consistently and I think he’s second guessing himself and is losing confidence. We’ll see.

  • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:10 pm

One player who could and should do much better is Dier. He has developed a taste for very risky, sloppy, wayward passes around our defensive third. It demonstrates a weak mentality and a casual attitude. He’s made dangerous passes in the opening minutes of games, and if anyone in our team is behaving like a bovine animal with the attention span of a fruit fly it’s him.

  • foeorfreund 19/09/2018 at 1:15 pm

    Nice work Syd!

    • HD 🇺🇸 19/09/2018 at 1:19 pm

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:18 pm

Moura came in and has done a few nice things
I would like to see him try to play deeper as he has some ball control and desire and confidence

    • HD 🇺🇸 19/09/2018 at 1:19 pm

He makes a booboo at the end. Oops! Sorry. 🙁

      • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:21 pm

It’s ok I’m just saying how its going

  • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:20 pm

Vorm. Three games, six goals conceded in those.

Now, he’s clearly not superstitious but I’d be a lot happier if our goalkeeper didn’t wear the number 13 jersey!!

  • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:23 pm

Yeah, sorry Syd, nice work. I’m not sure I agree with you entirely re our midfield options, we have quality in every position, but Poch is making a pigs ear of his team selections & substitutions last few games. I’m sure we’ll be back to our best soon enough!

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:24 pm

      This.

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:26 pm

I’d like to see some of the youth players getting a game in the Caribou cup.

        • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:29 pm

Winks for a start, get him fit in matches other than prem & CL.

          • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:34 pm

Oakley-Booth, Skipp possibly. Maghoma? Shame Foyth isn’t fit yet.

    • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:54 pm

I hope so McG, but I sincerely think the wing backs are the golden eggs as far as Poch’s system is concerned and ours are not good enough. If we start to gel and get better I do not believe it will be because of the wing backs as they are what they are and will not get much better. They are simply not fast enough

      • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 3:20 pm

Rose is fast enough, Trippier isn’t. Said it many a time but apparently he can cross the ball really well & take a decent free kick, which is all we need!!!

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:25 pm

    I’d drop Davies

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:29 pm

For Rose? The choice of who is currently worse is a toss up.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:31 pm

No, Davies wins on last few performances, not sure what’s up with him.

      • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:32 pm

        I’d rather have Rose

        • syd 19/09/2018 at 1:55 pm

I think we are discussing who is less worse at the moment instead of the other way around

    • McG ⚽⚽ 19/09/2018 at 1:29 pm

      On his head!!

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:31 pm

Could play Unk’s favourite, although I’d prefer Walker-Peters to play right back. Aurier can play left back and at the moment he’s at least showing intensity.

      • Syd 19/09/2018 at 2:51 pm

        Tom Carroll is back???

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:31 pm

Its 82 minutes and we have been doing better this half.Still nothing special. But as least as good as Inter or better.

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:34 pm

For their first goal we gave their two players 10 yards space to work with

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:35 pm

Yep. Let’s let Icardi drop off unmarked and have plenty of time and space to strike.

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 1:36 pm

Their flipping target man and top goal scorer. Can’t make it up…

  • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:38 pm

HD not sure how bad Moura was
He is having a go beating players doing better than any other forward

    Shambles in the area…Aaarrgghhh…

    • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:42 pm

And again for the last goal.
Its seems our players on high balls don’t have to jump

  • HD 🇺🇸 19/09/2018 at 1:47 pm

Moura left his position, at the near post. Had he remained he could have headed away the cross. That is what I saw. Not condemning him as I know that in the heat of battle you make decisions. I just thought he could have stayed on the post.

    • ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 1:50 pm

  • Flat Oeuf 19/09/2018 at 2:21 pm

A note on Lamela. I was really happy to see him starting. Although I know he’s not the finished article or whatever, he brings a lot of bite and the occasional flash of brilliance for an assist or goal. Last night, however, he got into some really promising positions and then failed to get his shot right or to find the pass that would have led to a goal. I know he’s just coming back and so these things might finally come, but the other possibility is that he just hasn’t got that bit of quality that it’ll take for him to become a starter for us, ever. Good to bring on for tired legs but both Moura and Son get in ahead of him on last night’s performance.

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 2:50 pm

I think the Italian connection was why Erik got to start. Maybe Poch thought the sight and sound of the San Siro would get him firing on all cylinders?

      • Flat Oeuf 19/09/2018 at 2:59 pm

With Dele out and Son still recuperating, I think it was pretty much his *only* option, not that I think he wouldn’t have started him anyway. He’d shown flashes of great form in 15-20 mins, but when it came to 90 mins, although he worked his bollocks off as always, he also gave the ball away in some dangerous areas, ran into cul-de-sacs and failed to deliver int he danger areas. Harsh but fair, I think.

    • Ronwol1960-61 19/09/2018 at 3:10 pm

After we bought Lamela he went on tour with Roma to Toronto.I saw the game on TV and saw how fantastic Pjanic was compared to Lamela (different positions though) but Pjanic was the bloke to buy not Lamela. Yes he has bite yes his pressing is good and yes at times has great little touches but he has little weight (just like many of our players) and little authority.
We lack that.A take charge player that would take it on. This is our biggest problem. Dembele has it but his vision is very limited. Eriksen has brilliant moments but not a take charge type and nobody else really can do it on our team.
As a team we sometimes kick it up and when the system is working look fluid but often it doesn’t.
I said at one time Grealish was one footed because there were other players I thought would be better for the 6 position but he does take charge of the ball. Others all seem to go to higher paying teams. We just don’t have enough of that and our team psychology suffers. They cant look to too many to make it happen. Maybe when Kane is on it covers up the lack of intensity and quality around. Im sure we will get better than we are. They lack inate confidence I think.

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 3:46 pm

Yes, but who is a take charge player in the Premier League? We know them when we see them (Patrick Viera, Roy Keane, Yaya Touré) but they are very few and far between. United spent £95 million on Paul Pogba trying to get one, which was 75 million pounds too much imho. Ozil at Arsenal? Nope. It’s difficult.

        • Ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 4:33 pm

Not many around but we should find ONE

I though Sanchez was fantastic at Arsenal
Not playing well under Mourinho but he is used to playing the Bielsa way for Chile

  • GDawg 19/09/2018 at 2:34 pm

I see comedy legend Denis Norden has been filed away in a folder marked ‘dead’.

Hackney boy done good. Though I thought he was already dead.

      • Fatty B 19/09/2018 at 5:04 pm

Never met him, but met his son a few times. Always found his son never less than a complete wakner. He couldn’t ‘ve been any further from Hackney made good if he tried. Actually, meeting the son took the shine off my view of the father.

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 4:43 pm

Very talented comedy writer with his mate Frank Muir. A most unlikely partnership on the face of it, but very successful.

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 4:48 pm

Norden and Muir’s funniest writing. ‘Balham, gateway to the South’.

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 5:26 pm

To our overseas friends, you need to know that Balham was a once salubrious Victorian London suburb but was a seedy run down craphole by the 1950s.

  • SeattleSpursGuy 19/09/2018 at 5:16 pm

Fully agree on the wingbacks. A couple years back we saw what Poch’s system can be when staffed correctly. We had Walker and Rose causing havoc. Now, Walker moved on and Rose has been a shadow since his injury woes. We’re left with Tripps, who is a good player but ill suited to be a wingback, and Davies, who is slow and I honestly cannot remember the last time he played well.

Which raises the question of why we try to play a certain way, but haven’t the players to do it well.

    • Flat Oeuf 19/09/2018 at 6:04 pm

I remember when there was only one formation: 4-4-2. That were it. Full Backs were Full Backs. Centre Backs were Centre Backs. Midfielders were Midfielders. Strikers were Strikers.

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 6:10 pm

        Jumpers for goalposts eh?

      • Ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 6:19 pm

I remember when centre backs were centre halves
Formations were always 2-1-2-2-1-1-1- and creativity was crucial

The last part is still crucial no matter what Poch thinks

        • Fatty B 19/09/2018 at 6:24 pm

My favourite formation is the old 3-2-5 / 5-2-3.

          • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 19/09/2018 at 6:27 pm

Was only thinking about that yesterday. A proper set up. 👍

          • Ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 6:53 pm

This was with the benefit of sepia.
I think the actual formation of 1960 was 2 backs with a centre half who showed on the program as being in mid but was aligned on the field with the two backs

Two half backs left and right. One creative and one more defensive (switched at times forward and back)

A creative inside forward that worked with the creative half back

            Two real wingers

            One 9

and a 10 that worked on the shoulder of the 9 and vice versa

            • Fatty B 19/09/2018 at 6:56 pm

              Rush ‘keeper?

              • Ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 9:20 pm

                4-2-4 was pilotless

        • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 6:27 pm

Quite frankly Barney Ronay is right in in magnifying his points here.
I think as well that Poch’s style of managing could fall more into a Mourinho melt if they don’t play for him rather the the buddy positive feeling that Klopp imparts to his players.
As far as Poch talking about playing from the back not so confidently and that pervades the rest of the team I agree 100% but I don’t think that Sanchez is not part of the problem. He isnt as cool as we think. That’s why he plays simple balls. He doesn’t seem dominant at all when there is a player anywhere near him.
As to Moura he has been a shining light. He can’t go it alone though but if the others used 25% of the desire that he showed we would be much better off.
On Eriksen its the same as usual. He is really talented and can make things happen. He doesn’t take over the field and isn’t a born leader but he isn’t easily replaceable and it would be difficult to emulate his numbers.

Dembele I don’t think he was mentioned though He was our best or at least one of the few this week that were. He doesn’t have enough vision in that he cannot see past the 15 yard pass so he is never world class but he can control the ball. (he like all the others including the sweethearts are not perfect)

      • Ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 9:19 pm

Re Sanchez he does do great sliding tackles but sometimes when his isn’t being super careful can make mistakes in judgement

      • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 10:15 pm

        • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/09/2018 at 10:23 pm

How have the Southampton, players that left, done sinc Poch left.I guess a mixed bag. His system has been good for us no doubt, better than we have had. I questiin though Poch’s limitations. He has an idea and he is testing out other ideas, some work, some dont. How creatively clever is he really we dont really now. Whe it works he looks like a genius and when it doesnt he looks mediocre so we have to say he is doing well above average.
Can he keep us on the high road?
Im not sure. I dont have Taffs enthusiasm or belief. Its wait and see for me like it is about Winks. Ill give Winks this season and Poch another couple of seasons

          • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 10:38 pm

Pochettino is undoubtedly a good coach. He brought some order to the squad and has stabilized us as a regular top four contender which is an achievement in itself even if it isn’t silverware. In the real world of today and not 30 years ago I’d rather have us at the top end finishing above Arsenal regularly than a middle order side fighting for the Europa places and making a big effort to win the cups from time to time.
His task, if he fancies it and doesn’t move on after his 5 years here, is to transition the club as a big stadium team and see if he can utilise the extra revenues to move forward.

            • Ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 11:18 pm

  • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 11:00 pm

It would be so easy to slip backwards. We need to give Pochettino our support and realise he’s a quality manager even if he hasn’t yet won a trophy. It’s hard, he hasn’t been showered with goodies from the magic money tree and he is doing bloody well with the resources he has.

I sometimes think of the Charlton fan who called a phone in 2005 to say that Alan Curbishley had done well to get the club to solid midtable finishes in the premier league. But that he couldn’t take Charlton any further forwards and needed to go. There were quite a few idiotic (and ungrateful) Charlton fans I heard saying this kind of nonsense after five seasons in the PL for this frankly minor London club. And when Pardew did resign in 2006 (finishing a decent 13th) what happened? Relegation immediately followed the next season and a downwards collapse into League One just two years later.

Lessons here about not taking things for granted, and be careful what you wish for.

    • Ronwol196061 19/09/2018 at 11:22 pm

I don’t disagree, I know too well the reality. But I’ve seen the Glory.and I’ve seen the Garden and 2 Holy Grails in one season and asking me to accept something less is reasonable but also unacceptable.
