Squeeze Another Squad Out, Poch

Image result for big crowd

At last, back to important matters.

Let’s buy Bale, Kovacic, Modric, Martial, De Ligt, Maguire, Grealish, Rabiot, Barrios, Ndombele, Zaha!

Let’s sell Sissoko, N’Koudou, Janssen, Llorente!

Sounds great, doesn’t it?

Apart from the well publicised and obvious issues concerning transfer fees, wages, and the ability to convince top players to come to us rather than other big clubs, combined with finding clubs silly enough to buy our rejects for reasonable money, there are other issues that Poch, Dan and the Net Spend Band need to consider carefully.

Squad size.

The Premier League rules concerning squad size and make-up are as follows:

Premier League clubs are allowed a maximum of 25 players in their first-team squad.

8 of these players must be “homegrown”.

The maximum squad size of 25 excludes under 21 players, of which there is no limit.

This means that Premier League clubs can have a maximum of 17 non-homegrown, over 21 players.

Premier League teams can register less than 8 homegrown players, but only on the basis that this would reduce the amount of non-homegrown, over 21 players by the same amount. So if we register 7 homegrown players, we can only register 16 non-homegrown, over 21 players.

Are you with me so far? Good.

Looking at our current squad, we have 18 non-homegrown, over 21 players:

Lloris, Vorm, Gazzaniga, Aurier, Tobes, Verts, Sanchez (just turned 22), Dembele, Son, Eriksen, Dier*, Moura, Lamela, Wanyama, Sissoko, N’Koudou, Janssen, Llorente.

*Though he was born in England and plays for England, Dier is not considered homegrown as he was brought through a foreign academy. Mental, innit.

We only just scrape through on our 8 homegrown players, the list of 9 below includes 2 players that were out on loan last season:

Trippier, KWP, Davies*, Rose, CCV, Dele, Winks, Kane, Onomah.

*Although according to PL Davies is a homegrown player, according to UEFA he is not due to him being brought through the Swansea academy. This means that we have 19 non-homegrown, over 21 players for the CL, and the CL has the same ruling re the 17/8 split.

So what? We only need to sell/loan one non-homegrown player and we’re within the limits. Most Spurs fans would agree to sell Sissoko, N’Koudou, Janssen and Llorente in a heartbeat, and it looks like Tobes and Dembele are off anyway, so it’s not a problem.

Or is it?

Just because we are happy to cash out onΒ Sissoko, N’Koudou, Janssen and Llorente, doesn’t mean that clubs are falling over each other trying to buy them. And even if there was some interest, do you expect any of the above players to be top of other clubs wishlists? I’d suggest, if at all, they are more likely to be sold or loaned towards the end of the transfer window when clubs get desperate. And would the likes of Sissoko and Llorente agree to a move at all, or stay on their bumper contracts at a CL club and try to fight for their places? This leaves us in a position where we could buy non-homegrown, over 21 players now and risk having players on the books that won’t be able to take part this season, or leaves us open to low-ball bids from clubs knowing we need to get rid.

And as far as Tobes and Dembele are concerned, are there many suggestions for replacements that are homegrown, or under 21 players?

De Ligt and Maguire could fit the bill for Tobes replacements, but I would be sceptical as to whether we could prize either player from their current club, or outbid other interested parties.

None of the speculated Dembele replacements fit the bill either, apart from Grealish, though I don’t see him as a direct replacement for Dembele at all, more a back up to Eriksen.

The conclusion I take from all of this is that, ideally, we need to sell to buy. But not for the reasons that some quarters of the Spurs-lovin blog world like to make out. It appears quite clear to me that it is as much about balancing the squad size and make-up as balancing the books.

I expect good signings this summer, but with consideration, I would suggest that a reasonable percentage of those signings would need to be homegrown or under 21, and any that are not could only be accommodated by selling existing non-homegrown, over 21 players.

I also think that this means it is highly unlikely that we will sell Rose.

Just get on with it, Levy!!

Or maybe this transfer lark isn’t quite as easy as some like to make out?

11.56am edit!!!

Some adjustments need to me made to the above info (Unk put me straight!)

We can have up to 17 non-homegrown, over 21 players in our squad no matter what, it does not depend on how many homegrown players we have.

U21 players do not count towards our homegrown allocation, meaning we currently only have 6 homegrown players.

This changes little in the main point made, we can’t go bringing in non-homegrown players without selling/loaning those we already have.

The links with Grealish, following from our interest in Barkley seems to indicate Poch recognises a weakness in creativity. That’s good because while we’re strong in many departments we do lack that consistent spark.

    • SpurAndy πŸ’ πŸ₯§ 15/07/2018 at 10:09 am

Personally not 100% sure about Grealish, Matt. He’s got the technical skills but not sure about his application. Also, saw him in the Championship playoff against Fulham and he was lucky to stay on the field imo. Red mist seemed to have descended at one point so he might be a player that could get needled easily. May have been a one off though.

      • Matt 15/07/2018 at 10:33 am

Yep I’m with you on Grealish, it’s not a definite no or yes for me. I’d welcome him as a squad player who may make it but not as our marquee signing.

For me, Pavard to replace Toby; Gomes + Grealish would be a good set of β€œins”.

    • foeorfreund 15/07/2018 at 10:28 am

Yerp, agree Matt. More creativity is required.

      • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 10:36 am

Agreed, but what type of creativity though, that’s something I often think about. Personally I like the ÜnlaΓΌt Kid…

  • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 10:31 am

If we need homegrown players then I understand the move for Grealish, but where does he play? #10? Not for me. #CM? I can’t see it myself. Do our first 11 need a sprinkling of ‘star’ dust to finally get over the line and win something? Yes I believe we do, and I suspect the players do as well. One or two top players would be the spark we need, the rest if any, should at the very least be top young prospects.

    • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 10:46 am

Grealish doesnt look top notch to me. He seems capable though. I thought he looked one footed but maybe wrong.
Another player who might make it. So nothing wrong with that. A new face. Some interest. Lets see.

We need a new CM filling that hole will a real talent would be impressive. Grealish would be another of the options like the 4 or 5 we have at AM

    • Sexy Beast 15/07/2018 at 10:56 am

Maybe we should let Pooch decide that no?

      • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 11:05 am

It’s just my opinion from what I have seen of Grealish, nothing more.

        • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 11:10 am

          No criticism here

  • foeorfreund 15/07/2018 at 10:47 am

No signings, no sales. Oh that skinflint Daniel Levy. Why, oh why are we always last in the transfer market, when all the good players have gone!

Understand your concerns Captain, and obvs would have preferred signings as early as possible. I am still patient though, when you say all the best players will be gone, I look at the done deals so far by our competitors, and don’t see much that’s fills me with jealousy.
Arsenal have bought quite a few players, none that I’d heard of before.
Chelsea have bought Jorginho, who is following his manager out of Napoli.
Liverpool Fabinho, but I’m more than happy with our options in defensive midfield, and Shaquiri. I don’t need to say anything about him.
Man City Mahrez, yes, great signing, but there’s no way we would have stood a chance getting him, no matter how early we tried. And I’m not sure he’s an upgrade on Son, but probably is an upgrade on Lamela.
Utd have signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, who didn’t play in the WC. Can’t say I’ve seen much of him. And a young full back from Portugal, who from the sounds of it has potential.

So I can’t really agree that we have lost out so far. I’ve no doubt we have a list we are working at.

    • Fat Bertha 15/07/2018 at 10:51 am

Pity. Shaquiri was the only one I was interested in hearing about.

      • foeorfreund 15/07/2018 at 10:52 am

        His hips don’t lie.

  • Bruxie 15/07/2018 at 10:52 am

    Morning Oeufers,

I agree creativity is a key requirement for us at present and I’m hoping that Gomes of Barca might be a candidate. Dembele never really created too much even though he was brilliant retaining possession. Eriksen and another creative type would do it for me.
As much as I’d like Modric to come back I cannot see it happening.
    Just get me Bale.

    • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 10:54 am

From what I’ve seen of Gomes, I’d rather we targeted someone else.

      • Sexy Beast 15/07/2018 at 11:29 am

Cas with you in charge of recruitment our shortlist would be who?
My shortlist is exactly the same as Pooch’s by the way, Pooch knows what he is doing what we need is Levy to stay out of the Tranfer targeting of players and the so called commitee, end of!

        • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 11:43 am

So Poch didn’t have a say in signing NjiΓ©. N’Koudou, Sissoko, Lorente or Janssen? I guess they must have been Levy signings because they didn’t work out.
This is a blog, a place where people air their thoughts and opinions, everyone sees the game in their own way, and have their own views, personally I welcome that.

          • SpurAndy πŸ’ πŸ₯§ 15/07/2018 at 11:53 am

Agree Cas, all we have are opinions and conjecture. This is the place to air it in a friendly but questioning way.

          • Sexy Beast 15/07/2018 at 12:02 pm

I don’t know the answer to that anymore then you do Cas, but what i think i do know is that Pooch is likely waiting for Bale to give a nod or a shake of his head, if a shake then i suspect we go in for Zaha strongly.
With regards to CM his 1st choice is likely Kovacic with possibly Rabiot 2nd choice and Gomes 3rd, but that is a guess. Gomes was signed by Barca for close to 38M Euros 2 years ago when that was considered a lot of money, there is a player in there but Barca and the way they set up doesn’t suit his strengths as a player.
Fact is we are 100% not going to get all of our top targets, so we need to lower our sights.
Pooch thinks and see potential in Jack Grealish, that is good enough for me. Pooch is the best thing to happen to our club since Kieth Burkinshaw became manager i will let him do his job and go along and support the team come what may.
            When we having a beer?

    • foeorfreund 15/07/2018 at 10:54 am

This is the problem. If there is even a sniff of Bale, or Kovacic, or even Rabiot, would you wait and see how that pans out, or commit elsewhere to get business done early?

      • Bruxie 15/07/2018 at 10:59 am

Exhaust all possibilities. At the same time. Phoning agents with “are you interested?” questions and prioritising those who are.

        • foeorfreund 15/07/2018 at 11:01 am

So if Bale’s agent says β€œmaybe”. If Rabiot says β€œit could happen”. What then?
I’ve no doubt Levy is doing all the work you are asking.

        • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 11:04 am

I’m sure the club are as active behind the scenes as the other clubs. What we don’t know, is what the clubs budget/plans are.

          • foeorfreund 15/07/2018 at 11:05 am

Nor will we, until it happens.

    • Bruxie 15/07/2018 at 10:54 am

Bale is an option. He’s due a meeting with his new boss this week and if RM want Hazard there’ll be no room for him?

      • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 10:58 am

After winning the CL single handedly (howdya like them apples Ronaldo), I think RM would ask for more than we have, and then there’s his wages..

        • SpurAndy πŸ’ πŸ₯§ 15/07/2018 at 11:07 am

I’d have him back in a β™₯ beat. If Ronaldo had stayed he might have left, but now just don’t see it. If he did want out Manure would almost certainly blast us out of the water with an offer. Just don’t see it I’m afraid.

          • Caspurs 15/07/2018 at 11:08 am

            Neither do I.

            • Fat Bertha 15/07/2018 at 11:32 am

  • Bruxie 15/07/2018 at 11:07 am

    Cutting cloth accordingly…
Bale as a marquee signing plus a couple of cheaper options (Grealish etc.) = three expensive signings and their wages.
    Β£300k/week = two worldies @ Β£150k/week.
    Savings on outgoing dross.
A bit like keeping Toby on a higher wage to avoid a new signing plus wages.

    • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 11:17 am

It would be nice to get a good signing but Im not going to waste the rest of the summer thinking about it and getting frustrated.
The history is not with us on that.
Im hoping Levy will surprise us now the stadium is nearly finished with someone who can really help.
I am looking forward to Lucas Moura adding some creativity to our game but I cant bank on too much.
      Id rather be pleasantly surprised.

  • Matt 15/07/2018 at 11:26 am

So long as we buy one real quality creative midfielder I think we’ve moved forward in the creativity stakes. This may be heresy but I always thought Dembele flattered to deceive a little. He is a very good player but the 25 yard dribbles that looked so impressive were actually a slower way of getting the ball forward than a 25 yard pass. Winks showed that a bit before his injury.

    • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 11:34 am

I cant agree with the flattering to deceive bit re Dembele. If he would have been different he would have been a Zidane or Cantona. He ticked many boxes for us.
      Strong tackler,can dribble,protects the ball,accurate passer,goid micro vision.
The fact that he never had a bigger vision is not his fault.Maybe his hesitancy in going for goal sometimes was.
      But he dud the job.
To replace him is diffiucult enough. To replace him with better is very difficult and very expensive.
Winks could but also could not.
Its not an easy fill Matt.

    • SpurAndy πŸ’ πŸ₯§ 15/07/2018 at 11:34 am

Heresy, off with his head! Seriously I’ve loved Dembele in the last few years. Used to frustrate me a bit before that. Now I love the way he protects and wins the ball. This allows others to move into position to start an attacking move. Granted he’s not much in the way of creativity but as a holding midfielder I don’t think there’s many better. I think we’ll miss him when he’s gone but just my opinion and can understand those that have a different view.

      • UnkleTaff 15/07/2018 at 11:41 am

Dembele used to be good at retaining possession but he’s not so good at it any more. He’s far too easily dispossessed these days for my liking and gives too many free kicks away in dangerous positions when he tries to get it back.

Like Alderweireld his best days are behind him and the pair of them need to be sold this summer if we are to progress this season.

        • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 11:46 am

Toby doesnt look fit to me but maybe never be back.
Dembele I think got tired the last month of our season.
I have more faith with Dembele.
He isnt easily replaced as Ive mentioned.

          • UnkleTaff 15/07/2018 at 11:52 am

I don’t think he’s going to be as difficult to replace as you think. Some of our best performances last season came when he wasn’t playing.

Liverpool at home, Madrid away and Madrid at home. Dembele didn’t feature at all in the first two and came on as a sub in the third only after we’d gone 3-0 up.

            • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 11:55 am

I know what a stalwart he has been. Tough and steady in the middle.
Who will replavce him that will improve us?

  • UnkleTaff 15/07/2018 at 11:38 am

To all those of who who are ambivalent about us signing Grealish, which homegrown player would you like to see us bring in instead (I say homegrown as we currently only have six such players and we urgently need two more if we are to declare a squad of 25 for the forthcoming season)?

In an ideal world I’d like to see Maguire accompany Grealish as the two homegrown players recruited this summer.

    • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 11:43 am

I think its one thing to find the best homegrown players and another to find the best players.
Also whether they are priced within our limitations.
So the relativity of those things has to come into the debate.
Yes I go with those two.
It doesnt fill Dembekes shoes though does it

      • UnkleTaff 15/07/2018 at 11:45 am

That’s not the point I’m making, Ron. We need two homegrown players (three if Rose leaves). You can scour the continent all you like, it’s not going to address the issue that without those players we’ll be hampering ourselves by not being able to declare a 25-man squad.

        • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 11:49 am

I thought Id mentioned Id go with those two.
Maguire us a beast in the air, attacking and defence. Grealish looks capable but not top drawer.
          Thats good enough
But replacing Dembele is number one for me

    • Sexy Beast 15/07/2018 at 12:30 pm

Afternoon girls, no idea who we are likely to sign, we do have a lot of players to move on, maybe that is of equal importance to DL.

Im travelling this morning so wont see ut till later but for me I like good footie.
It should be a very good match.
The french are very fluid and talented. The Croats are physical which lays the groundwork for magical Modric to create.
Who from Modric and Mbpappe will be more influential in the game will be the game.
    They are both tremendous.
This is what the game itself us about. These two dynamic teams that fought through to get where they are.
    Non dreamers. Doers.

  • HD 15/07/2018 at 2:32 pm

Two things: 1. I am clam over incomings/outgoings. 2. Fatty, please tell your farver β€œhi” from me. 3. C’mon Hugo! Lift the big trophy. Dawg, out, more vacation awaits.

I just love that the Irdning defenders appealed for offside on the 21st goal.

  • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 4:57 pm

Just arrived at home had a look at the penalty…looked like his reaction was to hand ball it after it dipped.
    Only my opinion

    • 61SpursNut 15/07/2018 at 5:03 pm

      But are you certain?

      • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 5:12 pm

      Oponion dip?

      • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 5:12 pm

        Less Gaullic dip

    • Flat Oeuf 15/07/2018 at 5:22 pm

I agree Ron, he moved his hand to the ball. If you check where he’s looking, he follows it all the way with his eyes and hand.

      • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 5:24 pm

Yes I thought he kept his hand out of the way and he then reacted and pulled his hand down to meet the ball
An automatic reaction to stop the ball. Penalty!

  • Flat Oeuf 15/07/2018 at 5:20 pm

    Pogba finally makes sense.

  • SpurAndy πŸ’ πŸ₯§ 15/07/2018 at 5:21 pm

Surprised that world class defender Lovren has let them score 3.

    • Flat Oeuf 15/07/2018 at 5:22 pm

Yup. A Spurs World Cup-winning captain and Golden Boot winner.

How’d ya like them apples, Dejan?

  • UnkleTaff 15/07/2018 at 6:09 pm

Why was Griezman’s free kick given as an own goal? It looked like it was on target to me so surely it should have been be given to him?

  • UnkleTaff 15/07/2018 at 6:10 pm

Any arguments with Perisic as the player of the tournament?

    • 61SpursNut 15/07/2018 at 6:28 pm

Also A great tournament byvthe Ruskies

    • Matt 15/07/2018 at 6:43 pm

And England! We can’t let the revisionists talk it down into a failure- young team went out, had a go and came 4th and we got the golden boot πŸ‘’*.

      * It doesn’t actually look like that I believe.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 15/07/2018 at 6:46 pm

That looks like Mo Salah’s boot.

        • DAVID 15/07/2018 at 6:53 pm

Golden boot and winning trophy lifted by our keeper, sounds good to me.

      • ronwol196061 15/07/2018 at 7:15 pm

        They were ok
        Nothing special
        And lacked the quality needed
They were not the only ones

They looked strong early but really were not good enough

  • Superspoz πŸ† 15/07/2018 at 7:00 pm

        • McG ⚽⚽ 15/07/2018 at 8:26 pm

exactly, worlds apart on that front. Hope bapps keeps that out of his game!

  • cavey 15/07/2018 at 7:49 pm

When Kane’s name was announced as the golden boot winner, it was met by a round of boo’s. Funny that, what TF did Kane do to upset them.

    • UnkleTaff 15/07/2018 at 7:53 pm

As I understand it the boos were coming from the Croatian contingent so I’m guessing it has something to do with this ‘rivalry’ with Dejan Lovren?

      • SpurAndy πŸ’ πŸ₯§ 15/07/2018 at 8:25 pm

Didn’t see the awards, was Harry there to get it?

        • DAVID 15/07/2018 at 9:09 pm

What you planning to do with the Β£5000 you won for having Croatia in the sweepstake ?
Cas is probably on his way to Monte Carlo to invest his winnings.

  • DAVID 15/07/2018 at 9:19 pm

Great for HK that he won the golden boot, particularly after some of the press turned on him after the last couple of games.
Hopefully he gets some rest before the start of the season, perhaps he will score one or two in August for a change.

  • SpurAndy πŸ’ πŸ₯§ 15/07/2018 at 9:25 pm

One of the best WC’s I can remember. Respeck to Russia for a well run tourney. Almost every match a looker.

    • DAVID 15/07/2018 at 9:34 pm

Absolutely, plus the warnings in some quarters of wide scale violence against other teams supporters by the Russian ultras never materialised either.
Appears to have been a great success on and off the pitch.

  • Fat Bertha 15/07/2018 at 10:29 pm

Did you see the TDF today Andy ? Brutal stuff on the cobblestones but made for great viewing.

Oh, I bet. Lots of jiggling flesh and bruised perineums.

I don’t recall seeing anyone argue with him.

I believe Modric had a quiet word with him, although it wasn’t under oath..

    • AntSpurs 16/07/2018 at 12:47 am

And Tripps is smoking a cigar, whilst Kane is having a few drags.

  • TCY 16/07/2018 at 12:56 am

It was an exciting WC from start to finish. Our lads, the Belgies and the acrobats did themselves proud.

Still hoping we can add a high caliber AM or striker to spell Harry/back him up in those games where he should be lifted at 60 minutes.

I see the sentiment here is to peddle the Moose and Toby. Agree on first but not on second. We ought to get another good year from Toby then sell him to someone on the Continent. It’s bad enough seeing how good rest faced boy must be in La Liga. Imagine what life would be like had he gone to Chelsea.

This is the year of The Special One’s biennial breakdown. Chelsea is on the way down, Arse rebuilding. It’s us, Pool and the Mancs. A good time to splurge on a game changer or two.

  • Syd 16/07/2018 at 3:11 am

After seeing that game I would not want modric back at Spurs. He totally went missing and hardly put in an effort. We definitely need to buy one or two game changers urgently and get them into the squad training with the rest right now. The trouble with getting a very top notch striker to backup Harry Kane is that they do not want to back up Harry Kane they want to start. Pulisic and rebic. Hopefully Harry Winks can improve Out of Sight this season. This should be the season where he really proves himself to be the play we need him to be

    1. We are staying away from politics I believe here

    2. Grealish has one foot, albeit possibly a good one

    3. Modric was fantastic at the World Cup generally

    4. Mbpappe is a tremendous talent

    5. Giroud was not bad,he had a role as did Raheem Sterling

    3. Modric was fantastic at the World Cup generally. Golden Bollox Luca!
    4. Mbpappe is a tremendous talent . No argument here……
    5. Giroud was not bad,he had a role as did Raheem Sterling. They won is spite of him.
