Shut yer gob, J****

It’s no coincidence that Judas and J**** have the same amount of letters:

Why do former Liverpool players who end up as pundits bend over backwards to support them, yet this no-mark former Spur is selling off our best manager in years to the opposition.

It’s emblamatic of the kind of distinctly average player we used to have at the club, and their mentality. Losers who won nothing of note yet seem to think their opinion on non-football tactics etc carry some weight.

Shut your fackin gob, J****. You don’t speak for Poch or have a direct line to him. You’re just trying to build a media profile, based on a below-par career, and now at the expense of the fine Club who were kind enough to give you a living.

You twat.

Does anyone know of a football stats site that offers a similar analysis to that provided by 442’s Stat Zone (before they discontinued it)?

According to the place across the road Lucas Moura made 32 successful challenges yesterday and I find that very hard to believe as that seems a ridiculously high number even for a combative midfield enforcer let alone a predominantly attacking player.

    • Bruxie 19/08/2018 at 10:19 am

      Isn’t Opta Index available?

    • randy 19/08/2018 at 10:59 am
      • UnkleTaff 19/08/2018 at 11:33 am

        Not really, but thanks anyway.

442’s Stat Zone offered a really useful ‘dashboard’ which detailed exactly where on the pitch players made successful and unsuccessful passes, tackles, shots, blocks, etc. It offered a really useful visual snapshot of a player’s contribution to a game but sadly they discontinued it last year.

It seems if you want that level of analysis (from Opta, e.g.) you need to pay for it now.

Unless I can see where on the pitch successful passes are being made I’m reluctant to use passing stats as an indicator of how good a game a player had, for example. I’d argue that four successful ten-yard passes in the safety of your own half isn’t as useful a stat, say, as three misplaced passed but one killer pass in the attacking third. The 442 dashboard allowed you to see that.

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 11:32 am

I think Mouras non stop running and getting stuck in was a big factor along with his flicks. He missed a sitter and overan the ball once or twice but I thought he was terrific yesterday as was our team.
Mouras control generally is excellent and he worked the whole game pressing constantly

    Morning All,
Excellent result but we had our moments.
The first 10 minutes of the second half was buttock clenchingly bad.
Poch came good however with two superb substitutions.
Dembele replacing a Mitrovic bullied Sanchez and Lamela giving us speed and penetration in midfield.
The beginning of any season is fraught with uncertainty and we’ll grow into form before the Liverpooh game.
    An all round good day!
Publicans around Wembley expect us to be there until Christmas. They say Wembley is booked until then.
    Contingency planning, I hope.

  • Sexy Beast 19/08/2018 at 10:45 am

Would the pitch really be unplayable 24 hours after a NFL game on it? I have no idea but surely with a large ground staff crew it could be ok? How about the NFL boys play in plimsoles? Interestingly Wet Spam are away to lesta that weekend…….

    • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 10:57 am

      Same for both teams.

I can remember what pitches looked like in 1970s. Sometimes they painted the mud green or put so much sand down it looked like a beach.

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 11:52 am

I think there is little kicking the ball in American football just running and tackling mostly so there has to be a lot less divots

      • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 11:56 am

For a sport called ‘football’, there is precious little kicking. There’s a lot of sweating, grunting, and occasional throwing.

Most professional sports are competitive and have great talented players. American Football is a little more sophisticated in its strategies and the way the game is played. I like American Football

          • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 12:28 pm

I didn’t pass comment on how good the game is. Just that it seems to be somewhat of a misnomer.

  • Matt 19/08/2018 at 11:36 am

Hope we resist the temptation to cash in on Dembele. I’m a fan of Dier but I’d like to see a bit of Dembele Winks action this season.

    • UnkleTaff 19/08/2018 at 11:49 am

    • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 11:54 am

This is why I want Dembele to stay for as long as possible. He can pass on his know how to the younger players…

      • Matt 19/08/2018 at 12:07 pm

Exciting, this midfield partnership may be.

        • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:08 pm

Great to see Winks back out on the pitch. I can’t believe talk of Dembele being a spent force, the man is a beast!! Daniel Levy, give this man a contract extension, he still has much he can contribute

          • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:14 pm

I agree. But the only way is if we improve the position as he is getting older and his price will go down greatly

            • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:20 pm

He will walk away anyway. If he will accept a lesser deal he would be a great guy to keep around

‘Do or not do, young Winks. There is no try’.

  • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:07 pm

Just watched the game, lots of positives to take out
    1. Lucas Moura. For an apparent waste of space, he played very well. Elusive, energetic, pressed hard on defence, and that sublime goal. He is showing signs of being a great buy
    2. Kieran Trippier. Picked up where he left off in Russia. Dangerous balls into the box, and that goal. Kicked on in Russia and not looking back
    3. Toby. Great to see him back in the first team
    4. Poch. Inspired subs, something I don’t think I’ve seen before from him. Dembele and Lamela were influential in us regaining control and getting the win. We have a very nice pool of attacking midfield players now, Moura, Dele, CE, Lamela, and Son when he gets back, we displayed a lot of creativity by platoon today
I thought this was another meritorious performance against a Fulham side that played very well and should trouble other teams in the league this season

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:12 pm

Id agree. If Winks comes through I think we will have everything covered. I noticed yesterday Eriksen is even playing a little deeper than he normally would so that also covers the area. The interchanging of the players was fantastic and we didnt have Sissokos weaker passing to slow us down although he might be good just bringing the ball out of defence and playing a more defensive role like carrying the ball from our box and laying it off at the half way line etc

      • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:17 pm

With all those AMs out there it was almost our version of the old Barcelona strategy. Our movement today was excellent, quite different from previous Poch Spurs teams. I hope this is a sign of things to come

        • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:22 pm

I agree. Moura definately adds to the flow,as did Lamela when he came on. Dele was fantastic yesterday and Eriksen good too. Just a great flow with Trippier as well (Davies did ok in this one too)
          Fantastic team performance

          • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 12:33 pm

I also noticed Dele going deep before Dembele came on and adding defensive cover because Fulham looked pretty good going forwards. Their problems will be getting a solid defence sorted.

  • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:18 pm

I wonder if Poch will play more conservative at United against their midfield or more attacking.

    • Matt 19/08/2018 at 12:20 pm

I’d go with the team we started with. We’ll be doing a bit more defending I suspect.

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:24 pm

I think Dembele has to play though in this one from the off, that would mean one less outfield player ahead of him or putting one less at the back

        • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:32 pm

You are right Ron. We need a strongman to try and control the MF. Rest Moose all you want but he has to play the games against Utd, Arse, Liverpool, Citeh and Chelsea when fit

          • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:34 pm

Iits a question of really do you go to OT to attack United or to take control of the game by winning the midfield battle with attrition

            • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:36 pm

They will try to play football at home. We need to bust them on the counter

Yep, he should be conserved for the ‘premium match day experiences’ 😁😁.

And of course getting enough other minutes to avoid getting rusty. Yesterday was just right, coming on to affect the game very considerably.

              Its makes sense

  • Matt 19/08/2018 at 12:18 pm

When fit our CMs will be Winks; Dembele; Dier; Wanyama; Sissoko. While I’d still like a modric quality (who wouldn’t?) we’re hardly down to the bare bones.

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:25 pm

Im noticing Eriksen has been playing a little deeper not really in Dembeles position but not as high up as usual and he is doing well there

      • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:34 pm

We were pinging it around really well. Not much of that pointless passing at the back. We showed real intent and it was great to watch at times

        • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:36 pm

Yes we moved the ball out of defence better. I cant stand it when Sanchez and Verts pass it sideways for 3 minutes. All our players helped the flow yesterday by moving the ball quickly and up and solid passing

          • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:37 pm

It’s not just the passing, the runs were there too. Evolution gives me hope

This is the first opportunity to make a big statement. We look very composed this season, the team is together. I’d love to see us put Manu to the sword and serve notice to the rest of the league

                • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:52 pm

There wasnt that crazy running yesterday it all looked purposeful. They looked more mature. They knew where everyone was. They didnt bother so much with that incessant back passing (maybe Fulham had something to do with that..I dont know) and really it was all about the flow and being on the same page

  • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:32 pm

I think Moura adds to the class factor. That ball talent that gives a little bit of what VDV gave or a Ginola. Its something for me that is very Tottenham. Moura has that and if he gets more confident and wants it more he will grow into that. Its not too late for him

    • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 12:36 pm

      He’s only 26!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im talking about growing into a really great player. His talent is unquestionable but his desire to kick it up more will be the big question.
Chemistry is very important and yesterday there was a lot of chemistry for us on the field..with Moura he needs to continue to create chemistry with Eriksen and the others as they all get more confident together and take that flow upward. We would be unbeatable

Yes. I like a lot about Dembele. But he does lack a bigger vision. Its difficult to have everything
But we could have him if our other players are creating a flow forward.
Eriksen and Moura picking up the ball earlier really helps

                  • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 1:27 pm

CE, Moura and Lamela were all very direct and assertive yesterday. It could work

AS muched as I liked Mouras game yesterdayI honestly thought Dele played one of his best games for us. He was in the game constantly and more calm and more focused than any game ive seen him in. He was controlled

    • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 12:50 pm

What about Lamela’s instant contribution? Most effective run from him in ages. He looks sharp and eager.

      • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 12:51 pm

Could Eric be a super sub, or a starter?

        • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 12:51 pm

          • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 12:54 pm

Lamela fit right in. It all give Poch more options. Lamela if he can continue the quality he is showing in attack is also great in pressing. Just more options

            • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 1:06 pm

Erik was excellent. With Son back, and Winks too, our MF stocks suddenly look pretty good. Does Poch finally have the players he wanted, because his subs were bold

              • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 1:10 pm

He made great subs. He knew with Toby and Verts he had stability so he could then switch to 4 at the back. Put on Dembele to own the middle and expand with Lamela.
Dembeles age and health is the only question. Also his creativity. But if Eriksen can take on the Modric role or Winks can grow into a great all rounder in that position we are set

                • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 1:12 pm

Its not good enough for Winks to be good,He has to be great. He needs to be a Steven Gerrard or such to make that middle his own. There is too much riding on that position

                  • McG ⚽⚽ 19/08/2018 at 1:14 pm

Those are my thoughts too, he’s looked good, but never great so far.

                    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 1:17 pm

Its a pivotal position. Everything else is covered. If Eriksen could become Modric (and he might) we will be ok. Winks I dont thing is that creative but if he can add as I mention like a Gerrard might we will be ok

                  • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 1:14 pm

What I liked was that we didn’t stand around expecting CE to create everything, all of the AMs moved in concert. Winks or anyone else won’t necessarily need to be the main man, they can be a creative unit

                    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 1:18 pm

Yes. To me this is a flow. This interchanging was always the best of what we saw with Real Madrid over the years..a little less square than Barca.

                    • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 1:20 pm

We tried to bring them out and attack vertically too. Something Leicester and Vardy were very good at

                    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 1:26 pm

Yes and we have more links than they do. That long pass that hit Vardy was a one off in a way. It clicked most of that season and was more of what they did…through Mahrez too..but with all our players in une and moving forward we have many more options

                    • GDawg 19/08/2018 at 1:30 pm

Last year we looked at times like we were reading off the beginners’ playbook. Yesterday they showed us something else entirely. This is going to be fascinating, and hopefully a whole lot of fun

We will be untouchable. Accuracy and speed of passing and chemistry between the players

Both for me, I really feel our bench is looking strong now, can rotate the entire season and not be weaker for it. Dembele, Lamela & Winks for Moura, Sanchez & Dier, can also switch from 3 to 4 at the back at any given time, that’s a real positive!

I care about having a solid defence. Getting the ball out quickly and surely and watching the flow coming down the field with our players moving into space. Its simple really.
Chemistry between the players will create goals in abundance. The flow has to go forward not side ways and all will inherit the oeuf

                • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 2:32 pm

I’m hoping Harry’s goal is what he needed to get back his best form. The execution was superb, he didn’t hit one like that at the World Cup. It’s all in the head and whatever he says, it’s a cloud lifted imo.

        • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 19/08/2018 at 1:54 pm

I think with lots of action all around him and with quicker passing out of midfield he wilkl get more service. Slow build ups and its a waste of time to even have a striker only from crosses and thats a low success percentage. More movement and more goals for Harry

They had an open training day in the week and 2,000 fans turned many schoolchildren were there getting selfies with the players. Chrissie signed hundreds of autographs. He was interviewed and came across as a totally down to earth and thoroughly decent guy who works bloody hard. He was asked about being a rare black manager and he said he wanted to be there on merit, not because he was getting positive discrimination.

Which kinda puts it all into perspective, we will soon be 6/7/800 million in debt due to the stadium whilst they can spunk £700 million up the wall. A different ball game one could say!

      • Hartley 19/08/2018 at 6:54 pm

        • Sexy Beast 19/08/2018 at 7:25 pm

Many reports suggest the cost is spiralling up at a rate of knots.

          • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 7:28 pm

            For Mace I’m guessing.

            • Sexy Beast 19/08/2018 at 7:32 pm

              3700 workers @ £200 (this is conservative) a day is £740k a day x 5 = £3,700,000 a week

              • Sexy Beast 19/08/2018 at 7:32 pm

And that is a 5 day week!

                • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 7:41 pm

By Christmas that would be 100 million or thereabouts. Assuming the whole workforce is required and not just the sparks and a finishing crew.

                  • Sexy Beast 19/08/2018 at 7:53 pm

Someone has gotta pay it that is for sure. Seems like the work at weekends has subsided, i’m guessing that the spending on wages and overtime is being reigned in……that suggests to me Levy is paying this.

                    • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 7:56 pm

Yep. These costs will kill Mace as a company, so the stadium work would stop. ENIC are going to have to front it.

                    • Fat Bertha 19/08/2018 at 8:01 pm

Surely as it’s all Levy’s fault he will be paying for everything and doing all the work himself? That’s if he has any time left over after picking the team and washing the kit and putting diesel in the minibus.

I’d imagine it would be. But we’ve been increasing our turnover on a grand scale. Better CL run, Wembley gates. We’ve not spent a penny on transfers this summer, and the only significant wage increases I can think of within the 17/18 financial year were Kane and Poch, but only a few weeks before year end. I reckon serious dosh has gone from our coffers.

            • Sexy Beast 19/08/2018 at 7:35 pm

Yep, i’d guess that the spiralling cost has Levy in a bollock vice like grip.

I tell you what mate, I hope in years to come fans will remember what Povh put into this stadium. He got the consistent CL runs, he got us big prize money in the PL. without him there’d be a lot more debt, or a lesser stadium.

Just heard an amazing stat- Manure have spent 711mil on transfers since Fergie retired.

More to the point, the net spend since Fergie retired has been 508 million approx.

That neatly works out at around 100 million per year from the coffers to get precisely where? Not close to a title.

    • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 7:19 pm

  • Matt 19/08/2018 at 7:33 pm

Well done Chris Hughton. Top bloke. Read the BBC summary; pictures and moans from Mourinho. Not a quote or mention of the winning manager!

    • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 7:46 pm

Hughton doing it all over again. If he keeps them up it will be a great achievement.

  • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 7:54 pm

Man U fans on phone-in bemoaning that Mourinho hadn’t been backed by the club. Chris Sutton is enjoying himself reminding these sad tossers just how much José has spent on players José now says aren’t good enough.
    Can’t make it up.

I’ve only seen a Lamela a few times since his return but I must say I am impressed so far. I wasn’t much of a fan tbh but I might have to change my opinion. That run for Kane’s goal was great. Direct, speed and no messing about with a pass that found his man. He always tended to over elaborate and end up losing the ball (after some good initial work). I hope in his long lay off he watched a lot of videos of his performances to see where he could improve because it seems to me he has. It’s a fine line between success and failure and if he has corrected some of the faults in his game then, yes, ahem…. He’ll be like a new signing.

There was a great item on Radio Five this am about Brighton and their community links.

I was an apprentice with Chris. When I first met him at age 16 he struck me as a really nice, down to earth bloke. As it transpired that we had a common bond (Spurs) we talked a lot! He was in their youth set-up so we nattered about football.
Back then, the engineers liked him too for his work ethic. He was reliable, hard working and quite humble (almost shy and reserved).
Imagine my shock when he appeared in the first team as an agressive, combative full-back!
Can’t speak highly enough about the man. Lovely guy. Humble. Intelligent.
He will be back at Spurs one day….

    • Chauvelin 19/08/2018 at 10:06 pm

He’s accrued a lot of experience and knows how to assemble a very decent team.

Do you have use of a helicopter.

      • GDawg 20/08/2018 at 12:12 am

    • Caspurs 19/08/2018 at 11:46 pm

Er, a fun ride on an underground train, then a 5 minute walk to the stadium.
I would (strongly) advise you enjoy a beverage or two after the game before leaving the stadium to let the crowds subside.

      • GDawg 20/08/2018 at 12:12 am

She will need me to buy Wembley VIP tickets for lounge access. So it won’t be a problem. Because it’s an international and not a club game will they think less of me if I rock up in my Spurs jersey?

        • Hartley 20/08/2018 at 12:17 am

If they do, poke them in the face and call them chavs. They’ll apologise and offer you some proseco.

          • GDawg 20/08/2018 at 12:18 am

            Or some vodka more likely

            • Hartley 20/08/2018 at 12:21 am

If they are proper chavs it’ll be cheap strong cider with a mouthful already gone.

                • Bruxie 20/08/2018 at 8:46 am

I’m pretty sure Wembley VIP tickets/seats don’t allow team colours/shirts – but you’d better check. Even for internationals.
Friend of mine was asked to keep his coat on so as not to show his Spurs shirt. He was in one of the hospitality lounges.

                  • GDawg 20/08/2018 at 9:11 am

I’ve just finished season five and, whilst it’s unlikely o be winning any awards in the ‘quality drama’ category, it certainly isn’t lacking in excitement.

Well worth a look if high-octane sci-fi is your thing.*

*Although, as with a lot of series, it takes a season before it really finds its feet.

Have you seen either of these? I’ve heard good words about both of them (and that 12 Monkeys, in particular, got really good … and then it was cancelled).

        • Fat Bertha 20/08/2018 at 12:35 pm

I’ve started them all but for one reason or another not stuck with them. The sheer volume of stuff to watch is a bit overwhelming. I’m five eps in to Sharp Objects, which is pretty good.

          • UnkleTaff 20/08/2018 at 12:42 pm

The problem I find with most stuff is that it invariably takes a few episodes (and often a whole series) before they develop a real sense of identity and only then do they start to get really good. Which is why I tend to stick with the ones I’ve started.

Sadly this approach doesn’t always pay off as there’s a couple of series (Person of Interest and Fringe) which I abandoned midway into their third seasons as it was clear by that stage they were not worth continuing with.

The 100 I’m definitely glad I stayed with as it’s been, for the most part, compulsive viewing. It would have been easy to dismiss it as just another teen angst drama after the first few episodes but it developed into much, much more than that as it went on.

      • Chauvelin 20/08/2018 at 3:19 pm

May thanks for these suggestions FB.

  • Bruxie 20/08/2018 at 12:43 pm

    This just in…
    “20 August 2018|Tottenham Hotspur

We have agreed with UEFA that the first home matchday of this season’s Champions League group stage, scheduled on either matchday one (week commencing 17 September) or matchday two (week commencing 1 October), will be staged at Wembley Stadium.

Both matchdays are due to take place between our two Premier League home fixtures against Liverpool (Saturday 15 September) and Cardiff City (Saturday 6 October), which we confirmed last week had been switched to Wembley.

As a further update, should we be drawn at home in Round Three of the Carabao Cup (week commencing 24 September), then we can apply for special dispensation from the EFL board to reverse the fixture or play at a neutral venue as both our new stadium and Wembley are unavailable during this week.

Gold Season Ticket holders registered for the Automatic cup ticketing scheme are advised that this only operates for cup ties played at the new stadium. Therefore, the scheme will not operate for either of the above fixtures and tickets can be purchased individually.”

    • UnkleTaff 20/08/2018 at 12:45 pm

Wanyama as well to come back. When he does I think it will take about 6 games for him to get up to pace. Giving Dier a break and competition. Dembele was great in the game and Poch was brilliant with his changes. Fulham need to spend more money although it appears that is not always the best policy. 🙂

    • Chauvelin 20/08/2018 at 3:29 pm

Sessegnon was drifting about all over the place. That may be fine when you are on the front foot, but not when you are under the cosh. As a team trying to integrate new players, they need to learn where their colleagues are and if Sessegnon is acting like a wild card, he’ll cause as many problems for his own team as the opposition. In my opinion.
