SHELFY’s N.L.D. Bloeug

SHELFY WRITES:

Going Inter the Library with Momentum

Last up Inter at Wembley. The result? Never in doubt. Our boys outplayed, outfought, out scored and now have an outside chance of progressing in the CL, their destiny back in their own hands. (I love that word… Destiny), Winning that game was probably even more important than just keeping our CL hopes alive, much more important than that; it provided a confidence boost, rather than a feeling of deflation, a momentum boost as we are on a good solid unbeaten run.

Next up Arsenal, the result, shouldn’t be in doubt. Our boys can outplay, outfight, outmuscle, outrun and outscore Arsenal and give themselves an outside chance of winning the league, their destiny (that word agin but now in my best Darth Vader voice) is to be a force to be reckoned with, champions in the making. I don’t even mind if some of the dark side, dark arts are used in this game, whatever it takes (sorry Unk).

So which Spurs will show up? The ones who ran their hearts out against Inter or the ones who played too much like fancy Dans and blew a lead a few weeks earlier against Inter (and Watford, and PSV away). Being a derby my money, which is admittedly a scarce commodity, is on the former.

I think we all expect a game of blood and thunder. Blood for sure if Coco Lamela is playing; thunder, well I haven’t looked at the weather forecast. I am sure both sets of players will be ‘well up for it’ because a slow start could be a disaster.

They have momentum too, a long unbeaten run going, but really apart from the draw with Scousehampton who have they played? Leicester, Palace, Bournemouth, Wolves and a bunch of second tier European clubs, and they even haven’t won all of those games. I think they will be confident to begin with, but the stuffing could be quickly knocked out of them if we bully them like I think we can. We will need to do that anyway to win, like Poch says our boys need to be warriors, winning their duels needs to be a matter of honor.

So the busy period starts, who can the coach rest?

Lloris, not likely and really no need. He has been playing a lot better recently and his distribution in particular has improved. I like that he sprinkles in a lot more long balls for HK to fight for rather than poncing about with it at the back.

Aurrier and Davies, not likely as Trips is injured and though Rose has ‘form’ in this game he may not be fit enough to start, midweek next may be a better time for his reintroduction, though Poch surprised us all (and our Danny) last year by playing him against Madrid.

Will Jan and Toby form the central defensive partnership? I think so. Jan is famed for his ability as a natural athlete, to be able to run all day, so I think the young gun Juan will have to wait for the midweek game for his next start.

Sissoko, isn’t he undroppable right now? Who ever thought they would read that?

Winks – sadly I think he will be rested and the bigger lads will play, enter Dier, not too shabby a replacement for this type of game

Up front I can’t see anything other than the DESK starting this game. D, E and S are relatively fresh having had time out due to injuries and K, well he isn’t sitting this one out unless hell freezes over.

Maybe Son gets rested and used as an impact sub and one of Lucas or Lamela starts. I wouldn’t mind either way, all three bring plenty of positives.

Tactically I think we will be back to our normal formation 4231 with Dele in a freer role than he was against the racist scum. Arsenal haven’t had a dangerous deep lying playmaker since Fabregas took the Russian oil money so need to man mark like he did against Georgie Porgie.

Just 4 more hours until the early kick off. Anticipation anyone? Exited much?

  • Syd 02/12/2018 at 10:18 pm

Poch has made a serious error in judgement with his team selections. For one, you are playing a team that is absolutely determined to beat you at their home ground.
2 you start with your strongest team giving you the most confidence and the best chance of winning the game.
The problem as it has now turned out is that the vertongen is gone, Toby is probably pissed off, and Foyth is probably devastated. For the first time I really really have trouble supporting posh for this game. Don’t get me wrong I still think he’s the best manager we’ve had in many a year and I hope he stays but I also hope he learnt something from this. Only my opinion don’t shoot me

    • cavey 03/12/2018 at 12:45 am

Syd, Poch was so fucking naive to not play Alderweirveld. Verts wasn’t ready for such a high powered game and Poch was being utterly stupid for putting Verts in there instead of Alderweirveld. The team wasn’t properly tuned up as were Arsenal and were too slow , where Le’Arse were tuned up like a fiddle at the Royal Albert Hall on an important concert night. Aurier and Dier were a fucking joke and would have looked bad in a Leighton Orient team. Foyth was left exposed by Vertngen where Alderweirveld would have directed him and protected him. Poch is proving to be a bit stupid. There’s a fine line in telling the masses that he trusts everyone in his squad and giging Aurier and Dier the responsibility of being alert and playing safe, when they go out and let the rest of the tean down. Foyth I forgive completely for his error, had Alderweirveld been out there that error wouldn’t have happened. Poch is to blame for today and he does’t make changes until it’s too late.

I would never suggest we don’t have an undesirable element within the fan base (that would indeed be naive), but this sort of behaviour isn’t something our club is generally associated with. It’s more the fact actions such as that reflect poorly (unfairly) on the majority.

BUGGER! Mark Hughes has been sacked by Saints.

Expect a new manager bounce on Wednesday.

  • Goatboy333 03/12/2018 at 10:01 am

Still feeling a bit bruised after yesterday. It reminded me of the league game there last year. We went in as favourites and they outmuscled and outplayed us. That place has become the new Stamford Bridge i.e a stadium we seem incapable of playing our best football at. Let’s hope they prove me wrong in the league cup.

As an aside, have we ever played 14 games at the start of a season and still not drawn a game?

Breaking news – Hughes gone. Couldn’t they have waited until after Wed?!

    • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 10:05 am

I was really hoping Hughes would cling on for our game.

    • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 03/12/2018 at 10:57 am

In 1981-82 we played the first 14 games without drawing. That was a record which we’ve now equalled. We are currently on a run of 18, including the last four games of last season, which is one short our longest run of league games without a draw, excluding the regional wartime leagues, which was 19 between 15th Feb and 13th Sep 1930. In the final war league season of 1945-46 (Football league south) we went 23 games without drawing between 12th Sep 1945 and 2nd Feb 1946.

  • Goatboy333 03/12/2018 at 10:10 am

Always thought he was a dreadful manager, made worse by the fact he thought he was so much better than he was. 1 win in last 15 but still a bit odd to sack him after a draw again Manure. Thursday morning after a 5-o stuffing would have been much more appropriate!

    • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 10:20 am

Maybe the Saints board think a new man might get something out of us after our dreadful second half performance? We looked knackered.

    • Superspoz 🏆 03/12/2018 at 10:21 am

The fact that he couldn’t beat utd as well conceding a goal from lukaku is probably why he had to go ..

  • Goatboy333 03/12/2018 at 10:34 am

If the league table was based on the first 45 minutes Arsenal would be 18th. Now that is one crazy stat.

    • Hartley 03/12/2018 at 10:45 am

If the league table was based on a fair and just promotion system, Ar5eana1 wouldn’t be in it.

      • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 10:47 am

If the FA had been fair and just Arsenal would still be in Woolwich.

  • TCY 03/12/2018 at 12:20 pm

Mark Hughes gone after a draw with Manure. Where is justice? Not seeing a new manager bounce on Weds. Too soon. This normally well run club seems to be in disarray. HD—your thoughts?

    • HD 🇺🇸 03/12/2018 at 12:35 pm

Hughes has been hanging on for a few weeks. No surprise that he was sacked. It is a brutal, results only business. I too see no bounce, for the Saints, as they will have interim boss on Wednesday and we should come out with our nostrils flared.

      • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 03/12/2018 at 12:51 pm

Just heard a Saints fan on Talksport absolutely slaughtering the owners. Apparently since Cortese the current owners Liebher and Gao have stripped the club to its bare bones. Gao is Chinese and owns 80% but due to restrictions can’t get any money out of China even if he wanted to.
This is a proper example of how to run a club badly and where fans should feel rightly outraged.

        • TCY 03/12/2018 at 1:28 pm

Very interesting. How long have these bandits had the team? Sounds like a different club since Poch cane to WHL

          • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 03/12/2018 at 2:08 pm

Mark Liebher purchased the club in 2010 I think and brought in Cortese to run it which apparently he did, very well. Mark died but his wife/daughter(?) took over at which point she was shocked how much it was costing so then began the asset stripping by selling all their best players. Gao came in and bought 80% with the other 20% left in her hands.

        • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 1:56 pm

rAndy, how is it that Wolves’ Chinese owner Gao Guangchang doesn’t seem hindered by money restrictions? It isn’t a genuine problem imho.

          • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 03/12/2018 at 2:04 pm

Purely going on what the Saints fan said so can’t give an answer. Maybe it’s person related as opposed to general rule? Maybe the Saints Gao has been a naughty boy in China, dunno? The Saints fan sounded as if he knew what he was talking about though.

            • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 2:50 pm

The Wolves owner seems to be an important guy politically, so maybe he’s ‘more equal’ than others (a little nod to Animal Farm there ;->)

  • HD 🇺🇸 03/12/2018 at 12:55 pm

Agree Andy. Saints fans should be very worried that if they are relegated, at seasons end, the free fall could continue into the lower leagues, in future seasons.

    • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 1:01 pm

They’ve seen their neighbours Portsmouth collapse into the lower leagues and dread the same fate.

      • HD 🇺🇸 03/12/2018 at 1:40 pm

        Sunderland is another example

  • Ronwol196061 03/12/2018 at 1:53 pm

The idea that our team can arrive for the NLD even if their tanks are low and start off the way we did and it did not end was not good.
Poch didn’t try to change it till the 82nd minute
There are no excuses for me. We are pseudo Champions despite all their nonsense talk.
You have to earn everything and to me 4-2 was flattering for us.
    Speak tommorow

    • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 2:01 pm

Apparently, although I hadn’t noticed, Pochettino instructed Dier to drop back and play as a third CB between Jan and Juan, after they scored their equaliser.
However, that left a gap in midfield with Sissoko struggling on his own as we saw, and Foyth got robbed as he tried to carry the ball as he had no midfield out ball to play. Poch should have introduced Winks to help in CM, taking off Son.

      • Chauvelin 03/12/2018 at 2:03 pm

In short, Poch screwed that one up.

A foriegner with possibly no real understanding of what the significance of that move would have meant to us fans, at the time SSG he was deserving of playing at the highest level (UCL) and competing for the top honours which clearly with us he was not getting, not forgetting the fact that he was being offered 3 times what Levy was paying him, a lesson he still hasn’t learned it would seem with the wage that CE and Toby are currently on.
I for one can forgive him his faux par and will remember his skill set and be thankful he wore the Lilliwhite shirt for as long as he did. A former player wins the Ballon D’or, i tip my hat to him.

I agree with most of that SB, except the part about not knowing what agitating for a move to Chelsea would mean. Modric came up playing for Dinamo Zagreb who had heated derbies with Hajduk Split. He knows what playing a rival means and after four years in London he knew what a move to Chelsea would mean to us.

But yes, fabulous player; never a doubt of that

  • Syd 04/12/2018 at 1:44 am

    cavey

Hi cavey. I’m not really disappointed about the aurier selection as you normally plays very well with sissoko but I am really pissed off that he left Toby on the bench. In my belief he should have played Toby instead of Foyth and rested Toby for the following EPL game which was a much easier game. I’m sure Toby would have got through it. I also think Winks should have played instead of Dier but that is in hindsight so I’m not going to push that. The biggest mistake was not playing Toby and that was a huge huge mistake and I couldn’t believe it when I saw the team and I’m sure neither could Arsenal. In my humble opinion this was a monumental fuck up.
And now I’m taking a shit from all these idiot Arsenal fans down under

    • GDawg 04/12/2018 at 3:10 am

I agree. Leaving Toby out was a baffling decision that ultimately cost us the game. Even Toby and Foyth might have worked, Jan played like a guy who was short of a run

    • cavey 04/12/2018 at 7:17 am

Couldn’t agree more Syd, dropping Toby was a stupid under estimation of Arsenal’s ability and makes you wonder does Poch’s understanding of the rivalry exist at all.

  • Freund or Foe 04/12/2018 at 9:04 am
