Sexy Beast’s Cup Doth Not Runneth Over

To all those who’d rather win a League Cup or FA Cup then finish top four i hear you, sadly imo the domestic cups are not even close to a top four finish, (ask Willian) the best players want to play in the Champions League, thursday nights just don’t cut it, who watched the Arsenal or the Chelsea game this week? No one i’d guess, certainly not me!
If someone did a financial comparison of Spurs anual income compared to the others in the top six since the start of the Champions league era we would likely be hundreds and hundreds of millions behind Manure, Arse and Chelski, this inequality will take one hell of a long time to balance itself out and then you throw in the new Mothership and how much that will set us back financially this all points to a struggle for us to win something. However Pooch has demonstrated with a net spend of £15 million (this is truely remarkable) in his time at the helm that it is still possible to build a competitive side. Hoddle and Hargreaves are spot on, we are two top players away from being true challengers, Zaha this last window and a top Midfielder could have been the difference, fact is we just don’t know what went on in the transfer window, maybe Pooch has a very small pool of players that he targets and we just couldn’t get the clubs to part with them?
Who knows? I personally would rather finish 4th then win the League Cup if given a choice between the two, however i’d love to see us win a Cup and secure a top 4 place of course. Champions League is a legitimate target, we dominated both finalists last season don’t forget. We just need that bit of luck draw wise and the odd tight referee decision to go our way just like Liverpool had v City twice over two legs.
Last but not least we need to get into our new home, get our feet under the table and make it a fortress, this will be a game changer in the long run in so many ways.

  • GDawg 23/09/2018 at 11:45 am

Poch and Levy’s plan is a long term one. We will need to roll with the ups and downs that come with our modest squad for a while I think

    • Flat Oeuf 25/09/2018 at 9:56 am

Morning you bunch of legends. How the hell are ya?

  • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 23/09/2018 at 11:46 am

I see know reason why we can’t win a cup and get top 4. But I think the missing link maybe the psychological benefit of having won something. Yes, the Ropey is ropey and agree that playing somebody in Getbackistan doesn’t get the blood racing but unless we actually win something the players will not really have that self belief that they can win one of the top prizes. Leicester apart can anyone think of a team that’s won the PL or CL without winning at least one bit of silverware before? It’s not impossible as Leicester proved but it is very close to it imo.

    • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 12:13 pm

I’m inclined to agree with you r’Andy (just this once mind).
We have been on the cusp of winning something for the previous three seasons but, seem to come up short at the critical moments. My concern is that this will start to have a psychological effect on the team, it does seem to be a hurdle we need to get over but, at the expense of CL?
Not qualifying for the CL could mean another uphill battle to get back into the top 4, which might require increased investment in the team to achieve that, especially as it’s harder to attract players if you are not in the CL, is Levy prepared to sanction such spending considering annual revenue would drop by £40/50m?
We aren’t currently perceived as a team of perennial winners, and I wonder if that’s how top players view us, and whether that would go against us in our attempts to sign top players if we aren’t in the CL.
Both are valid goals but, win silverware or qualify for the CL, if I were put on the spot it would have to be CL, only for the reason that the income and opportunities (players) it provides the platform for greater long term success, provided the club invest properly and don’t sit on their laurels.

  • Elyid 23/09/2018 at 11:51 am

Doubtless we would all love to see Spurs win something soon but I have to agree with SB, I would imagine that the remit given to Poch from the owners is Champions League first, its where the big money is.

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 23/09/2018 at 11:54 am

Get that Elyid but it’s also about glory. Man can not live on money alone.

      • Fatty B 23/09/2018 at 12:00 pm

This man could. Given half a chance.

      • Sexy Beast 23/09/2018 at 12:05 pm

In the last 20 years the domestic cups have been hoovered up mostly by the Champions League teams, we on the other hand have not had a Champions league sized squad, only now are we starting to look a bit better in terms of squad depth but still imo are just a couple of quality additions below the depth of say Manure and Liverpool, Citeh’s squad is ridiculous, Chelsea still have a UCL size squad. Arsenal are now an irrelevance through 6/7 years of almost criminal mismanagement, however they still have a lot of financial power compared to us so we need to keep an eye on there progress under Dick Emery.

  • Superspoz 🏆 23/09/2018 at 12:01 pm

I hear you Sexy, but…I have a crush on the FA Cup.

    • Sexy Beast 23/09/2018 at 12:07 pm

How do you think it would play out if we won the Cup in May after finishing 5th and Real come for Eriksen the following week?

      • Superspoz 🏆 23/09/2018 at 12:11 pm

He’s a high calibre player. He’d want to join them.. Its all hypothetical obviously but we need silverware and a top four finish this season or I can see th likes of Erikssen leaving.

        • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 12:15 pm

A reason why (for me) this summers non investment in the team is concerning.

          • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 23/09/2018 at 12:26 pm

As much as may have been said otherwise I think the new stadium had an effect this summer and may in Jan. Thereafter I can’t see any excuses for it too happen again.

            • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 12:34 pm

I don’t see how, but if that is the case then it could cause negative repercussions further down the line.

              • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 23/09/2018 at 12:39 pm

Levy is a business man Cas, unless you’ve got unlimited money most that are completely focused on a particular project will not have time or money to spend on a holiday while it’s happening, if you get my analogy.

          • Superspoz 🏆 23/09/2018 at 12:30 pm

I agree and I hope our bottoms stay free of teeth marks.

    Fortress Tottenham!!! Love it!!!
As long as our team don’t play like blancmanges, Sexy, we have a chance.

Just watching the game now 40 minutes in . We are looking much better.Maybe it’s the fact that we are not getting pressed all over the park.
Rose looks back to his old self.. We needed that

    • Sexy Beast 23/09/2018 at 12:09 pm

We never became a bad side Ronnie, just a blip which we are currently turning around.
I still fancy us to pip Liverpool for 2nd but cannot see us above Citeh.

      • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:12 pm

Difficult one. Liverpool are playing cracking footie.
        They might win the league.

        • Sexy Beast 23/09/2018 at 12:20 pm

Your getting caught up in the hype, they have improved no doubt but they simply cannot bridge the gap between them and Citeh with a new goalie, Kieta, some CM who hasn’t kicked a ball yet and some fat lazy bloke who got relegated last May.
Mark my words, Chelsea will do em next week.

          • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:22 pm

I’ve seen good footie with my own eyes. Fast paced dynamic footie.

  • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:11 pm

About the cups.. I couldn’t care what it is, I only care that we play well. Good footie will get results. We have enough players now to play in different competitions. We need to make sure every game we arrive with confidence and belief we can win.

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 23/09/2018 at 12:24 pm

I get about 70% of my enjoyment in supporting Spurs in individual matches, how we play, the goals we score, the players abilities. The other 30% is about winning cups, important but not critical overall. But that’s just a personal feeling. The players on the other hand will have winning stuff at least as important as the money they’re earning. They want something to look at in their palacial mansions in their dotage. They won’t likely be thinking about individual goals or performances I wouldn’t have thought.

      • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:27 pm

I agree… I want to see a team who fights every game.. I think this picking which tournament to do well in screws up the emotional momentum a team has

      • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 12:29 pm

For me it’s the journey to winning something with the tension and excitement of each subsequent round being notched up, that makes the winning of silverware so memorable.

        • Superspoz 🏆 23/09/2018 at 12:33 pm

          Bang on.

        • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:34 pm

          But at what cost?
Not being excited about the league?

          • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 12:50 pm

The league is a competition with 38 rounds, so not that different really.

            • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:52 pm

              What does that mean Cas?

              • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 12:57 pm

The league is a competition just like the others, you just play more games.

                • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 1:00 pm

This is true Cas. So it all means something. Playing vibrant footie every game is important. Approaching every game with positivity and fight is important. We have enough players now

Lucas Moura is already the best signing we didn’t make this offseason

      • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:56 pm

This is true. He has been fantastic and with Rose back at top form it will strengthen us no end.
Dembele is getting back again to the way he was

      • Sexy Beast 23/09/2018 at 12:59 pm

New signings take six months to get the gig, hence Pooch being berry calm when the window shut, he saw Rose improving, Lucas firing, Lamela back to his old self. These three like new signings to the squad…
Aurier even had a super game on Tuesday!
        Wait a min……….Panic over!

      • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 12:57 pm

He looked dynamic in this game, trimmer, faster and head in the right place..

        • GDawg 23/09/2018 at 1:00 pm

You made an excellent point earlier Ron(?), we didn’t get bad overnight. Other teams have shot out of the gate, our boys have been a little flat in comparison. But the league is a marathon not a sprint, and there will be plenty of time for teams such as the bindippers to get bogged down and drop points to bus parkers, as per usual

          • Ronwol196061 23/09/2018 at 1:05 pm

I think that they all need a rest, in order to maintain the momentum. There’s a lot of pressure on the squad, with the amount of fixtures that are coming up, there is a need for rotation of players in order to stay up to speed. Especially with League, European Cup and Carabou Cup.
We still haven’t got a home venue, other than Wembley.

  • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 23/09/2018 at 2:40 pm

I cant say enough about Rose. he looked totally his old self.
In this one Dembele and Dier looked more in control and Tobt and Verts were fantastic.I think we should rest Kane for a game or two and play with all the others Eriksen,Moura,Dele,Son and Lamela could take over the job

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 23/09/2018 at 2:45 pm

Agree Ron, Rose made a couple of mistakes and was at fault for their goal but I thought the pluses mutch a outweighed the minuses.

I’d love to win a pot if only to shut up all the football experts(wank stains) who bleat on and on about the fact we have’nt for some time and Poch not being a winner as …..etc.But top 4 says so much more about the direction the club is heading imo.

Yes, but he’s on loan to the Chavs for the season. Plus he’s playing well for them.

      • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 7:12 pm

I reckon he was the one obvious addition who would have improved us this season. If Ron and I could see it, you’d hope the ‘transfer committee’ might have seen it too. I just don’t think there was a budget to stretch to buying him. Really sad he went to Chelsea to let Real have Courtois. Class player missed.

        • 89Spurs 👁 23/09/2018 at 7:15 pm

What’s the chance of a January transfer ?

          • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 7:18 pm

            To us? Nil.

            • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 7:21 pm

I should add I reckon January we will be trying for Grealish. By then Villa will have just 2 months to meet their FFP deadline and the new owners will have to sell. Plus by then Villa will be far away from the play off places and that fantasy will be over too.

              • 89Spurs 👁 23/09/2018 at 7:24 pm

I would prefer Zaha. Far better player.

                • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 7:27 pm

(Scratches head). Apples and oranges, a winger/forward is of less importance than a central midfielder to come in to fill the gap that will be left by Dembele in the summer. Priorities.

                  • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 7:28 pm

And Lucas Moura showed that a January buy means they will be totally ready for the next season. Best pre season there is.

                    • 89Spurs 👁 23/09/2018 at 7:34 pm

I’m sure that MoPo knows where the defections are in the team, and attempt to repair the flaws.

                    • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 7:40 pm

Central midfield is the engine room. It’s the area in the team which is most debateable for us. Will Winks and Wanyama get back to where they were? Can Dier cut out the risky square passes in the opening minutes? Will a youngster make the grade and save us a bundle?

                    • Fatty B 23/09/2018 at 8:06 pm

Is Will Winks better than his brother Harry?

              • Sexy Beast 23/09/2018 at 8:33 pm

I was reading earlier that Villa wanna sign him up with a £60m buy out clause…..
We have Lucas who cost £25m whilst Zaha would have been closer to £60m and commanded a big salary which would upset salary applecart. I don’t know how all fall for it every transfer window….

Top four isn’t that out of reach, not when you consider we are up against Arse (home and away win) and Yanited (whom we will beat at home). I think it’s actually on the cards.

  • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 6:26 pm

Everton are no better than last season. Still no clue.

  • Matt 23/09/2018 at 7:30 pm

Gotta be top 4. You simply don’t get the players otherwise. Look at Arse. Would Harry et al have signed extensions without CL? Doubt it. Some people saw a different Rose to me; I thought his defending was very poor.

    • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 7:35 pm

I’m not convinced. Defenders have to defend for 90 plus stoppage at the top level. If he had a brain in his head he would have calmed the bombing forward in the final few minutes (wasn’t required was it?) and not slipped on his arse trying to get back to let them score. Judgement is poor.

    • Fatty B 23/09/2018 at 8:09 pm

Kane’s awful miss and our absent midfield are as responsible for Brighton’s goal. Certainly not just Rose.

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 23/09/2018 at 8:13 pm

I thought he showed more pace than he has,he looks trimmed down a bit more and fitter and he worked his arse off all game. Think he is well on track. His timing is much better. Rose number 1 LB for me

  • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 7:54 pm

I reckon he was the one obvious addition who would have improved us this season. If Ron and I could see it, you’d hope the ‘transfer committee’ might have seen it too. I just don’t think there was a budget to stretch to buying him. Really sad he went to Chelsea to let Real have Courtois. Class player missed.

A few of things to consider:
    1) RM were asking for far more that he is worth £70m, therefor no club (including citeh) decided to pursue the idea of signing Kovacic.
    2) Kovacic was clearly part of the deal which allowed RM to sign Courtios from Chelsea, so it’s even more unlikely they were seriously prepared to sell him and jeopardise any chance of signing him.
    3) Kovacic is seen by RM as the natural successor to Modric (things may change), so it’s not surprising that he’s only on a season long loan, with Modric’s age it makes sense to give Kovacic playing time until Modric makes way.

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 23/09/2018 at 8:08 pm

Kovacic is no Modric, different style. Kovacic is foremost defensive but can expand well.He would be great at Tottenham.Almost a Mackay type.
We need that. A Dembele replacement but we do have to get the creative sorted. Eriksen needs to take more control of the park creatively.
Maybe a deal with Kovacic plus cash for Eriksen would leave us with players to sell and could buy two good creative types at least one a take charge player.
Just ideas mates.Dont panic.player. Maybe start with Grealish and add one more.

      Just ideas chaps dont Pjanic!!!

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 23/09/2018 at 8:10 pm

I would go for Grealish as one of them
and maybe another top player sort. Would like to See ERiksen grow more.He did play well yesterday by the way

        • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 23/09/2018 at 8:21 pm

I watched him play for RM and mostly he was very central and more between where say Dembele was and the DM

      • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 8:14 pm

That’s not an accurate assessment of Kovacic, he played as a number 10 whilst as Inter, and is far more versatile than just a holding midfielder.

        • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 23/09/2018 at 8:25 pm

The key is Cas is how creative is he? Im not sure but I can see he has very strong tackling ability and spreading the ball as well. Its right for the DM or CM to me
For a bit further forward Id like to see take charge creativity. Grealish although one footed (he seems to be) seems to take charge of the processdings.
I liked Malcom and also NDombele too

      • Caspurs 23/09/2018 at 8:20 pm

If Chelsea do buy him, RM know he would have played a season of football with them, which will inflate his price to that which RM would want i.e. £60/70+m.
RM don’t do anything that isn’t of benefit to them, plus I shudder to think what conditions RM would have asked for if we did/were to buy Kovacic, a big reason why I wouldn’t be a fan of Spurs doing business with that lot.

  • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 8:15 pm

Of course, what’s changed in the last 20 years or so is that whereas a club could once have a tilt at a domestic cup run and also the league (the famed domestic double), that has now been replaced by having a tilt at a European trophy (Europa or CL) plus the league. So Spurs will have a crack at silverware, just not the League or FA Cup. They have slipped to third and fourth priorities. If Spurs dropped completely out of the European trophies this season by finishing fourth and out in our CL group, then suddenly the match load on our squad would diminish and Pochettino would look on the other cups with more interest, in my opinion.

      • Chauvelin 23/09/2018 at 9:07 pm

Really? For starters we had Wimbledon, Newport and Rochdale, the latter two we struggled against. Then, AFTER losing to Inventus and going out of the CL, we made a decent fist of the FA Cup. If we’d beaten Juve, maybe Poch wouldn’t have made any effort.

Those of us lucky enough to have Sky Sports Main event on are witnessing one of the great sporting comebacks in our time, Tiger Woods who a couple of years ago feared that he wouldn’t be able to walk again let alone ever play golf again is 5 shots clear of the field starting the back nine in the Tour Championship. With his current rate of progress this year i fully expect him to win a major next year 11 years after his last and that would be remarkable.

About the set up we have I wouldnt mind seeing both Eriksen and Moura playing the AM Role and both attacking the goal where one goes forward the other holds back and vice versa. This article isnt about that but its talking about Kanes involvement and how it affected Moura. Both Moura and Eriksen are capable of scoring, they are also good ball players who I think could create.
We can put Moura on the wing but really I think Trippier and Rose (he is def getting better) will be the wing backs and the room gets squeezed and we need an inside game

Just had a butchers at the Marcus Edwards highlights.
    Here are my thoughts:
    – Exellent close control.
    – Very quick feet.
    – Very good dribbling
    – Even when running at speed he is constantly looking up.

Here’s the thing.. I could be talking about Ryan Sessegnon in the championship.
The prem is a different animal.

All the talent in the world means nothing unless you’ve got application to go with it. Taraabt is a fine example of this genre. Unless he can learn when to release and when to try something and when to assist the defence he’ll just be a wannabe. Not putting my house on it.

      • Superspoz 🏆 24/09/2018 at 12:51 pm

Agreed, but I will give credit to him for coming out of his comfort zone. Hopefully this is the start of something positive.

        • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 24/09/2018 at 12:55 pm

Yep although not sure what other options were open to him. I’d certainly not give up on the lad yet and hope he makes a success of it whether it’s with Tottenham or else where. Otherwise seems such a waste of talent which other players would kill to have.

        • UnkleTaff 24/09/2018 at 1:00 pm

Anyone who’s actually bothered to take the time to watch him play will know what a talent he is. The amount of shit he’s had thrown at him by supporters of his own club (based on little more than hearsay) is disgusting.

          • Chauvelin 24/09/2018 at 1:08 pm

“He has authority and behavioural problems,” Pochettino admitted at the beginning of this season, in his ghostwritten book A Brave New World. “There was a time when it would have been seen as impossible for him to play professionally, let alone make it in the Premier League. He has no shortage of talent, but there are gaps to be filled: he has to learn to score ugly, run more and be committed.”

            Poch out!

          • foeorfreund 24/09/2018 at 1:17 pm

Can’t agree with that Unk. We can only go on what Poch and the Norwich manager have said about him, and neither have been complimentary regarding his attitude, especially Farke who gave quite detailed criticism, not hearsay. He’s a very lucky lad to have the talent he does, and there’s nothing more heartbreaking than wasted talent, which to date, seems to be the case.
An 18 year old lad with no responsibilities apart from his own penis, and he can’t get to training on time? Waster.

            • Elyid 24/09/2018 at 1:26 pm

it appears to me he has been given a number of opportunities by those around him, they are aware of his talent and they are trying to help the lad. The only one letting him down is himself? Only so much you can do to help him, fingers crossed he takes note of the advise he is being given, if not then the future is bleak and an opportunity wasted.

I see Grealish signed a new 5 year contract. So that’s him out of the reckoning. Be interested to see how the new owners manage to meet Villa’s FFP deadline in March, because Levy won’t be meeting a probable new 50 million pound buy out clause in January. The new owners put in an extra 11 million in September, somehow.

        • Chauvelin 24/09/2018 at 5:27 pm

I think Grealish has been very badly advised. When his contract ran down he could have easily moved to Spurs or another PL club.

Pay up £40-£45 in January, job done. I can see him really avin it at Spurs. Real quality in the right hands. Someone to take it through the middle. Take on 1,2,3. We are missing that. His finishing is quite off so although he can play the AM role he’s much more suited to CM for me. From a DM role he’d be superb.

Is it likely? I don’t think it’ll happen in January, until Daniel has refinanced the stadium costs and knows the revenue available for players: that can’t happen until completion and the final bill is delivered, and that will beyond the January window. The ground may be open for games by New Year but not likely to be fully finished.

      • Flat Oeuf 25/09/2018 at 10:08 am

Being realistic with what’s likely, I’d be happy for us to go after another Moura-type bargain this January. Someone proven with CL experience but who is on the fringes of Real/Barça/Juve/PSG. A game-changer in CM.
