Scrap Heap Challenge

After reading recent comments I decided it was time to peruse the Exchange and Mart to see whether it was time to trade in our prized vintage Daimler, or is it a knackered broken down Trabant, I’m really not sure. So, I decided a closer examination of our Tobes service history was in order.

So what exactly is it we have in the garage? The refined furnishings that can only be found in a luxury vintage automobile that continues to appreciate in value? Or, maybe it really is an unreliable scrapper with one working door, broken springs, and a bonnet that’s rarely closed?

It would seem the populous are somewhat divided when it comes to our Tobes. Has he run his race, behaved like a scoundrel, or has he remained professional throughout, ready to now to perform as he has in the past, with distinction?

Injuries have been cited as one reason to upgrade, he’s injury prone, has a dodgy hammy, it won’t get better because he’s too old. Personally I’m not too sure, I don’t hear the same things said about Vert’s, he’s two years older than Tobes and looks as good, if not better than ever. Before last season’s hammytastrophe, (and let’s be fair a bad injury can happen to any player), Tobes injury record was better than our Vert’s. Since signing in 2015 Tobes had only missed 9 games, whereas Vert’s had missed 16. So what about our Tobes, is he a true disciple of the Hammy house of Horrors, can we expect more gory tales from the physio room? According to, Tobes has only had one bad hammy prior to last season (2014/15), which put him out of action for 6 weeks.

I know Sanchez will be an excellent defender, but I’m not sure he’s quite the finished article yet, Tobes I believe still has much to offer, both for the team and in helping Sanchez to realise his potential. Last season we conceded more goals (36) than the year before (26), I appreciate stats don’t tell the whole story, but when Tobes and Vert’s play together I feel they read the game better, and spot potential danger earlier. Since Tobes arrival, Spurs have averaged 2.1 points per game, and only conceded an average of 0.82 goals per game.

Before last seasons injury and subsequent contract demands (the facts of which none of us are privy to), he was destined to go into the history books as a Spurs legend. Whatever dispute or falling out with Poch our Tobes had, I have never heard or read anything from Tobes other than support for the team, so if Poch is willing to clean the slate and start afresh then that’s good enough for me, you never know, maybe Tobes will have a change of heart and sign a new deal? I know I would certainly welcome news of that ilk.

    Good work, Cas.

  • Sniper 29/08/2018 at 8:28 am

    Good balanced post Cas.
I saw a stat that gave us more points with Sanchez/Verts than with Toby/Verts. But we do seem solid with Toby at the back.
We don’t know what the beef is between Poch and Toby, or the club and Toby. We don’t know the real figures for his contract or demands either.
All I know is; I trust Poch before I trust players!

    • Caspurs 29/08/2018 at 8:40 am

Sanchez is fantastic, but can sometimes be a little impetuous when trying to win the ball back times. I think it’s just a case of experience, which Tobes has in abundance. It can only benefit Sanchez in the long run to learn his trade by watching how Tobes deals with certain situations.

    • Syd 🇦🇺 29/08/2018 at 9:23 am

      Thumbs up

  • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 29/08/2018 at 8:54 am

Nice one Cas I’m with you, Tobes is an asset and I don’t think we should get rid of him unless he starts playing up which I don’t expect to happen.

  • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 29/08/2018 at 8:57 am

Ledley was the epitome of injury prone but virtually no-one would have considered shipping him out. Tobes is at least Ledley’s equal and he proved that again on Monday. He merits a substantial new contract (not 180k though).

But for Rose’s poor display we may well have won more comfortably. I hope he gets his mojo back before he heads norf as he will likely cost us points with his brain fartery.

    • Sniper 29/08/2018 at 9:06 am

      At least Ledley’s equal?
      Give it a rest!

      • FT 29/08/2018 at 9:50 am

I mean, he is though. Ledders was ahead of his time, but even he couldn’t marshal things as smoothly and reliably as Tobes. The game moves on, and thankfully we have another defender of Ledley’s calibre!

      • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 29/08/2018 at 9:52 am

It’s set in stone now, I’m afraid.

        • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 10:08 am

You’re looking at this through the lens of Verts next to Toby. Ledley had to worry about a CB pairing with players like Gardiner. Imagine how good Ledley would have been next to Verts.

          Well done Cas.

          • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 29/08/2018 at 10:17 am

He’d have been about as good as Toby.

            • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 10:22 am

Ledley had great positional awareness. He basically had to do the work directing his partner as well. Toby is deffo more powerful and dominant.

              • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 10:25 am

I’d say Jan is Ledley’s closest match up.
The secret is Jan and Toby are a brilliantly matched duo. They work so well together.

    • Syd 🇦🇺 29/08/2018 at 9:26 am

I am one of the minority who probably believe Toby is right up there with King Kedley. Rose played a shocker and looks so annoyed all the time. I wish I had a dollar for every time he kicked a ball into an opposing player. Still if he keeps playing, this is our best chance of getting the old Danny back but I preface that by saying he appears to be a bomb waiting to explode.

  • Syd 🇦🇺 29/08/2018 at 9:17 am

Cas, thank you for setting the record straight. Great article.
Toby is NOT crocked, has acted professionally and as you say we have not heard a whinge out of him in contradiction to other peoples ramblings. He wants a pay rise, who can blame him.
There is no doubt he deserves a pay rise and if for some reason Spurs are not willing to meet his demands then bless him, send him along with our greatest thanks and take the 25mill in a years time (which I believe will be a good price for a 30 year old). I think this is fair for all concerned. He has been a terrific player and loyal soldier for the THFC.
However, all top line competitive teams have more than one very good player for each position and to have Toby, Vert’s and Sanchez we stand in good stead with the likes of Man C in that position at least.

Nice bloeug Cas, I say keep him if we can (not for a kings ransom though) but rotate the three of them week in, week out and keep them all as fresh as is possible, bring in Foyth for cup games and the odd Huddersfield\Cardiff match and this should help avoid strain type injuries which older players tend to pick up.

    • Syd 🇦🇺 29/08/2018 at 9:27 am

100%. I actually think Foyth could be trusted now and should be used similar to Davinson.

      • Hartley 29/08/2018 at 9:31 am

        He probably could Syd.

        • Sniper 29/08/2018 at 10:43 am

Salient point there Harts. We have FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Champions League, PL. If we intend progressing in these to latter stages we will need all hands to the pump

  • Flat Oeuf 29/08/2018 at 10:44 am

I love Toby as a player. No doubt that season before last was legendary in defensive terms. If we can get back to that, we’ve got a shot at the title. Unfortunately, comparing last season with the one before is difficult as there are quite a few variables: 3 at the back; Walker/Rose in form; Davinson first season; Wanyama imperious, then injured.

Toby looks like he’s playing back into some real form. I only watched the game once and have seen no stats, but from what I saw he had a fantastic second half bu made some uncharacteristic errors in the first…again, many variables including how good they were/poor we were in the first 45 mins.

I have talked about the injury thing before. He’s not ‘injury-prone’, but he’s missed 29; 9; 10 games in the last 3 seasons (2 of these hamstrings). It’s a consideration, that’s all.

Having said that, I so hope he does sign another contract. Thinks he’s great to have in the dressing room and, more importantly, on the pitch.

  • DAVID 29/08/2018 at 10:52 am

If Toby and Rose are back in the fold and Poch can get Rose back in to shape and form, I’d say only City and arguably Liverpool are stronger than us.
We’ve struggled in the past in away fixtures against the other top sides, we’ve now won at Chelsea, ManU and drawn at Anfield, belief is what we needed and looks like it’s been found.

  • Sniper 29/08/2018 at 10:53 am

If you’re on Syd, I hope you’re watching Lions FC v Adelaide United in the FFA Cup (Aussie FA Cup) live on Sky.
It’s classic. You can hear the players shouting at each other because the ‘crowd’ are silent, the pitch is pretty rugged and the footy old school amateur cup tie stuff.

    • Syd 29/08/2018 at 12:19 pm

Lol, just turned it on mate..very rough pitch

  • DAVID 29/08/2018 at 10:55 am

Can anyone clarify, now Moura has gone from being crap to great, does that mean he’s now a Poch pick rather than a Levy imposition.

    • Sniper 29/08/2018 at 11:00 am

Apparently it was our scout, whom Poch credited after the win

      • Flat Oeuf 29/08/2018 at 11:11 am

Does anyone know how the bonuses work at Hotspur Way? I read that Tobes is on £50k a week, plus bonuses. The former seems to be an insulting amount, but what might he be earning with the extras?

Well I read recently that Eriksen was getting up to 25k in bonuses. Presumably each player has a different scheme? I think I remember that at one time Lloris was on an 8k clean sheet bonus.

    • Syd 29/08/2018 at 11:33 am

The bonus’ differ from player to player depending on the terms agreed at the time of signing the contract. there are bonus’s for different things, games played, make CL, make UCL, Win title, win trophy etc etc, it will generally the percentage or amount of the bonus which will differ. You may never know what each player is on (inclusive of bonus’s without seeing the contract).

Yes, that’s right — I have a favourite punctuation mark.

            • Northern Spur 29/08/2018 at 11:51 am

I’m using the semi-colon far more often than in the past. However, I’m not entirely sure I’m consistent when using it instead of a comma.

I am not a lover of the four-dot ellipsis. The point has been made by the the third dot; the fourth seems superfluous to me.

Whereas two just looks like an error (as in one full stop too many).

I thought an ellipsis should only have three dots?

                    • UnkleTaff 29/08/2018 at 12:10 pm

I think that Americans tend to add a fourth dot when the ellipsis appears at the end of a sentence. So technically you could argue it does only contain three dots and the fourth is the ‘period’.

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….” always annoys me whenever I watch Star Wars.

                    • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 12:16 pm

              • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 12:04 pm

A semi colon is used to separate two clauses within a sentence.
Now you’re going to ask …

A word of praise must also go to Pochettino for having the courage to stand by Lloris in light of recent events. It would have been easy for him to drop him and strip him of the captaincy but, presumably having heard Hugo’s side of the story, he decided it was a minor infringement that was out of character and not worth making an issue of.

Lloris then rewarded that faith with an excellent performance.

    • Syd 29/08/2018 at 11:36 am

Good stuff Cas. Im sorry but I was first with the wheel.
Toby is about as solid as they come. He put the safe in safe. He is known for not being spectalcular but for being solid and although his terrible injury put him back a bit I think we feel more secure with him.
Sanchez can surely become truly one of the greats. But he isnt yet. His marking would have to get better. Its about making judgements and yes he has that great tackle and he is super in the air but sometimes his positioning is a bit iffy, either to standing too close to the attacker where he is not on goal side (the decison to whether he plays him offside or goes to mark him is in doubt) but…..really he could be great if he starts to get it right. Toby around him.

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 12:46 pm

I missed the bit at the end. Its that Poch has the luxury to play 3 or 2 CBs. And Sanchez always looks comfortable with Verts and Toby around him. That way he can learn on the job

  • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 12:51 pm

From a site called Give me Sport
Its in a book Ferguson wrote and about Moura

United ended up losing out to PSG and after watching Moura tear his old club to shreds, Ferguson might just regret not signing him.

“Right towards the end of my time at United we were pursuing Lucas Moura, the immensely talented right winger who, at the time, was playing in his native Brazil for Sao Paulo,” wrote the 76-year-old.

“We offered £24m for him, which was upped to £30m and again to £35m, but PSG signed him for £45m. David Gill and I were just not prepared to go to those sorts of levels.”

It was six years ago that Sir Alex tried to sign Moura and now he’s playing for Tottenham and scoring match winners against United. Funny how things work out.

    • UnkleTaff 29/08/2018 at 12:54 pm

The commentator on the stream I was watching said that Moura had the opportunity to move to Utd last year but turned them down and came to us instead.

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 1:02 pm

With him beginning to get stuck in as Poch wants him to,maybe he believed he could make it with us,in our system. He is beginning to find chemistry with Eriksen and Kane and can find the lanes inside or out to drive to goal. He has pace but more important he runs fast with the ball. What Levy and Poch has done is given them all the opportunity to grow within the system. If they are positive its creates chemistry

  • UnkleTaff 29/08/2018 at 1:00 pm

      • UnkleTaff 29/08/2018 at 1:37 pm

You just can’t argue with that level of stattage.

  • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 1:05 pm

Picking up on Ron’s point above, Moura played with Kane the way I reckon Southgate hoped Sterling would combine with Kane at the World Cup. The difference appears to be Moura actually has a footballing brain and didn’t just wander about.

    • GDawg 29/08/2018 at 1:46 pm

And Moura isn’t a dirty hungus bastard. In addition, nothing I saw from Jesse Lingaard indicated to me that he is anything other than what I thought of him at the WC. Not bad at getting into positions, average crossing delivery, can’t shoot for shit

      • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 2:06 pm

No place for Rashford though. Mourinho seems to do it deliberately, won’t give a talented striker a chance and keeps playing a lump up front that he lavished 75 million quid on, as he can never back down and say he made a mistake.

        • GDawg 29/08/2018 at 2:16 pm

  • OTS84 29/08/2018 at 1:53 pm

IMO at the back end of last season when Toby was supposedly dropped the media and posters on blogs made a mountain out of a mole hill. I suspect because of the story about Walker in Pochettino’s book people assumed the same thing was happening to Toby. However when Toby did play he looked totally off the pace and Sanchez was playing well and Spurs were winning games. I am sure Tony was fit (just as he kept saying) but he wasn’t match fit. In one of the games he played he looked significantly worse than Foyth and certainly not ready for the first team.
Now he looks ready and as assured as ever and he is back in the team.
I don’t have a crystal ball but I think there is a good chance he will extend with us and if he doesn’t and he goes for 25m next summer so be it.

    • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 2:08 pm

Toby got match fit at the World Cup and credit to him, stayed fit ready for pre season.

One thing I a concerned about is that we really have got to start taking control of a game quicker. We seem to wait to see what the other team will do and then react. We were a bit hodge podge for a good bit of the first half against United. We could have found ourselves 2-0 down. Arriving awake would help

    • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 2:21 pm

I’m hoping it’s a Mourinho thing. They wouldn’t have known if they faced a parked bus tactic/counter attack from the Special One, or a storm force 10. They did seem to be feeling their way into the match.

Liverpool at home is going to be massive.

      • GDawg 29/08/2018 at 2:30 pm

They like to press us which is a challenge. In Moura we might have a real game breaker. Excellent pace, good ball control, and now assured finishing. Not bad for a guy deemed by other sites as being a busted flush

        • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 2:42 pm

  • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 2:47 pm

Whether Winks or someone else takes over Dembeles job it would be a great to see some creativity and strength coming from that role. Set the hordes of forwards off in fine fashion and help out the DM too

    • OTS84 29/08/2018 at 3:09 pm

I think Winks has the creativity. Last season he was always looking to move the ball forward.
At this year’s wold cup I was surprised ( shouldn’t have been) by how well Modric did defensively even though he played higher up the field for Croatia than I remember him doing for Spurs. Anyway I kinda hope Winks develops just like that.
I heard somewhere Poch saying he was showing Winks videos of Inesta to get him playing the same way. I never saw a lot of him but his record is outstanding so here’s hoping.

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 3:16 pm

For me Im happy whoever takes that role and makes a good job of it.
Its a very difficult position and thats why there isnt so many players in the world than are really great at it. They are difficult to buy and expensive. It an area of control not simply facilitation. If we get this one right, whoever plays it,we will be top winners

    • elyid 29/08/2018 at 3:09 pm

Maybe a tad controversial for a newcomer but I quite like the idea of Lamela in that role

      • OTS84 29/08/2018 at 3:12 pm

Others on here have mentioned that. Made me think and it could be a good position for him. He gets stuck in and has energy and creativity but I wonder if he might be a bit to reckless and pick up too many yellows.

        • Fat Bertha 29/08/2018 at 3:15 pm

I think Lamela is best in an attacking free role behind HK.

        • elyid 29/08/2018 at 3:17 pm

Possibly but given how good Poch is with these guys could he be encouraged to channel that aggression? He certainly has the energy and the ability, be great to see him driving forward with the ball feeding Moura?

          • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 3:18 pm

In the CM role control is the most important. Its a key role. Yes Lamela,Dele,Eriksen.Winks can play there and succeed but to tick all the boxes is not easy.
            Welcome Elyid!

Lamela is great driving forward right and is great at pressing but does he have control?

Can Dele mature enough to play the role? He is getting more serious now

Eriksen has great control but is he strong enough to also battle strog midfielders on the other side?

Winks? Does he ultimately have the quality. Creativity+Strength. We know he would probably be the most dependable

            • elyid 29/08/2018 at 3:23 pm

I just think that Lamela is a great ball carrier and sometimes to break down the lines of defence this is what we need, not always the space to thread a telling pass?

              • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 3:25 pm

Thats true but thats not enough. We have Moura,Eriksen and Dele that can do that too.Its also about control. Being in the middle, having some presence and guiding the play as well as some defensive capability

                • elyid 29/08/2018 at 3:30 pm

I think that defensive capability is there, he can be a real terrier further up the pitch so why not drop him deeper, break up the play then carry the ball forward? I guess it is all just theories

                  • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 3:34 pm

Yes he can do that but also sometimes he can lose the ball, thats my worry. Its fine when its further up the field but in the CM position its deadly

                    • Elyid 29/08/2018 at 3:37 pm

That is where Poch comes in, he did a fine job changing Dier’s role why not Lamela?

                    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 29/08/2018 at 3:52 pm

Yes,its all doable. But Poch would have to work at it in the smaller games. Its possible for any of them to work into that role but I guess he would definately try Winks first and not just once.

Are you the blogger currently known as DML?

Apologies: I need to get used to the new format. No. I am just a poster on DML. Not that talented I’m afraid.

I used to be pretty well known to several of the posters here when they were posting to the Harry Notspur site, but that was under a different username. I gave up posting there when the site became more about Notspur than it did about Spurs.

    • Elyid 29/08/2018 at 3:43 pm

Similar story for me JP, although I never posted I used to enjoy the banter, used to sit on the terrace with a beer and have a quiet chuckle to myself. Now it is just dire doom and gloom.

  • John Peddubriwny 29/08/2018 at 4:16 pm

He ‘only’ cost 25 million so was deemed rubbish from his arrival.

That explains why we did so badly at the WC. The entire Spurs/England contingent only cost £14 mill.

I think we were still over the limit. He didn’t have a number last year as he was on loan.
Has GKN gone on loan again?

            • UnkleTaff 29/08/2018 at 5:18 pm

I can’t remember if we need to get rid of one or two.

I do know that Ben Davies qualifies as homegrown for the Premier League but as an overseas player for the Champions League, so someone else will have to miss out in Europe.

Someone made an excellent point on here the other week that both our second- and third-choice goalkeepers are overseas players and are therefore taking up two valuable ‘overseas’ slots. You would like to think that at least one of those ‘keepers should be home grown (given how little they are going to feature over the course of a season).

How we all laughed when Chelsea signed Rob Green … but it turns out that was actually a pretty shrewd move considering.

  • John Peddubriwny 29/08/2018 at 5:24 pm

Hi DML newcomers. Care to reveal your previous names on the Notspur blog as someone called it to see if anyone remembers you? If you still use that user name on said blog and he sees you posting here you will get banned from his site.

Notspur was trolling DML last week and claimed that I had tried to post three times but he had blocked me on each occasion and that I had never posted on his sites.

Not worried about being banned by him, as it must be at least four years since I posted there. I think being banned by him is the equivalent of the gov banning me from paying income tax. OTOH, I freely admit that I wasn’t always the best behaved of posters and on reflection, there may be those who remember me (Ronwol and Bruxie spring to mind) that might think I’ve brought old baggage with me. I promise I have not.

Anyway, I was often replied to as “SOID”, being an acronym for my then username. Let’s see if that prompts any memories, happy or otherwise?

I read somewhere that free agents could still sign.
I think we are over our non home grown limit so one in one out would not help.

AS things stand at the moment, it looks like we will only be able to register 22 players (aged over 21) for the CL as UEFA consider both Davies and Dier as imports and 24 such players for our PL squad. I think you are right about “free agents”. It would not make sense for a club to be allowed to sign a free agent, but the player was then banned from competing, ad you are also right, that if he signs, he can only play by displacing another import.

Anyone else a bit put off by today’s headlines about Son? They’re all a variation of ‘Tottenham’s Son one win away from avoiding military service.’

While that is likely a factor, he is also captaining his country in an international tournament that he wants to win. Seems overly cynical to me.

    • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 7:41 pm

I have mixed feelings about this. Forcing people to give up two years of their life seems over the top. Doesn’t apply to apply to women I believe. Despite that it seems unfair a millionaire footballer can escape the draft just because they are in a team that wins a tournament. I wouldn’t want my sons to be press ganged into doing National Service.

I done 2 years national service, I was 18 when I joined (super long story) at the time, I hated it, how there they force an 18 year old to join the army. I could of been out partying and getting wasted. I know think it was the best thing I ever did for many many reasons.

        • UnkleTaff 29/08/2018 at 7:49 pm

I, obviously, have never done national service (and would have been fervently against it had I been asked to do so at the time) but with the benefit of hindsight I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world that could have happened to me.

    • Elyid 29/08/2018 at 7:41 pm

It’s somewhat typical of a lot of what is written these days, always missing the real story. You have to admire the lads commitment regardless of who he is playing for, he just seems so humble Andy grateful to Ben there.

  • Caspurs 29/08/2018 at 7:40 pm

A big welcome to Elyid and John Peddubriwny (I can’t even pronounce the second name 🧐), the more reprobates the better I say.
If anything is giving you chaps a brain itch, feel free to put it down in words, all guest bloeugs are most welcome. 👍

    • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 7:42 pm

My guest blog would be about three or four words a the most.

          • Caspurs 29/08/2018 at 7:50 pm

I don’t think just an ‘O’ will suffice, you may need to pad it out a tad more.

      • Caspurs 29/08/2018 at 7:44 pm

No probs, that’ll do, just make sure they’re VERY good words.

        • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 7:47 pm

I do have an O Level in English language. I know it’s hard to believe.

      • Fat Bertha 29/08/2018 at 7:46 pm

‘at’ not being one of them?

Sorry, I don’t follow. I can do Anglo Saxon if you like……

            • Fat Bertha 29/08/2018 at 7:59 pm

How many hands have you got?

              • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 8:00 pm

I’ll count them on my fingers. Yep, 2.

“John Peddubriwny”. If it helps, the “w” is pronounced as a “v”

      You wouldn’t have liked it.

    • Chauvelin 29/08/2018 at 7:46 pm

On Monday, Dembele really improved as the game went on. I was impressed.

      • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 7:47 pm

        They all did.

I think Dele was consistent during the match. Kane too.

          • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 7:53 pm

Kane – no goals first half. Kane – One goal second half. I think that he improved second half.

    • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 7:48 pm

My dad didn’t think it was. It interrupted his apprenticeship. He said all he learnt in the Army was how to skive.

      • Superspoz 🏆 29/08/2018 at 7:53 pm

Your dad was from an era when men were men, he probably didn’t need the army to learn basic things like discipline, respect and teamwork. Different times now.

        • stevo1987 29/08/2018 at 7:58 pm

My kids don’t need the Army to teach them that as they got it from their parents. 🙂

          • Superspoz 🏆 29/08/2018 at 8:01 pm

Your kids are lucky then (I think ;-))

Not everyone is like you though. Plenty of badly dragged up children around. Some children come into school and they can barely socialise; sitting still at a table to work or eat lunch with others is completely new to them.
