Pre-Match Blather

Pochettino has made a “technical decision” to omit defenders Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier from his side’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan.

relating to a particular subject, art, or craft, or its techniques.
“technical terms”
involving or concerned with applied and industrial sciences.
“an important technical achievement”
synonyms: practical, scientific, applied, applying science, non-theoretical; More
(in areas with guerrilla warfare) a small truck with a machine gun mounted on the back.
“the helicopters flew difficult night-time searches for technicals”

I’m assuming Poch isn’t referring to the noun in his description. Although on second thoughts it might be useful to bolster our leaky defence at dead ball situations.

In other news Dele Alli (hamstring) remains unavailable after missing Spurs’ defeat by Liverpool on Saturday, as does captain Hugo Lloris (thigh).

On the upside Moussa Sissoko (hamstring) is also absent for the match at the San Siro.

“You cannot bring 25 players and can only play 11,” said Pochettino.

“That is the reason. It was a technical decision. You can find it in the dictionary, maybe tactical also on the pitch – yes, it’s tactical too.”

Italian giants Inter Milan return to Champions League action following a six-year absence but suffered a 1-0 defeat by Parma on Saturday as their indifferent Serie A start continued.

Forward Mauro Icardi should return to Luciano Spalletti’s starting XI after the Argentine was a substitute in that match, but Danilo d’Ambrosio faces a late fitness test.

  • DAVID 18/09/2018 at 10:19 am

Very odd behaviour from Poch at yesterdays press conference, has he been taking lessons from Mourinho ?
His comments were also unfair to cows.#respecttodaisy.

It’s a Moo-t point. We’re still gonna smash ’em. I won’t accept any udder result.

        You’re milking it now Nut!

  • Elyid 18/09/2018 at 10:30 am

Maybe he is just fed up of cowtailing to the doubters

  • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 10:38 am

At least Alli’s absence makes it simpler to play Son and Lamela tonight. I might keep Son back as an impact substitute and play Eriksen Moura and Lamela behind Kane, although it’s also arguable to rest Harry and put Son up front. Wanyama and Dembele, flat back four, Aurier and Davies, Jan, Davinson. Gazzaniga please. Vorm needs to practice grabbing hold of a ball before his next game.

    • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 10:44 am

On the upside Dele is at least getting a bit of a break.

  • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 10:52 am

When was the second NFL game due to be played at the New WHL?

    • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 18/09/2018 at 10:59 am

I’m not sure a date was set for a second game this season. The deal was for “up to” 2 games a year iirc.

      • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 11:09 am

Was just musing there might be a chance the first competitive fixture at the New Destination could be an NFL game!!!

        • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 18/09/2018 at 11:29 am

          That would be hilarious.

          • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 11:39 am

I’m sure Daniel is hoping to get one NFL game on. The season ends in Feb I think.

  • Bruxie 18/09/2018 at 10:56 am

Champions League is the new “norm” for Spurs.
We have become a little more experienced in the balancing act with the PL and there’ll be decisions that will baffle a lot of people out there.
Playing away – with the prospect of getting a result whilst not being able (or choosing not) to play our strongest team – is a risk that may not go down too well if it all unravels.
If it does go awry then we still have five games to play. And that could be the thinking behind the choice of the travelling squad.

    Personally, I’ll be expecting a counter-attacking plan.
    Lamella, Lucas, Son and Kane.
    Eriksen, Dier, Dembele, Wanyama.
Back 4. Perm any four from five.
Not a bad squad to pick from.

0-2 to the mighty Spurs is my gut feeling.

    • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 11:01 am

25 man squad is exactly that. I’d even consider giving Llorente a game as the CL is more suited to the big guy than the frenetic Premier League.

      • Bruxie 18/09/2018 at 11:05 am

Speed is our strength. Our defensive midfielders slow the tempo down too much in my opinion.
Winks, Dembele, Dier. We cannot afford to play all three if we want to launch quick attacks.

        • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 11:08 am

What? We’ve been using Dier, Dembele, Wanyama and Winks for the past few seasons. How are they slowing us down now but not previously?

          • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 11:15 am

            Bring back Bentaleb and Holtby!

            Poch out!

          • Bruxie 18/09/2018 at 11:18 am

Not all at the same time!

            • McG ⚽⚽ 18/09/2018 at 12:41 pm

Exactly, you only need two of them at any given time. Play three or more & you lack creativety, ala dips.

              • Hartley 18/09/2018 at 12:49 pm

                …and they’ll slow you down.

  • Hartley 18/09/2018 at 11:40 am

“On the upside Moussa Sissoko (hamstring) is also absent for the match at the San Siro.”
    That is good news.

Match not being shown here in the states. We get ‘Pool instead. Pfft. As far as omitting Tripp’s and Toby, Poch’s call, both used heavily in the WC, perhaps rest needed. Besides Sanchez will do fine and Aurier will do his rampaging best.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 18/09/2018 at 12:43 pm

I think it’s a good call resting them both.

They will need rest, I hope Kane gets to come on for the last 25 minutes only if needed.

        Hey, no probs 🙂

  • Carrigbawn 18/09/2018 at 3:14 pm

Not surprised Trippier isn’t playing tonight. He looks good as a wing back in front of a back 3 formation, but in a back 4 and up against a fast, tricky winger (like Mane) his lack of pace is a big disadvantage. Harry Hotspur used to complain about Kyle Walker and his so called “brain farts”, but he was NEVER outpaced. No doubt the main reason why Pep Guardiola bought him (but then I suppose HH knows more about football than Guardiola! LOL). Also no doubt the reason that Southgate plays Walker on the right side of a back 3 when playing Trippier as a wing back (to cover for Trippier’s lack of pace).

Alderweireld? He’s a good centre half, but not the fastest. Also it was his very loose long ball forward hit straight at Firminio which was the first of the mistakes (Eriksen & then Vorm made the others) which led to the 1st Liverpool goal. Also he tried too many long balls forward against Liverpool which just gifted them possession. Another of his attacking ploys was to pass the ball to Trippier who then passed it straight back!

Fans are saying Eriksen has been poor for Spurs and is probably fatigued. True he has been poor for Spurs, but he was in scintillating form for Denmark a week ago. He scored a couple of excellent goals. Why can’t he play like that for Spurs? Is it that he’s get his heart set on a move? I wonder if the recent Real Madrid transfer talk unsettled him? He could double, or even triple, his money at RM. One couldn’t blame him for wanting to leave poor payers Spurs for such a moneybags club as RM.

    • Northern Spur 18/09/2018 at 3:31 pm

Eriksen flatters to deceive most of the time imho.

    • SeattleSpursGuy 18/09/2018 at 3:33 pm

The problem I saw with Tripps and Rose was they were playing in a back 4, but pushing forward as wingbacks. I’d imagine Dier was supposed to help out the CBs, but he was often out of position. When we lost the ball, which happened a lot, Pool were springing 3 attackers at Jan and Toby. A poor game plan made worse by lackluster performances.

      • DAVID 18/09/2018 at 3:46 pm

It was frightening the number of times during the game that their attackers outnumbered our defenders, we were lucky they failed to take advantage of those situations.
I couldn’t understand why we made no obvious tactical changes to stop that happening.

  • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 5:02 pm

One problem, I’m not convinced by Vorm and I doubt his team mates have 100% confidence in him. That affects the defence.

    • AntSpurs 18/09/2018 at 5:10 pm

I think the criticism of Vorm is a tad harsh. The first was his fault but the 2nd was quite unfortunate. He looked confident, made some decent saves , parrying to safety and positioned himself well on the back pass allowed me Salah through. Many keepers would have rushed out for that. Reserve judgement on him. I think he kept the score down.

  • UnkleTaff 18/09/2018 at 5:05 pm
