Palace match facts

Tottenham defender Ben Davies (groin) is out and midfielder Moussa Sissoko (knee) will have his fitness assessed after the pair were injured against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

Harry Kane and Dele Alli are injured, while Son Heung-min is unlikely to play – although South Korea were knocked out of the Asian Cup on Friday.

Crystal Palace’s new keeper Lucas Perri is expected to go into their squad.

Defender Pape Souare will miss out with a dislocated shoulder.

What the managers said

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson: “It’s nothing like the glittering prize it was in my youth because we have the Champions League and Europa League now. Not many have the ambition to win the FA Cup.

“The FA Cup is still being won by the top teams, and our position in the table [14th] isn’t as good as we’d like it to be.

“What is my ambition? To advance in the FA Cup and get to the semis or the final, or stay in the Premier League? My ambition is to stay in the Premier League.”

On whether Tottenham could sign anyone this month, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino: “Always, we’ll see. Still six days. We are working.

“(We have) a few options. We’ll see if we are capable of delivering, but in the same way of course we have the squad.”

MATCH FACTS

Crystal Palace and Spurs last met in the FA Cup in the fifth round in 2015-16, with Palace winning 1-0 at White Hart Lane on their way to reaching the final.

The last six matches between Crystal Palace and Spurs in all competitions have all ended 1-0 (five Spurs wins, one Palace win).

Since eliminating four Premier League teams on their way to the 2016 final, Crystal Palace have lost their last three FA Cup matches against top-flight opposition.

Spurs are looking to reach the FA Cup fifth round for a fourth consecutive season for the first time since doing so in five seasons in a row between 1978-79 and 1982-83.

Since winning the competition in 1991, 25 of the 27 teams to knock Spurs out of the FA Cup have been in the top-flight, with the exceptions Leicester City in 2005-06 and Leeds United in 2012-13.

When we were given the start sheet did anyone actually think we were going to win?

    • Chauvelin 27/01/2019 at 7:48 pm

I was disturbed to see Nkoudou there. Surely he isn’t part of Poch’s plans, and therefore should have been in the bench at best? Very odd.

      • Sexy Beast 27/01/2019 at 8:13 pm

Mishit his chance and then the rebound needed to aim at the roof of the net but straight at the keeper again. KWP might get away with left back in under 23 footy but not this level. Skippy looked like an 18 year old playing mans football. Foyth looks like he could step in for Toby if he goes in the summer, I think he is that good, still a rough diamond but a gem.
Lucas off the boil atm but with Llorente offering absolutely nothing in terms of movement and zero hold up play and Lamela not much better we were always struggling to create chances. Shame as Palace were crap but every cloud has a silver lining as we will have a ten day break before the Dortmund away game, if we can get a decent result at Wembley we can do em!

        • McG ⚽⚽ 27/01/2019 at 8:42 pm

Yes there is after the Dortmund home leg, I got it slightly wrong. 13th Feb BVD home
23 Feb Burnley away are the fixtures, that looks like a ten day gap between matches to me!

          About Skipp
Yes he looks young but his passes were quick and incise (yes of the many one or two didn’t get there but most did.)
He didn’t score or create a goal but he didn’t mess anything up either.
Relatively he was of our best players.
          Foyth by far was best.

    • Shelfy 27/01/2019 at 7:48 pm

Not when I saw theirs as well.
We had a tough game on Thursday. They had the week free.

Please tell me you’re joking? At best he’s a number two, in more ways than one!

    • SpurAndy πŸ₯§πŸ’ 27/01/2019 at 8:49 pm

If you think he’s never had a decent game for us or England then clearly in his current form he’s just performing slightly below his norm. If you think he has had good games for us and England then he’s probably just suffering a bout of poor form which might be as a consequence that he hasn’t had a proper break since the WC. I tend to think the latter so on that basis I’d be loathe to lose him at the moment particularly as neither Aurier or KWP are inspiring me with confidence.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 27/01/2019 at 8:52 pm

Andy, I’m more than happy with him as a squad player, just not as our no 1 right back.

        • SpurAndy πŸ₯§πŸ’ 27/01/2019 at 8:57 pm

If we still had Walker I’d agree but we have an out of form Trips who can’t defend atm, a potential penalty giver in Serge and a young kid who’s still trying to make his name. It’s still a close call for me.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 27/01/2019 at 9:07 pm

At the mo, I’d like to see Serge given a run, & think he’ll start on Wed. Not saying he’s the answer, but less of a liability right now.

            • SpurAndy πŸ₯§πŸ’ 27/01/2019 at 9:15 pm

Yep I think your right and Aurier will get the shirt. Hopefully it’ll be a more recognisable team with Son back as well.

          • Caspurs 27/01/2019 at 10:22 pm

Do you mean a close call for which player should make the bench?

  • McG ⚽⚽ 27/01/2019 at 8:50 pm

There’s a difference between throwing a match & prioritising a match, the players weren’t good enough today, Wednesday was prioritised, Poch’s interview makes this clear. If we’d had a fully fit squad & fielded today’s side I’d be well p*ssed, gotta accept it for what it was. We have both chavs & goons with likely no Dele or Kane, can’t take any chances in the league at all. We also have City & dips away, so top 4 is far from guaranteed.

    • Chauvelin 27/01/2019 at 9:07 pm

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. We now need to win against Watford and Newcastle or else the strategy failed to pay off.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 27/01/2019 at 9:12 pm

Not really, if we fail to beat these two, we can argue we had a better chance of doing so with a good few players rested. This will also give us a better chance against chavs & goons in the weeks to come. 37 injuries this season, in just over half the season, can’t remember anything like it. Gotta be realistic if you ask me, our squad needs the rest & recuperation.

So the day not a total loss. Way ahead of Tripp’s, Nando and Sanchez in that regard. And what has become of Wanyama?

  • Goatboy333 27/01/2019 at 9:09 pm

Watched bits of the Chelski game and I couldn’t help wonder how many of our FA Cup team today would get into theirs. Maybe Jan. Struggling to think of anymore.
Poch surely must be aware of this discrepancy. Question is, what’s he gonna do about it?

    • McG ⚽⚽ 27/01/2019 at 9:20 pm

Our team today was dictated by injuries & asian cup. Davies, Sissy, Kane & Dele to come back, Wanyama hopefully there now, Son back. We’ll have a strong finish to the season, this has just been terrible in terms of timing.

      • Sexy Beast 27/01/2019 at 9:36 pm

      • Goatboy333 27/01/2019 at 10:08 pm

Their Europa game is not for 2 and half weeks. They play PL games this Wed and Sat just like us. Then play Man City away the weekend after. Yet was still able to put out that team.

        • Chauvelin 27/01/2019 at 10:15 pm

I rather suspect we’d have won a home tie against Sheffield Wednesday with the team Poch selected today.
There is justifiable criticism of our squad, but that wasn’t. Chelsea had it relatively easy.

          • Goatboy333 27/01/2019 at 10:35 pm

I’m not talking about fixtures, but personnel. Chelsea don’t need to rely on a lucky draw avoiding a PL team to progress like we seem to (due to prioritising elsewhere).

            • Caspurs 27/01/2019 at 10:38 pm

To be fair, no other team in the PL has suffered 37 injuries this season as we have.

              • Goatboy333 27/01/2019 at 10:48 pm

True the injuries we have suffered have been constant this season but going into this game we only had Kane, Dele and I think Davis injured, far fewer than some on Physioroom.

        • Sexy Beast 27/01/2019 at 10:29 pm

But they defo don’t have the injuries we have and have had all season which have now caught up with us.

We generally are a physical team. Its expected. Not the Phil Jones thing but we definately get our share.

  • Chauvelin 27/01/2019 at 10:06 pm

Chelsea manager Sarri has never won any silverware in 28 years as a coach/manager, at 19 different clubs.

Is any pundit going on about Cheatski’s manager not proving himself after nearly three decades?

  • Ronwol196061 27/01/2019 at 10:14 pm

Pat Jennings was heralded when he came from Watford. Then for half a season with us was nervous and made all kind of mistakes… Then of course he went on to be a great player and legend.

Sanchez played a couple of good steady games when he came. He has since second guessed himself on a regular basis. I’m hoping it’s a case if the Pat Jennings.

    • Chauvelin 27/01/2019 at 10:19 pm

Second season now Ronwol. He isn’t living up to his record price tag yet. Of course he’s still young and could be compared to John Stones as someone who makes plenty of mistakes. But he does look like he can be bullied off the ball.

      • Ronwol196061 27/01/2019 at 10:26 pm

His positioning is iffy. He us either too far away from his marker or handcuffed and too close.
He is best at leg tackles rather than using his power

        • Ronwol196061 27/01/2019 at 10:28 pm

He is hesitant with the ball, too careful. I love Foyth. He is about as confident, maybe more than anyone in the team. Maybe takes more chances but you can learn that way too

          • AntSpurs 27/01/2019 at 10:59 pm

Foyth is a mile ahead with his ball carrying but Sanchez makes less mistakes

Putting my house on it , not normally a betting man unless its 6500-1 which ive lost that bet on Spurs doing the triple, Sanchez is the real McCoy, being bullied at times where hes taking the difficult route out , not being bullied at all really. Hes finding his feet.

From what I remember of moaninho discussing his lack of ball/carrying skills , is where he lacks . Hes finding that.

  • Shelfy 27/01/2019 at 11:09 pm

I think the main reason Poch likes Sanchez is his pace. He allows us to play the high line and compress the opponent without too much risk of being beaten by a fast counter attack.
    Doesn’t always work out.
He is still very young for a CB

    • AntSpurs 27/01/2019 at 11:12 pm

I think he is hesitant at times and very confident at others. Slide tackling he is great at but whenthe ball is bouncing and the opposing player is physical he doesnt go in as solid as he would in a slide.
When he has the ball he is overly cautious too. On his videos from before he can pass long and fairly accurate but he doesnt. He looks overly cautious at these times

        • AntSpurs 27/01/2019 at 11:48 pm

Disgraceful not playing Eriksen, Winks, Toby etc. Our last proper chance of a pot this decade meaning that this has been our worst decade since the war.
Poch can do one now for me.

    • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 9:40 am

As many of us on here remember fondly FA Cup success (Hillsborough,Highbury in 81 and Villa Park 82, stand out for me with the Finals of course ) but the game is much more about money now and when finishing 4th in the league is worth 10 times more than a domestic cup win financially club managers will prioritise accordingly. We all know that top 4 for our club is crucial going into to new stadium, yesterday was inevitable with our injury list and it seems to me our luck (Adebayour’s Juju curse needs lifting) at the moment.
Soon enough we will be on a level playing field with our competitors as we to will have a “home” ground which in time will become a fortress and hopefully will give us that bit extra that is currently missing and hopefully will be the final ingredient for success.

He simply threw the cup. Anyway who wants an inflated ego. Oh what next Mauricio. When we go out of the CL I’m so looking forward to your words of wisdom!
But then again that would be egotistical of me!

      • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 10:03 am

And had he played Eriksen and Toby and one of them pulls a hammy you’d be ok with that as long as we got through?

        • Cavey 28/01/2019 at 10:05 am

          Your words, not mine!

  • McG ⚽⚽ 28/01/2019 at 9:44 am

    Fatty B
Glad we got those two energy-sapping, time-wasting non-enti competitions out of the way. We’ll be concentrating on the EPL and CL double now. Which is how it should be.

It’s not how it should be at all, but we’re decimated with injuries, so no point crying about fielding a weakened side in the cup. If we were at full strength & still went with that side, then yes it’s wrong. Imagine the tears if we blow top 4 this season & finish below the goons or United, with no CL for our first full season in the new place.

  • McG ⚽⚽ 28/01/2019 at 9:58 am

I’m reading Leicester are in talks for Tielemans & Charlie Austin, two players there we could do with ourselves, both within our reach financially too.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 28/01/2019 at 10:05 am

I’ll add to this, Fernando for Austin & that’s another home grown in the squad.

  • Cavey 28/01/2019 at 10:03 am

So if Toby, Eriksen and Winks were so tired why does he keep on telling the fans he is so so happy with his squad when it’s simply not good enough to beat a crap Palace side that needed Spurs help to beat them. He’s dancing to the Levy tune and telling porkies to cover up for his bosses thriftiness, but we don’t mind paying too dollar for second rate produce!

    • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 10:08 am

We have a cracking squad Cavey, of course it could be tinkered with and improved it is purely the injuries that are doing for us. If Liverpool were without Salad, Mane and Firminho would they have beaten Palace last weekend??

      • Goatboy333 28/01/2019 at 10:10 am

With Sturridge, Shaqiri, Lallana and a fit Oxlade Chamberlain in the team I reckon so.

        • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 10:17 am

Well the Ox is not fit and I don’t think they have the fire power when those three are out, so not for me they would have.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 28/01/2019 at 10:09 am

37 injuries Cavey, that’s the only reason we have tired players & are out the cup. We need to improve on Fernando, full backs & find a Dembele replacement, but those aren’t the reason we have tired players, injuries & the world cup are to blame.

      • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 10:10 am

Blimey, I totally agree with you! lol and we will have a ten day break!!

        • McG ⚽⚽ 28/01/2019 at 10:37 am

Yes, I was looking elsewhere, I see the 10 day break!!

  • Goatboy333 28/01/2019 at 10:07 am

Have we signed Adrian Robot yet?

    • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 10:15 am

He is a twat Goaty, Liverpool are not in need of a midfielder at the moment, perhaps he’s been promised a mega contract if he goes in the summer on a free which makes sense as paying Β£20m now seems odd to me, we should have offered PSG Β£10m and him the other Β£10m on top of the Β£5m signing on fee we were prepared to pay. In any case its all about the money for him so maybe we have dodged a bullet there.

      • Goatboy333 28/01/2019 at 10:38 am

Just clutching at straws really. Need something to cheer me up after 2 cup exits. Hopefully we’ll get a positive stadium announcement this week. I think this every year but next season really could be special. We had 3 big obstacles to overcome this season 1) lack of rest/preseason for World Cup players and subsequent injuries 2) Still no home ground to play at 3) No new signings. The first 2 will take care of themselves, over to Poch/Levy for no.3.

        • SpurAndy πŸ₯§πŸ’ 28/01/2019 at 10:43 am

Don’t see any straws clutched there Goatboy. This season we’ve been hamstrung in more ways than one yet we’re still punching with the big boys. Bad week yes, but all things considered we are in a very good place imo.

        • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 11:09 am

We have a very good team that has managed to break into the top 4 cartel and given us some great memories in the last few years, but I feel this team is in need of a lift. The idea that we cannot find players that will improve the team is to me a myth. I like everyone else has no idea what the reality is regarding clubs finances, personally I find it difficult to believe we don’t have money to invest in the team. This transfer window is never a great time to add the type of quality we need, this summer could I feel be a watershed moment, failure to invest well could I fear have a detrimental effect. The team needs new faces, fresh (genuine) competition to provide the lift that the team needs.

          • Goatboy333 28/01/2019 at 11:18 am

Agreed. I mean, how many of our first 11 feel under threat from someone sat on the bench? Of course we’re unlikely to buy Β£50m players as bench warmers but that team that started against Palace was really poor in so many areas. No good reason why the 10th richest club in the word can’t pump some money into giving us a squad with greater depth.

  • Hartley 28/01/2019 at 10:26 am

Not at all, he used to bang on about winning a cup over top four that’s all.
I respect either view, I prefer top four for the player retention aspect and Europa is dogshit.

          • Hartley 28/01/2019 at 11:11 am

What is the point of player retention if the players that you retain win fuck all because they are deemed to good to play?

  • SpurAndy πŸ₯§πŸ’ 28/01/2019 at 10:28 am

Would the DESK prefer to win the Carabao Cup or get in the top 4 and play in the CL? Ask that question to Hazard, Salah, Pogba or De Bruyne and I think we know the answer. Of course those players have won silverware so one more minor trophy probably means nothing. I’m just not sure that the Carabao or facup when compared to playing in the CL is any different for the DESK. Of course they want to win pots but these are minor trophies compared to the PL and CL. I think it’s a shame but that’s the reality.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 28/01/2019 at 10:40 am

I want to see us win trophies as much as the next person, but if we want to keep this squad together, and then attract the additional quality we crave, CL has to be the priority for the time being, sad but true.

    • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 10:44 am

True. Playing Tranmere probably doesn’t create the same excitement as Barcelona/Inter/PSV.

We don’t all have to agree on that and that is fine, but every chairman in football will agree with Willian in private and that is a fact.

Us fans should read this as it perhaps gives an insight to how Pooch operates.

    • Wasdanspurs 28/01/2019 at 11:14 am

Is an interesting read thanks. What’s frustrating is we’ll not know the truth until we finally land someone. I’d much rather skip the likes of grealish and barkley if poch is going to discard them the way he did janssen and Clinton, but hard to know if he’s keeping his powder dry for the right players or has no powder.

      • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 11:27 am

I suspect we will try and get a young English talent, the lad at Leeds is looking the most likely but we shall see, and I do think Pooch has enough powder the problem is the N’Dombele’s of this world are within our reach fee wise but we just can’t pay the wages that our competitors will offer. Rabiot is another example, he will have been offered vastly more than we were prepared to pay him if he rides out the remaining six months of his contract and the reputation Levy has when selling players probably won’t have helped and signing for us he would be in a Levy trap. Young up and coming players seems our only option.

        • Goatboy333 28/01/2019 at 11:32 am

Wouldn’t it be nice if we splashed the cash on a player that didn’t have potential but was the finished article? Someone we could all get genuinely excited about playing for us. Can’t remember the last time I felt that. As Danny Rose said, first thing I’ve done when we’ve signed someone these last few years is google them.

          • Sexy Beast 28/01/2019 at 11:39 am

Even Man City have a wage ceiling that they won’t exceed as it causes problems in the squad, look at the disharmony in the Manure set up after Sanchez joined and Pep let him slip through his fingers, and of course Manure have players all wanting more now. It’s a fine balancing act that to this point Levy has got it right, remember Batshit at the Chavs signed at Β£100k a week and they can’t get rid of him on those wages, whilst we are struggling to offload Janssen on a reported Β£20k/Β£30k a week. We have to live by our means.

  • Bruxie 28/01/2019 at 11:12 am

    My frustration has subsided.
I was never angry about yesterday. I felt it coming when I saw the team sheet.
Looking at the whole situation at this point in the season, we are in a reasonably good place. We have a decent league position considering our lack of a proper home. We’re still in the UCL and have a hold on a coveted top 4 place.
Arse would swap with us in a heartbeat.
We should remember where we were 4-5 years ago.
However. There’s a glaring gap in quality between our first team and squad players.
We are short of two full backs, a class midfielder and a striker.
Not an earth-shattering revelation, I know. And not one that would cost more than we could afford if we go for the up and coming prospects out there.
The main outlay would be the midfielder. We need a top, top midfielder with a presence and leadership qualities.
We seem to have a gap in the development of young players. Those that have been given a chance this season seem “not quite ready” when we should be able to slot them in more smoothly. We are unfortunate in the sense that they are just a year off the pace.
Skipp is just too young at present and more suited to a spell on loan at a good Championship side. And KWP is in need of more starts or a loan spell too.
Other than the two cups, when can anyone see them starting a game unless we are down to the bare bones?
The performances yesterday highlighted the lack of depth. A missed penalty and a glaring miss from a fringe player did the rest.

Our fixtures are now mapped out. No replays, no away games against cloggers and decent gaps between games.

There are positives to losing yesterday. No many, but there are some.

What is the point of player retention if the players that you retain win fuck all because they are deemed to good to play?

That question is the greatest conundrum in the history of mankind. Why do you think Newton, Einstein and Hawking took the easy way out and concentrated on Physics.
