McG’s transfer window take-away

As we stand, how are we looking??

To date there appears to be a distinct lack of transfer activity taking place down at Hotspur way (not for the want of trying I’m sure), & I’ve already heard bleating’s about how thread bare our squad is looking?! (I did laugh) It got me thinking, how strong are we should no ins or outs take place?

Without looking at our 1stteam players, I’d say we’re light in terms of backup for Kane & Eriksen, same for Dembele & Tobe’s (should they depart), that’s about it. We’ve a very decent squad, & with the likes of Wanyama, Lamela, & Moura up to speed, that’s like having 3 new players alone. Can we add Toby & Rose to these three? I sincerely hope so.

As some are more than aware, my preference is two pacey wingbacks, so I’m hoping Rose knuckles down and comes good this season, and that Trippier improves on a defensive level. If not, I’ll want to see changes next summer!!

Poch needs to work out how to break down these sides that will try to park the proverbial bus, if he cracks it, I see absolutely no reason why we won’t be up there once again challenging with the best of them. The league title will likely be a stretch too far, but if Levy does manage to bring in a couple of proper big hitters, I don’t think we’re actually that far off.

I’ve put together the table below detailing current players available for each position, & have given them a rating out of 10. From what I can make of things, we have depth in nearly every position bar 2 (Eriksen & Kane). So, what are your thoughts in terms of depth & player ratings??

Having just finished 3rdin a season  where we were apparently going to struggle to make top 5/6, I think we’ll be surprising people as usual, & quite a few will be eating their hats, yet again!

  • GDawg 23/07/2018 at 1:03 pm

Most teams struggle to break down the bus parkers. We need either out and out pace to outflank (this has to come with quality delivery, something Danny does not seem to have mastered), or players who can beat a man through guile. Out of that list, Moura is the one I am most curious about. He showed flashes of quality, I’d love to see him hit his straps. The other is Coco, if he can return to his best he has skills to unlock tight defences

    • HD 23/07/2018 at 1:06 pm

Moura, Coco and Winks. Stay healthy fellas, we need you.

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 23/07/2018 at 1:06 pm

Agree GD, I think Moura has more beatability than Eric but if Zaha or Martial were to come (subject to price) then they would definitely help in that department.

  • Freund or Foe 23/07/2018 at 1:09 pm

Nicely done, Mc to the G.
Agree with most. The Kane back up is a tough one. We won’t get a decent ready made striker, who I their right mind would come and expect to get enough game time with one of our own quite rightfully hogging that berth. Think we’ve proved over the last few seasons that over a short period we can cope with his absence. I’m hoping one of our kids, Sterling or Griffiths get a bit more involved, though with Griffiths not going on US tour it seems it won’t be him.
I’d like a Dembele upgrade, one that is more forward thinking, one capable of getting the ball forward quickly, and a better passing ability than Dembele, Dier, Wanyama etc.
Don’t think we need a Toby back up, the Foyth is strong in me.
I’d be more than happy with something special in the middle as above, and a few prospects.
    Now, back to the rum.

    • Hartley 23/07/2018 at 1:25 pm

We should use the Foyth more often

      • Chauvelin 23/07/2018 at 1:35 pm

This. I like the cut of his jib.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 23/07/2018 at 1:26 pm

Cheers Foe. I’m hoping for Martial or similar. Think Kane needs the competition & would also allow us to rest him here & there without disrupting the side too much.

      • GDawg 23/07/2018 at 1:27 pm

What if it meant letting Toby go?

        • McG ⚽⚽ 23/07/2018 at 1:34 pm

I can’t see us reverting to 5 at the back (too many attacking midfielders), so I won’t be shocked if he goes, I’d expect us to sign dee lite if he does…

            • Bardamu 23/07/2018 at 3:39 pm

I think it’s the bookies equivalent of pricing things at 99p. When you’re placing bets, “over 2.5 goals” sounds a bit more enticing than “at least 3.0 goals” if you get me?
I suspect that’s their logic anyway.

I am opposed to whatever Taff’s position is on the subject… 😘

      • Bardamu 23/07/2018 at 5:36 pm

I’d take Maguire if Toby left. He looked class in the World Cup.
There were rumours on SC today that Toby now wants to stay and needs to convince Poch he’s back with the programme. It’s SC though so pinch of salt required…

        • Chauvelin 23/07/2018 at 6:02 pm

          Ha ha.
Sort it out man to man.
          Hope Toby stays.

          • HD 🇺🇸 23/07/2018 at 6:07 pm

Yep, that’s probably all it would take. I hope that happens.

        • UnkleTaff 23/07/2018 at 6:07 pm

I’d ship Toby out and replace him with Maguire in a heartbeat.

Alderweireld has had one good really season with us. Admittedly that was an exceptionally good season, but take it out of the equation and he’s an above average defender, no more. Throw his age, fitness concerns and declining transfer value into the mix and selling him this summer becomes a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned.

          • HD 🇺🇸 23/07/2018 at 6:08 pm

            Fair analysis.

            • Bardamu 23/07/2018 at 6:15 pm

              Yep, agreed chaps.

          • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 6:09 pm

            Surprisingly I don’t conker.

            • HD 🇺🇸 23/07/2018 at 6:11 pm

I am OK if he stays. If he goes we need a proven replacement.

              • Freund or Foe 23/07/2018 at 6:31 pm

And well you should not. For my ally is the Foyth. And a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. It’s energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we…(Poch pinches Sissoko’s shoulder)…not this crude matter. You must feel the Foyth around you. Here, between you…me…the tree…the rock…everywhere! Yes, even between this land and that stadium!

                • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 6:35 pm

Are you on that midichlorian rum again?

                • HD 🇺🇸 23/07/2018 at 6:37 pm

That is far beyond my realm of comprehension. But whatever you are on, I want some. 😬

            • McG ⚽⚽ 23/07/2018 at 9:06 pm

              I conker with Cas.

          • Matt 23/07/2018 at 6:20 pm

In fact, Toby’s injury record is poor throughout his career. As you say, a stellar season but the facts would indicate that was as good as it’s going to get.

            • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 6:25 pm

Would that be this injury record? Seems like all this chatter about being injury prone isn’t reflected in the stats.

  • Matt 23/07/2018 at 6:24 pm

I don’t think we need to buy a HK like for like backup. We play a false 9 which works for City and worked well for us. Son and hopefully Moura cover that. We looked very dangerous playing that way.

    • UnkleTaff 23/07/2018 at 6:29 pm

I’m not sure we even need a back up for Kane. We coped perfectly well without him when we had to last year. Indeed, we were forced to play a different type of game which our opponents didn’t seem to be prepared for. Lamela looks raring to go this year, Moura should now be up to speed — add a Zaha or a Martial to our list of options and I’d say we’re good to go.

      • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 6:31 pm

I actually thought we looked more threatening going forwards without Kane in the team.

        • Bardamu 23/07/2018 at 6:32 pm

Yes, there’s always this worry that Kane might get a bad injury and our season would be over, but when he was out last season we were more prolific than ever and then weirdly dried up when he returned. It’s not an area that concerns me as much as a couple of seasons ago.

  • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 7:09 pm

It’s amazing what can be achieved in one year..

  • Stevo1987 23/07/2018 at 7:25 pm

            Could be…..

  • Superspoz 🏆 23/07/2018 at 7:29 pm

Regarding above about the back up to Kane, we don’t need a back up.

    • Stevo1987 23/07/2018 at 7:33 pm

Don’t we have two back up’s but both are a bit shit?

      • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 7:37 pm

        We do?! Does Poch know?

        • Chauvelin 23/07/2018 at 7:49 pm

          Vinnie and Fernie.

I still think Janssen didn’t get the chance to come into a team that was in form. Ten starts when no one was playing that well then five minutes here and there.
That’s the side of Pochettino I don’t agree with.

      • Superspoz 🏆 23/07/2018 at 7:37 pm

We do indeed. A real shame..

        • Stevo1987 23/07/2018 at 7:45 pm

Drop Kane and play twin strikers.

        • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 7:45 pm

Ah, I’d forgotten about them, until now.. : (

  • Stevo1987 23/07/2018 at 7:49 pm

I prefer Janssen as at least he can run around a bit.

  • Flat Oeuf 23/07/2018 at 8:06 pm

Regarding above about the back up to Kane, we don’t need a back up.

Spoz, I agree with this. Lamela could play as the (false-ish) 9. He can receive the ball back to goal, swinging a few elbows in the process. He can lay off a nice ball. He’s got a cool first-time finish. Can head the ball. Works well in tight spaces when he’s not running into them whilst dribbling. I honestly think he’s a better option than Son in that position.

    • Chauvelin 23/07/2018 at 8:12 pm

The singing is a bit much. Unsporting behaviour if you ask me.

    • Superspoz 🏆 23/07/2018 at 8:50 pm

The one thing I have always been impressed with is the positions he takes up. He’s always in the right place, his teammates don’t always find him but that’s another story. I’m expecting big big things from him this season.

      • Flat Oeuf 23/07/2018 at 9:32 pm

Me too, although a little trepidaciously

  • Stevo1987 23/07/2018 at 8:15 pm

I refer you back to my previous comment. We already have two false 9’s.

    • Flat Oeuf 23/07/2018 at 8:25 pm

But you like Janssen? I did not see anything in him that made me think he was a good fit for the way we play. And he always looked a touch heavy.

      • Stevo1987 23/07/2018 at 8:36 pm

I didn’t say I liked him. I said they were both a bit shit. I preferred Janssen as he could run about a bit.

        • Stevo1987 23/07/2018 at 8:37 pm

Anyway too hot to bicker. Well, that what the Missus said.

          • Flat Oeuf 23/07/2018 at 8:45 pm

Well that’s the truth. Anyway, I’ve got no real bicker with you at all. Lamela still needs to prove he can step up further. Janssen is toast and rightly so.

      • Chauvelin 23/07/2018 at 8:45 pm

We’ve scored goals without a conventional centre forward before and that’s a fact. The thing is to have options. Avoid predictability.

        • Superspoz 🏆 23/07/2018 at 8:54 pm

I thoroughly enjoyed the switch to the ole 433 when Kane went off injured (vs bourmouth i think) alli on the left, son on the right, Erik through the middle and Eriksen as th spare man behind. Very fluid indeed.

          • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 8:59 pm

I tend to think we’re becoming too one dimensional with Kane.

            • Flat Oeuf 23/07/2018 at 9:06 pm

  • Sniper 23/07/2018 at 9:12 pm

    Nice work McG.
Illustrates the point quite nicely; no need to panic. We have some depth in the squad already.
Poch already stated that he only wanted to bring in players that would improve us. We don’t automatically get the players me might want, that qualify that statement (*insert anti Levy and ENIC rhetoric here*).

    • Freund or Foe 23/07/2018 at 9:42 pm

Levy’s far too busy telling all the workmen how angry he is.
He lines them up before each shift.
“Dave the tiler, I’m really fucking angry, now go finish the gents in block 104, West. Next!”
“Brian the plumber, I’m really fucking angry, now get them’s sinks connected in the bagel kitchen on north upper. Next!”

      • Freund or Foe 23/07/2018 at 9:46 pm

And if you really want to know if it’ll be ready on time, have a chat with Terry the sparks.

FoF, are you or anyone else aware of ‘Spurs-List’? Not heard of them myself. But apparently what they say, must be believed implicitly.

          • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 10:03 pm

            Are they a religious cult?

          • Freund or Foe 23/07/2018 at 10:11 pm

Not a clue, Chauv. What I do know is that if there are 3000 chaps working on a site that is going 24/7, the management structure must be immense, but there are probably only a few that really get a feel for the project timeline, and those chaps/chapettes are the only ones who will know if Levy is angry or not. That’s no disrespect to “the workmen”, Dave knows he can tile 15-20m2 a day on new, flat walls. Terry knows he can 2nd fix 40 downlights a day, if he gets a clear run.

            • Freund or Foe 23/07/2018 at 10:29 pm

Any notion that Dave or Terry are “in the know” on the completion of an 850mil stadium project is preposterous.
Chinese whispers must spread around a site that size like the plague.

Perfect chance to play Son as false 9 at Newcastle; Kane needs the rest. I recall reading Moura could play down the middle. Not so sure about Lamela. Give Harry a proper rest.

    • Bardamu 23/07/2018 at 9:33 pm

There are a few options there.
I’ve heard it said that Lamela is much more effective down the middle, as a no.10 or maybe false 9, and I don’t think we’ve ever played him there yet…

      • ronwol196061 23/07/2018 at 9:38 pm

I’m not sure about that his control over the ball with defenders around him are not the best.. He is better in space.
I think Dele is better that way

      • Sniper 23/07/2018 at 9:48 pm

I happen to be one of those old fashioned types who welcomes a player that actually WANTS to come to Spurs. It seems that Grealish fits into that category, by all accounts.
They might not be the real chocolate; the players we might sign, but the fact that they want to be in on what we are doing is good enough for me!
Lamela actually looks like he WANTS to play for Spurs. That, to me, counts for an awful lot!

        • ronwol196061 23/07/2018 at 9:51 pm

  • Sniper 23/07/2018 at 10:10 pm

I’d like to be controversial for a moment.
The system we employ needs someone up front as a ‘target man’ with someone playing in behind him (‘a false 9’) and two wide men (‘inverted wingers’ seems to be the fashion).
Kane has excelled in the target man role over the last seasons mainly, I would contend, because he is greedy. He shoots on sight rather than setting up the other three or anyone managing to get into the ‘box on a forward run.
Bobby Soldier tried his heart out in the role but simply wasn’t greedy enough to score enough, plus we didn’t make the runs into the ‘box under AVB’s ultra-conservative system.
Janssen had similar problems to Soldado. I think he is an excellent hold-up player and has been very successful at national level, where the Dutch give him much more support than we did at Spurs. Hence, he was scoring regularly at international level.
I reckon we should keep Janssen and work with him. Llorente is just an old fashioned target man who doesn’t have the same physical presence of Janssen or Kane.

    • Caspurs 23/07/2018 at 10:19 pm

Yep, that’s too controversial. If you could just reign it in a tad, it would be much appreciated..

I’m sure there will be plenty of security in place. Particularly if any VIP visits are involved.
There will be search sweeps for any explosive devices planted during construction, dogs, metal detectors (e.g. Magnetometers) and specialised teams trained for explosives searches of the areas to be utilised by protected people.

    Good afternoon folks (mornin’)..
Our transfer policy has caught up to us and we have surplus struggling to move on which is necessary to get players in. Do you all agree with this I wonder?
I think we will see deals like offering some of our surplus to other clubs plus cash for our targets. We might take a hit here and there but I am certain deals are to be done.
We definitely have to make sure we hit the ground running come August 11 and more importantly we have a verys trong year.
If we can’t entice players to come to Spurs now i am not sure when we could given the following:
-So many Spurs players in the finals of the WC

    • Syd 24/07/2018 at 6:33 am

Lol – Hang on i am not finished:
      – New stadium
      – World class training facilities
      – Golden boot winner
      – manager who gives the younger ones a shot
      – Poch.

Surely this should be enough to entice the players we target.

      • GDawg 24/07/2018 at 7:09 am

What may be hard to accept some is that Poch does not appear concerned about landing big money signings. In fact evidence suggests he is happier taking moldable players and developing them to fit his system

        • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 7:15 am

I am sure there must be first team ready players Pochettino would consider would fit nicely. But if they aren’t possible to bring in for whatever reason, he’d probably advise going for a talented youngster, who as you say, can be developed instead.

          • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 7:20 am

But of course, the snag there is that Mr Levy would need convincing that there wasn’t an Academy player who can be utilised rather than buying in a youngster. Surely that was the inference of Daniel’s now well worn statement (not needing to spend 20, 30, 40 million pounds) at the Nasdaq last summer.

            • GDawg 24/07/2018 at 7:40 am

We didn’t have any home grown youngsters break into the first team last season. In fact I don’t think we’ve had one since Winks

            • Fat Bertha 24/07/2018 at 7:46 am

G’morning. Admittedly, I never paid any attention to all that stuff but I’m nominally interested to know just what it is about Levy and/or what he said that’s so objectionable. Do we think he’s lieing? Is he actively trying to deceive someone? Is he wrong and just plain deceived himself? If he meant what he said, what are his motives? If he didn’t mean what he said, what are his motives for saying what he did?

              • Flat Oeuf 24/07/2018 at 7:48 am

It seems like the perfect system for a modern top-tier football club, to me.
Was there an aspirational element to Danno’s comments? I really don’t know but the reaction to his comments seem to me to be a case of ‘it must be sh*t us Levy said it’ more than anything else.

              • Sniper 24/07/2018 at 7:48 am

                We need answers.

                • GDawg 24/07/2018 at 7:52 am

Why would you not try to sing the praises of your own academy? Its another revenue stream

              • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 7:59 am

You misread me, or I didn’t express myself correctly. We won’t or don’t or shouldn’t buy someone who is mouldable unless there isn’t someone in the Academy who might be that person. And I would assume that there is.

                • Syd 24/07/2018 at 8:01 am

                • Sniper 24/07/2018 at 8:02 am

I reckon the reality has been alluded to by Levy; the market at present is over-inflated. You pay ludicrous money for players of any talent. If they happen to be English and help keep within the rules, the price doubles.
Of course, all this assumes that a player wishes to come to the club and the club is willing to pay the expected wages (and Agent fees).

                  • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 8:04 am

Furthermore, you’d expect that one of our own youngsters would have a deep seated desire to play for the club. It’s odd when that doesn’t happen and they bugger off to Germany for instance, but so long as they command a fee I suppose it’s still positive.

                • Fat Bertha 24/07/2018 at 8:13 am

        • Syd 24/07/2018 at 7:37 am

Hi Dawg. The trouble is we don’t know really what is going on in the back ground. We only have what we read in the aggregators. Poch has not said a thing re targets, we hear all this about Grealish and Zaha (I would take them both) but there is no genuine link with them. I have no idea how good some of youth are that will on the USA tour.
Perhaps we have a few diamonds of our own.
I have said it before – the players we need either don’t want to leave where they are, do want to leave but their club have over the top valuations, we don’t want to pay the wages they want, etc etc…
No ONE knows our true targets…

          • GDawg 24/07/2018 at 7:41 am

True. It’s all conjecture until it’s signed off

    • McG ⚽⚽ 24/07/2018 at 7:50 am

Cheers Syd. This must be Levy’s ultimate nightmare scenario, held to ransome by european clubs who don’t have to sell until after we do. I had no idea this was the case before it was pointed out on here! I wanted the window closed earlier, but not at our own expense. Seems ridiculous the FA chose to ignore this fact?!!

      • Syd 24/07/2018 at 8:00 am

Worst comes to worse…we have the same team as last season but with more minutes to be played by:
I am not saying this is the bees knees but it ain’t half bad either. There would be quite a few clubs who wish they had these players.
I think Janssen, Onomah and N’Koudou are definitely gone as straight out sales or make weights.

        • McG ⚽⚽ 24/07/2018 at 8:05 am

I’m not too sure we’ll see much of Winks if he misses preseason. But for Wanyama, Moura, Lamela, Rose & Toby – imagine the cost if we tried to sign all of those in one window?? Having them fit & available this season is a huge bonus on top of any incomings..

          • Sniper 24/07/2018 at 8:09 am

I think you’ll find that it was the PL members that voted unanimously to close the window early. It wasn’t the FA.

I disagree Syd. I think it’s feckin’ awesome.
The bed-wetters who squeel the loudest about the lack of transfers are the very same that bitch and wail when a player is signed but who doesn’t set the world alight immediately.

I know we’ve signed some real disappointments, but which club hasn’t ? this fact only serves to demonstrate to me how difficult it is to add to a decent squad and improve it.

Gladstone, on the other hand, is used to daily tongue-lashings from his beloved boss…so welcomes any insults and derision.

    • Syd 24/07/2018 at 7:55 am

      Flatty – now you have me a little excited….I checked…yes a little

    • Bardamu 24/07/2018 at 8:08 am

Yes, I’m sure there was talk on SC yesterday of “In the next 24 hours we’ll know our chief midfield target”. Late-morning it was, so just a few hours left for the scoop to be revealed…

      • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 8:14 am

I’m a little deflated to hear we are announcing a target. In fact it’s almost meaningless. We’re adults, you announce a signing, not a wishlist.

        • Fat Bertha 24/07/2018 at 8:17 am

Haha. That’s the quality of ITK, folks, right there.

          • Bardamu 24/07/2018 at 8:49 am

“We now know the target. Cannot reveal at this stage as I don’t want to compromise my source but if it comes off Poch is being backed. Will know more in 48 hours but as you know things can change.”

That’s my attempt at ITK writing. Do I get the job?

        • Flat Oeuf 24/07/2018 at 8:53 am

Gladstone said a signing, not a target. I think it’s a different sauce.

Are we doing it on HP?

  • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 8:09 am

    Fat Bertha

Is this because I said his Nasdaq statement was well worn? Well, it is oft quoted by people so it is well worn. I didn’t think the phrase actually had connatations (good/bad/indifferent) other than meaning endlessly repeated.

    • Fat Bertha 24/07/2018 at 8:11 am

      No, not that.

  • Syd 24/07/2018 at 8:37 am

    1. Does anyone like the Spurs website….I think it is sooo cheap
    2. Does anyone like the new strip. I have to be honest I like all 3 of the strips.

    • Bardamu 24/07/2018 at 8:41 am

I’m unconvinced by the home shirt’s navy colour-bleed into the shorts but sure we’ll quickly get used to it after watching the 1st match.
I like the away and 3rd kits – I must have a thing for jade.

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 24/07/2018 at 8:44 am

Personally can’t get to excited about a strip. If it was my choice it would be simples. Something old school, say from the 60’s. Straight forward white shirt, chicken badge, number on the back, no names. I know it would lose vast amounts on sponsorship so its a no go but just my preference.

    • 61SpursNut 24/07/2018 at 8:46 am

      1. I have a personal dislike of websites that are driven by oversized banner headings. The old classic style was much easier to navigate.
      2. I’ve never seen a Spurs shirt that I don’t like.

      • Fat Bertha 24/07/2018 at 8:56 am

Who remembers the hooped stockings of a few years ago? I hated those.

    • GDawg 24/07/2018 at 8:53 am

I hate them. The strips last season were sooo much better

      • GDawg 24/07/2018 at 8:58 am

I don’t have to wear them though, and I won’t be buying any. I have last season’s away and 3rd, they are classic and great. GD Jnr has the home strip. The badge is classic

Why would you not try to sing the praises of your own academy? Its another revenue stream

After Pochettino made the ‘mini-Messi’ remark praising tbe potential of Marcus Edwards, I think everyone at the club has learnt a lesson and are going about developing the Academy players in a more measured fashion without the hyperbole.
Of course, on certain other blogs, if you don’t big up the youngsters that must mean they are ‘junk’ (doesn’t he love that word).

  • Sexy Beast 24/07/2018 at 9:07 am

Lol – Hang on i am not finished:
    – New stadium
    – World class training facilities
    – Golden boot winner
    – manager who gives the younger ones a shot
    – Poch.
Surely this should be enough to entice the players we target.

I agree, looks to me like Pooch is targeting Martial as back up to Kane and can play wide, this is likely his no 1 target up front hence the waiting game.
Kovacic would likely be his no 1 target for midfield and its now a waiting game to see if we can entice him to the Lane. Gomes is likely his no 2 target.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Toby goes to UTD and Martial comes our way and we wait one year for De Ligt if he has given Pooch the nod in terms of wanting to join us as Ajax have said that he will not be sold this summer, this could mean Dembele stays one more year and Dier is then back up CB for a season. Just my thoughts.

      • Caspurs 24/07/2018 at 10:47 am

Well, I think I’d pack it all in. What would be the point?

Bardamu, the point is, he wants to be proved right by events. He’s hoping that things go wrong.

He’s hoping the stadium won’t be ready on time.
He’s hoping the team fails to achieve so he can slam Levy.
He’s hoping the fans won’t attend games.

He wants to be shown that he knew best. Nothing would give him a greater kick than being justified.

So it seems to me at any rate. I think he himself maybe hasn’t realised he’s crossed over a line, and it isn’t just criticism any more, he’s made it a personal greivance.

It’s also true of many of the stalwarts, never happier than when we’re 0-1 down against a bottom feeder. The crescendo of squeals in real time is akin to the queue in a piglet abattoir.

The inability to enjoy or celebrate anything Spurs because of the blind hatred is what defines their support. This is true right across the Twittersphere, which I’ve just started on.

The sad thing about the internet — and social media in general — is that it has given people who have absolutely nothing of interest to say the platform on which to say it.

Could never see why H would pick a few nobodies commenting on Twitter to back up his point. Complete waste of time.

I have to say that I follow these conversations on here avidly and have noticed one thing above all else.
The good bloggers go where there is an empathy and a stimulus to their blogging.
I wonder how we will deal deal with the 1st knob who turns up on here and whether or not we interact with them.
I like it that the people on here made the leap voluntarily and match each other’s ambition for a healthy blog – free of insults and bile.
Time will tell but I hope we are above all of that.
            I like it here.

It’s a far healthier environment. The accusation against us is that we’re all happy to agree with each other but if they actually read all the posts they’d find there is often disagreement. It’s just that we don’t feel the need to go into defcon 1 over it.

The other thing they miss about this blog, is that we LISTEN to each others views and take them on board.

Figuratively, we don’t just stand on a box and bellow at each other through megaphones.

When you’re dead, you don’t know that you’re dead, it’s just painful for the others.
It’s the same if you’re stupid.

        What about Lazarus?

        • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 10:32 am

He didn’t know he was dead till he wasn’t?

          • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 10:32 am

‘Ere Lazarus, where you been then?

            • UnkleTaff 24/07/2018 at 10:36 am

One of my favourite film quotes of all time is from Martin Scorsese’s “Last Temptation of Christ”:

“So Lazarus, how do you feel?”

              • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 10:46 am

A film I missed. Who was the scriptwriter for that gem?

                • UnkleTaff 24/07/2018 at 10:49 am

Paul “Taxi Driver” Schrader, I think. So he really ought to have known better.

But, the bottom line is that it is a Scorsese film and as such is well worth a look. It’s actually a pretty decent offering from what I remember.

                  • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 10:52 am

Yep, just looked it up. Screenplay for Raging Bull as well to his credit.

                    • UnkleTaff 24/07/2018 at 10:55 am

Here’s something I’m guessing you don’t know (as not many people do): that whole “Are you talking to me?” scene in Taxi Driver? Improvised. There’s no reference to it at all in the script of the film.

                    • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 11:09 am

No, didn’t know that. And that expressed the psyche of the movie, not just an add on.

Dismantling the opposition has always been the realm of Manure and RM – and now others are following suit.
They both unsettle players by using the media to start the rumours and it’s usually when the player is on holiday and out of touch with their current club.
The practice complies with a recent post I read about the various stages of a transfer window and which makes sense of the current shenanigans and brinkmanship which captivates us mere spectators.
Are Spurs innocent of this practice? Tapping up at the WC; Phoning agents with the “are you interested?”; “Stay patient – we’ll make a last minute bid”.
It’s all a transfer strategy that has been going for years – enabling clubs to weaken their opposition and strengthen their reserves.
Our squad belies that practice – we don’t have a classy backup squad. But RM and Manure etc. seem to have our player targets in their reserves – Martial, Kovacic, Rabiot.
I think the rich clubs adopt this strategy as a passage of right and demonstrate the didderenc between a big hitter and ourselves.
Investment in the back up squad is not what we need – we need players to augment the 1st team and put some of our lesser 1st teamers into the backup squad.
That entails spending a big chunk.
    Have we got it?

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 24/07/2018 at 11:02 am

At the moment I’d say it’s a definite no. In 3 or 4 years time I’d be much more hopeful that we could get a really big hitter in if we need to.

    • Chauvelin 24/07/2018 at 11:18 am

I think our evolutionary phase is still to search for players like Davinson. Not yet superstars but looking like they are heading there. We haven’t reached the ‘buy them at their peak’ stage (unless something mind blowing happens in the next two weeks) and that’s why the purchase of Sissoko never felt other than a mistake two years ago because his age/profile didn’t fit where we were.

      • Bruxie 24/07/2018 at 11:25 am

I still cannot get over the thought that if we let some of the dross go…we’ll release funds for a transfer & wages for a superstar.
The problem is selling the blighters.

        • Caspurs 24/07/2018 at 11:30 am

Which is where the early closing of our transfer window will have a negative effect on securing the fees the club wants for the players surplus to requirements.

        • Bruxie 24/07/2018 at 11:31 am

          A superstar earns say £300k+.

Three dross players earn £40k each.
          That’s £120k towards the superstar.
£180k is not beyond our means for someone who merits it.
That’s two fewer players – but we wouldn’t miss them.
