Martial? What on earth is all the fuss about?

From what I’ve seen, he routinely runs into dead-ends and blasts shots into Row Z.  His crossing is worse than Kyle’s was (at his worst).

Now, I’m fully aware that Mourinho is The Talent Destroyer™️.  He couldn’t be worse at developing young players if he tried, which he doesn’t.

So is Martial a confidence player who’s wilted under the challenge set to him by The Surly One?  If so, I’d say he might not have the minerals to make it in the big time, full stop.

He can dribble a bit and has good feet, but his decision-making has been poor when he’s got into dangerous positions.  Frankly, I’d rather see Lucas Moura given a lot more of an opportunity and save the cash.  And that’s not a sleight on Moura, I think he looks like he could be a gem.

Martial?  Not for me, fanks.

Im a huge fan of Moura and at the least think that he should be give more of a chance.
Martial looks like he is capable. My view on his is that we have bigger priorities.

One is the Toby situation and a possible substitute and another is and its huge for me,an upgrade on Dembele. Someone who can call the shots from the half way line through to the final third. Tough enough to play the system and yet can help create goals. Not cheap but THE key position for us going forward.

We have Kane.Lamela,Dele,Eriksen,Son and Moura. If we got Martial I think I would give up Son.

    • Flat Oeuf 21/05/2018 at 2:25 pm

I’m not even sure if Martial would be an upgrade on Son. Why? Because Poch demands endless hard work, closing down and tracking back of his AMs. Does Martial strike you as this guy? Son has had to learn it and latterly in the season I saw him start to work as hard as Eriksen coming back (not just pressing from the front).

Anyway, as you say, we have other much bigger priorities. I think people are simply talking about Martial because ‘Toby’s going to Utd and we could do a swap’. It’s lazy thinking.

Son I dont get.He could look like a superstar at times…….er.. 10% of the time..he rest of the time he looks out of his league.

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 21/05/2018 at 2:29 pm

I think the answer is that he tries too hard. Its like Kane tries to hard at times and it comes off negative.
Son is one of the hardest workers on the team but really he needs to calm is down at times as he is too quick for himself and losing possession way too much

        • Flat Oeuf 21/05/2018 at 2:34 pm

Son’s problem is definitely consistency. A pattern is developing where he has purple patches and he’s unplayable and undroppable, then suddenly whooosh it’s gone. At these times, I think you’re right, he tries to force it…to do too much….and then he makes simple mistakes, including losing possession unnecessarily.

          • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 21/05/2018 at 3:58 pm

I am really thinking that we really need an engine room top line CM. This is more important by far than any other position. Getting the right player will meld together the defence and attack, take control of the ball and direct traffic from deep MF but needs vision too. I dont want to say Fabregas but a Fabregas/Zidane type player and its worth breaking the bank for even give us some of the creativity for some more strength but has to do all of that to some extent. I do like Kovacic but he is a bit more on the D side and Malcom who is more on the A side who I think can play the role.
I dont have one that fits 100% the bill (KDB is not available apparently) but Im sure there is another one is out there somewhere.

Before Coppola got the cast together for The Godfather. He had picked I think it was Martin Sheen in Marlon Brandos role (I think) and several others that rejected to play the roles. Somehow his 2nd choices were fantastic and it turned out to be the best group of movies ever.

In the late 50’s Nicholson bought Mackay,Jones,White and a couple of others. They fitted into the team like a glove within a season. Perfection. But it was one time. just one time. He never hot those highs again.

Sometimes its luck, sometimes the stars are aligned and things work.
Ive never given up and still have hope that it will work out for us.
That we will sign another player or two that are significant and we do reach some lofty heights I only ever saw back then

If I had a choice between an in form Son and Martial then I’d go with Son. But as already stated Son blows hot and cold so having a player like Martial on the bench gives us much more threat than some of our recent purchases. Moura is a talent but still early doors as to whether he can fit in for me. If the price is right I’d be happy to have Martial as I think Poch is the right man to get the best out of him.

      • SpurAndy 21/05/2018 at 4:47 pm

Get him in then convert him to a Fabregas/Zidane player. Simples. : -)

  • Freund or Foe 21/05/2018 at 4:49 pm

I’d love Martial. Think he’s an upgrade on Son/Moura/Lamela, especially if his form when he first signed for Manure is anything to go by.
Though I don’t think attacking mid is a priority, we’ve got quite a lot there already.

  • UnkleTaff 21/05/2018 at 6:44 pm

Under van Gaal, Rashford and Martial were an extremely potent double act. It comes as no surprise to me that they’ve both stagnated under Mourinho.

I’d happily welcome either (or both) at the Lane. It’s a squad game after all these days.

    • Caspurs 21/05/2018 at 6:51 pm

Sorry Taff, did you just say they were POTENT under Van Gaal?!
      Shirley that’s an oxymoron?

      • UnkleTaff 21/05/2018 at 7:01 pm

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — I think Utd made a HUGE mistake when they got rid of van Gaal. He’d just won them the FA Cup and, if you look at his record, it generally takes him three years at a club before his teams start to click. Utd were beginning to look really good when their board got rid of him in favour of Mourinho. That decision set them back a few years as far as I’m concerned.

        • SpurAndy 21/05/2018 at 7:08 pm

I don’t think there fans were prepared to wait. At a club like Manures instant success is mandatory.

          • UnkleTaff 21/05/2018 at 7:19 pm

But that’s my point. They’d got the waiting part out of the way. Utd were playing some fantastic football towards the end of van Gaal’s last seasonand topped it off with an FA Cup triumph.

Then Mourinho flashed his knickers at them and that was that.

            • SpurAndy 21/05/2018 at 7:57 pm

Were they really playing great football? I thought a lot of the fans were moaning about the style. Quite funny if that was the case as they’ve now got Moanhino who’s the antithesis of great football.

              • UnkleTaff 21/05/2018 at 8:10 pm

Towards the tail end of the season I think they were, yes.

        • ronwol196061🇨🇦🕎⚽🎷🎥 21/05/2018 at 7:38 pm

You mean if we had gotten Van Gaal three years ago we woukd have a cup and a shot at the league and a great future.

    Anuvver stadium update:
This time an email from SCX who are doing the pitch trays and rails.

    That’s a good question.
I’m assuming when you say ‘runners’ you mean the rails on which the tray wheels run on!
Without giving too much away…..each of the three trays run on three sets of rails, the central rail acts as the guide rail & users a similar design rail to that of tram rail; the sort of rail you sometimes see used in cities where there are trams in use ie Manchester, Sheffield & Nottingham. The outer two rails are fundamentally flat running crane rails.
So the key driver for us as designers, was to achieve as near as possible, a flat running surface for the NFL pitch to be laid on.
As you’re already probably thinking…..yes but what about the NFL pitch around the rails!
So in these areas, of which there are nine sections (three rails per tray x 3 trays), we leave a section (approx 1 metre) of artificial NFL pitch out, then once the trays have been retracted under the South stand, we then role out a section of approx 1 metre wide NFL pitch, which then fills the gap.
This system has been extensively tested & has proven to work very well.
Sorry I couldn’t go in too much detail at this stage, but hope it answers your question.
I look forward to hopefully seeing you at the ground one day & experiencing your amazing stadium.
    Regards,

    • UnkleTaff 21/05/2018 at 8:28 pm

I seem to be able to stay logged into the app pretty consistently. The website asks me to log back in from time to time but not sure there’s an actual Remember Me box, sorry dude

Just checked in t’other realm, and my sets don’t show up there either, so either me or my wordpress settings. I’ve been in wordpress, and my mac settings countless times but to no avail, never mind.
Maybe I should embrace being anonymous, hmmm, could be fun…

Mysterious, but not in a Stranger way

                    More of a strangeways way?

I have a couple of gestating ideas (the role of the Academy and a certain aspect of our transfer policy) but neither will be ready for a while yet, I’m afraid. Sorry.

And coming up with fresh, new ideas is quite difficult I think. It might help if you (or others) were to suggest a few topics worth discussing. That might then spark something off in a would-be author’s mind.

I’ve seen this reported this morning concerning the new FFP proposals, apparently called ‘Fair Play 2.0’. These are to be debated tomorrow I believe. Essentially they bar clubs from exceeding a negative net spend limit of €100m per season, substantially impacting the transfer policy of the European Superclubs. In addition they also plan to limit the maximum squad size to 25 players which would majorly impact clubs like Chelski and Citeh from having huge volumes of youngsters on loan. Difficult to see how UEFA can shoe horn this in without upsetting the super clubs big time and potentially bringing their breakaway from UEFA closer. More deets here:

If EUFA does as that article suggests, then I would imagine that we’re likely to see record levels of transfer activity from the so called big clubs this summer, in order to complete their business before these financial limitations are introduced. Hold on to yer seat folks (not you Spurs fans 😱)!

So the Gunners have got rid of an Arse and replaced him with a Dick…

Martial has scored some key goals for them. Is he lazy or just bored? On balance, I’d take him.
