Finally, for now, I’m still feeling aggrieved about Saturday. Poch has got to get us playing on the front foot for more of the game. Safe possession ends up being nothing of the sort when it hands the impetus to the opposition.

After a shaky start for 15-20 mins, we played our way back into the game well. That was the time to take some risks with our passing. Instead we kept the ball around the half way line and they waited for us to pass ourselves into a corner before nicking it off us and directly threatening our goal. It was very like the Juve game in that sense.

We need to impose ourselves more fully. I heard Liverpool supporters before the game talking about us as their bogey team. They were worried about us. We bottled it.

Poch needs to sort our formation out and quickly. We’ve played a 4231, 3 at the back, a diamond. It’s getting confusing and it looks like it’s draining some confidence from the lads.

    • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 9:55 am

I read we misplaced 112 passes. As with all stats, does that need further analysis? My take was that our passing looked worse than normal because Liverpool were so sharp in reading and intercepting our passes. They are very quick; Klopp has based the team on seven or eight very pacey players up front and passes we made which we would normally think were safe and reach their intended target were being cut out. Plus fast players are getting to those 50-50s quicker and we ended up getting turned over so many times. So what this means is that trying to play possession football with lots of passes against Liverpool is a dangerous game. Especially in the centre and at the back because their forwards are really pacy.

And here’s the problem. Does Pochettino learn? He expects players to develop and learn, but who is teaching HIM? If he played that game again today, would he have sussed out what went wrong and change it?

      • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:02 am

One take on it is as you say – Liverpool were to sharp in reading and intercepting our passes, another take would be that we were simply not good enough or quick enough on the ball and at reading the game. This is the premier league, we need to sharpen up!

      • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:02 am

Yeah, chucking in a non match fit Winks, & not playing Lamela once we knew Alli was out was a major factor. I love Lamela for his work rate & tenacity, was exactly what we needed & offers creativety to boot.

        • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:10 am

i couldn’t agree more, he was exactly what we needed, he made a difference with his aggressive style of play, something we lack all to often

          • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 10:15 am

And like Moura, Lamela came on and ran with the ball, he didn’t try to pass it around the opposition. We needed to be direct and commit their defenders.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:17 am

It’s infectious, once the team starts to see a player like Lamela giving it some, others follow suit. An unfit Winks was never gonna offer us that.

            • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:36 am

It is infectious, it boosts confidence, the pace and aggressive play that that Erik and Mousa offer is easily as compatible as the threat posed by the poo, we missed a trick there

      • Syd 17/09/2018 at 10:07 am

Glos, I watched the game as no doubt you did. I watched it again this morning (sadistical I know) but we made terrible passes when under no pressure at all. Rose too slow on the ball and ends up kicking it into the opposition, Dier was in fact dire or worse.
I dont understand really, Ericksen, Moura, Lamela, Son and Kane all want to attack and go forward. Absolutely held back by Mousa, Winks, Dier and Rose. Give these guys a go and we would be as fast as anybody.

        • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:11 am

        • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:15 am

It was simply sloppy, no excuses

        • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 10:19 am

I agree we made quite a few sloppy passes and Dier and Rose were as guilty as hell for playing their team mates into trouble. I just think the 112 misplaced passes was a high number because against a less pacey opposition they wouldn’t have got to cut out so many. Did you notice how many times the ball went loose and our players gave up the chase for it because Liverpool were so darn fast? They looked scared and then began backing off trying to win the 50-50s.

          • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:34 am

Whilst i agree with what you say about Liverpool I would suggest that the number of errors was simply unacceptable against any opposition, i am sure there will be repercussions and changes

          • Syd 17/09/2018 at 10:38 am

Well I do agree to some extent but the other thought I had was that the side (apart from Moura) looked exceptionally tired. But a hell of a lot of passes to the opposition truly under no pressure. it was disgraceful and I agree with El, it won’t matter who it is against we will get slaughtered. Mind you ‘Pool were ordinaire as well

            • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:42 am

              Just as well they were!

  • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 9:58 am

Poch and his coaching staff clearly had a plan to take on Liverpool, no doubt a priority was to contain and restrict their front three. However when so many your players make so many errors particularly passing the ball the opposition on far to many occasions tactics and formations become somewhat irrelevant, in the premier league you will get punished eventually.
i have little doubt that Poch and his team are as disappointed as we are with that performance and we will see changes.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:03 am

We invited them on to us & offerred no threat going forward. Was suicide!

      • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:06 am

& if you’re gonna push Rose & Trippier forward against dips, surely Sanchez starts in a back three with Topy & Verts???

        • Flat Oeuf 17/09/2018 at 10:22 am

This is exactly waht the problem was. Push Rose and Tripps forward and leave our 2 CBS defending against 3. Madness.

        • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 10:23 am

This was actually a game where Aurier would have made some kind of sense. He is fast and so is Sanchez.

  • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 9:59 am

+1. I’d much rather see us lose going for it, than watch the pile of crap I endured Saturday. Every season so far with Poch, there’s been at least two team selections where I’m left baffled, this was another one of those. Did he maybe have the Inter game in the back of his mind? Who knows. What I do know is, I don’t wanna see Winks, Dier & Dembele in the same midfield against any of the top prem sides, offers too little creativety.

    • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 10:28 am

Last year’s game against Poo we had Aurier at left back. He is an alternative in that position since Rose is now officially pance.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:30 am

I still think Rose will come good as it happens.

  • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:12 am

          • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 10:29 am

I agree about Gazzaniga. Time has come to make Vorm third choice I think. His presence in the box is nil.

            • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:40 am

Alli in place of Dier then!

      • Flat Oeuf 17/09/2018 at 10:28 am

I think we should do away with our Full Backs altogether. They’re two players wasted.

        Kane (maybe)

Dier acts basically as a CB/CDM. Davinson/Verts go out to snuff out any threats out wide, Dier slots in next to Toby.

It’s mad, but at least it would be entertaining.

        • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:30 am

          i like that too! 🙂

        • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:35 am

Lol, you’d have to sit Dele & Lamela deep with Dier, would see a few goals I recon!!

          • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:38 am

We would see a rapid change of pace and more direct football

          • Flat Oeuf 17/09/2018 at 11:30 am

No mate. I don’t want Dele and Lamela deep with Dier. I want Lamela and Eriksen coming to pick up the ball from him and pinging a pass or carrying it through midfield QUICKLY. I want Davinson, Toby and Verts carrying the ball forward and getting proper cover, like we used to when we played 3 at the back at The Lane. I want us to Dare.

            • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 11:45 am

Dele and Lamella deep with Dier?? Now that will start rumours!

I like that, be interesting to see Dele coming on in place of Dembele in the second half just to add a little spice and creativity

  • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 10:37 am

I can’t wait for a fully fit Wanyama, Dier needs a rest & he was keeping him out of the side two seasons ago.

  • Syd 17/09/2018 at 10:42 am

    Against Inter –
    Toby Sanchez Verts
    Wanyama Mousa Trips
    Lamela Ericksen Moura
    or similar

  • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 10:48 am

Ironic that of all their chances it was two messy goals lost it. Both would have been stopped by Lloris imo. Imagine that we’d played that badly and won 1-0.

The press would be slaughtering Klopp for all the possession and failing to score. And saying potential champions play badly but still find a way to win. Shame.

    • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 10:55 am

Great shame, after all of the moans and groans the game was decided by a penalty that wasn’t given

      • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 11:00 am

Yes, I had the impression the ref would need to see a flying forearm smash before giving us a penalty.

    • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 10:57 am

Liverpool weren’t that impressive when three on two, and four on three, and the times when Salah and Mané were in on goal and fluffed it. Such a shame the decisive moments were two fluff ups by Vorm.

      • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 11:09 am

      • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 11:13 am

Without wanting to be contrite or using the old hindsight advantage, had we not made so many unforced and sloppy errors we were no worse than the much vaunted Liverpool that the pundits are so in love with

        • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 11:14 am

For me we were terrible. Not fluid, they were. Yes we did get back into the game after they started like a house on fire and we were like wet noodles at home against what I thought at the time was a major rival. But…we didnt create anything and were sloppy in defence in our passing. Apart from that i guess we were ok

The excuse seemed to be after the game that we were tired but reading the blog here it seems we were unlucky.

we got what we deserved on the day however in the end it could easily have been a draw so yes I guess we were also unlucky

The score to me is secondary. What is important is to have confidence in your team in their efficacy, their ability to make things happen. They didnt. The ball bounces both ways. They started off much more confident than us. We were at home. Big match. We bottled it.Yes we could have won. But that would have meant 2 more shots than we had would have gone in

                    • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 12:07 pm

Gave the ball to them but they didn’t it back

and I admit I didnt watch the last 10 minutes. So my view may be askewed. But those that watched the last 10 minutes may have gotten also a different view of the whole game

                    • Flat Oeuf 17/09/2018 at 12:08 pm

If we’d played with half the urgency and belief as we did in those 10 mins, it might have been different. But we didnt. We played how we played, which was largely ineffective.

                    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 17/09/2018 at 12:15 pm

This is no small matter,Flat. We had lost against Waford and here was a chance to get out mojo back. So all the bullshit at home and we get on the field and sleep walked. While Liverpool seem to be where they left off and we were where we left off. Our psychology is terrible really for a team that was kind of considered a contender. The Man United game was like the Real Madrid game last season. It gave us a false view. If you are a winner you play like one when it matters.

                    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 17/09/2018 at 12:35 pm

Just one more. I think the one thing we could count on during the Poch tenure was our physicality . It was dominating teams for a long time. In the past two games, both of those two teams matched our physicality, infact so much that our wing backs couldnt breathe. and pressing etc and what is left after that is ball control. In the Watford game they got a couple of high ones right and we didnt. In the Liverpool game they were getting the ball to their forwards better than we were. (they werent great but did more than we did) Kane was pointless and Eriksen did nothing to make something happen. It left us with little.

                    • Elyid 17/09/2018 at 12:51 pm

I re-watched the game yesterday, and Poch and Harry can deny all they like, but Kane is simply not fit. He has looked unfit since his injury last season. He looked unfit throughout the World Cup. He has looked a passenger much of the time, and it’s a testament to how good a player he is that his scoring hasn’t dropped off too much. Kane was thoroughly managed by Liverpool. Poch’s game plan didn’t help, as he largely isolated, but that can’t hide the fact that Kane had 22 touches and completed just nine passes in 90 minutes.

Yet, there is absolutely no chance of Kane being rested anytime soon. I just hope he doesn’t pick up a new injury while trying to play his way through this one.

    • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 6:00 pm

Believe it or not, Aris is the beacon of sanity now. He was confident that over 38 games our quality will come through. A voice crying in the wilderness I fear.

          • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 17/09/2018 at 8:23 pm

He still thinks Lamela is sh*t though.

          • Flat Oeuf 17/09/2018 at 8:34 pm

I was actually talking about The Twitter. Aris does talk football sense, even if I don’t agree with all of it.

Great to see the properly coloured seating. Classy!

  • Superspoz 🏆 17/09/2018 at 7:24 pm

    Toby and trips haven’t travelled.

“It’s a technical decision. You can look it up in the dictionary. Tactical? That is on the pitch, although guess you could say this is tactical off of the pitch.

“You are clever enough to understand that this is my fifth season and I never punish players. The plan is to leave them there and use different players tomorrow. There’s nothing behind it, only that we’re playing with different players.

“Everyone is available to give their best. Of course we need to try to give our best. We have ahead of a lot of games. We came from difficult circumstances with the World Cup. We have a plan to give different players a rest in all competitions.”

    • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 8:07 pm

Kane needs to rest until Barca.

      • SeattleSpursGuy 17/09/2018 at 8:39 pm

When asked about Kane looking fatigued, Poch said:

“I’m not concerned, The reason is not tired or not tired, can rest or not rest. It’s a collective problem, not only one player. I think Harry is an easy target when he doesn’t score.”

Yet, Poch’s very first comment in his post match interview Saturday was to bring up the number of players we had going deep into the World Cup compared to Liverpool. The implication being we have tired or less match-ready players and this impacted our performance.

If there is a fatigue issue with Kane, it needs to be honestly addressed. I don’t want Harry out for longer than necessary, but magical thinking isn’t the way forward.

  • SeattleSpursGuy 17/09/2018 at 7:41 pm

Speaking in Milan on Monday, Pochettino said: ‘[Experience] is like a cow who sees a train every day for ten years crossing in front [of her], and if you ask the cow when the train is coming she’s not going to answer.’

    Uh….. what?

    • mystic arnold 17/09/2018 at 7:46 pm

Maybe that s an old Argentine saying

      • Sexy Beast 17/09/2018 at 7:47 pm

Hope so or it could be a bit of a “when the seagulls follow the trawler” moment!

        • McG ⚽⚽ 17/09/2018 at 7:50 pm

That’s what I was thinking lol

          • SeattleSpursGuy 17/09/2018 at 7:59 pm

Maybe Poch took a knock in training.

    • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 8:10 pm

It’s quite simple. Experience means nothing to the cow. Not a damn thing.
Poch was telling the assembled hacks to go **** themselves.

      • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 8:15 pm

The cow doesn’t know what the train is, what it does, where it’s come from, where it’s going to, why it’s there. The cow sees it and then it’s gone, and the cow is none the wiser. The cow has learnt nothing.

What that’s got to do with our players? I hope nothing.

        • SeattleSpursGuy 17/09/2018 at 8:50 pm

So, who is meant to be the cow? Poch? The players?

          • Fatty B 17/09/2018 at 9:37 pm

            Inter? Ermintrude?

Hope so or it could be a bit of a “when the seagulls follow the trawler” moment!

I never had a problem with Cantona’s seagull/trawler analogy. I understood what he meant about cynical journos following him around waiting for him to do /say something they could ridicule.

    • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 9:51 pm

What was the context of Poch’s cow remarks? Context is everything.

      • Fatty B 17/09/2018 at 9:57 pm

A journo, reading from a lollipop stick, asked Poch “What do you get if you cross a high-speed train with a cow?” The answer, of course, is ‘minced beef’. Poch didn’t get it because he’s foreign and they don’t put jokes on lollipop sticks in foreign places.

        • Fatty B 17/09/2018 at 9:59 pm

In some jurisdictions putting a lollipop stick in a foreign place is illegal, whether done as a joke or otherwise.

          • SeattleSpursGuy 17/09/2018 at 10:13 pm

Going through other reports, Poch followed up with:

“Experience, yes, of course experience (matters). But hunger, motivation, circumstance, everything, is so important. Many things in football are so important. We use too much talk of, ‘the experience is going to help next season’.”

Massive thumbs up? Wow, they are getting on well!

  • Chauvelin 17/09/2018 at 11:49 pm

Tomorrow I expect to see a massive improvement. It’s the Champions League, and the bloody pinnacle of the footballers’ ambitions. If they can’t stir themselves for the match there’s something wrong, and I think it might well be fatigue with certain players. Whatever Pochettino spins.

  • Carrigbawn 17/09/2018 at 11:51 pm

I have enjoyed reading the latest HH blog today. Especially the comments by “Is Gascoigne gonna have a crack?” and “Tappaspur”. I think they should both seek medical advice. They are a couple of crackpots! They are conspiracy theorists par excellence! Especially “Is Gascoigne gonna have a crack?” He’s paranoid; evidently everybody, including the media, “has it in” for Spurs.
The odds are against Spurs tomorrow if they played like they did on Saturday, but I live in hope.
On the face of it it’s a strange decision to leave Alderweireld and Trippier back in the UK. Even if Pochettino wasn’t going to start them you would have thought he would have taken them if only to have them on the bench? Is he unhappy with them?

    • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 12:08 am

Tappa writes about working on our new stadium as a welder; he seemed one of the more upbeat posters over there in recent months. But ‘Is Gazza ‘ is definitely a fully paid up member of the Doom and Gloom Society.

    • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 12:11 am

Toby and Trippier are jaded and desperately need to be rested is my guess. Davies and Aurier getting run outs probably, and Sanchez . Can’t afford to rest Vertonghen though as a left footed CB.

      • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 12:12 am

I really hope to see Gazzaniga in goal. Vorm disappointed badly.
