John P’s CL Bloeug

A debut from John P:

“Cast your minds back to 2010/11, In that CL draw we were in Pot 3, and drew the top-ranked side and reigning champs from Pot 1, Inter Milan. As if that were not bad enough, we also drew the top-ranked team from Pot 2: Werder Bremen. Some relief was obtained when we managed to also get Twente, In spite of the tough draw, we went on to win the group.

Our next attempt was 2016/17. The draw looked a lot kinder to us. Dortmund? Well we knew they were one of the top sides in Europe, but we also had Monaco, who Lamela had personally buried the previous season in the EL, and CSKA. Surely second place looked good! But no! We were relegated to the EL and then dumped out of that comp by Genk.

The following year, it was not so much a draw, as an invitation to a crucifixion. RM, top seeds and reigning champs, as well as Dortmund again. Oh well! Apoel should at least give us an entry into the EL again. But somehow, we failed to follow the script, and not only won our group but had the most points of any team from group games including 10 pts from BD and RM combined.

And so we turn to this years draw. Both Barca and Inter are the top rated sides from their pots with the blow only being softened by drawing PSV.

It may be that there is insufficient evidence to point to any real pattern, but i have noticed that the tougher the draw we get, the better we perform. Conversely, an easy draw tends to make fools of us.

Maybe this was the best possible draw for us?”

    Quality article!

The thing is are we the final article?
We are getting there and while we are legends in our own minds we still have to prove ourselves so why not do it against quality teams.
We did beat RM and Borrussia and now it’s no less formidable but to be honest I don’t care about pots as much as quality. I think if you have the quality and fight you have a chance.
To see who we truly are it’s not good enough to beat RM once. We have to take them all on.
Barça is a great team but we can beat them. Inter and PSV won’t be easy but we have to beat them.
We have to target all wins at home and mixtures of wins and ties away.
The last game game is Barça away and we definately don’t want to be in the position of having to win there.
We can’t start slow as the first two games are critical.
On Sept 18th we have to start the game really focused and really get a good result at Inter that will give us confidence vrs Barça at home.
    Its war.
Im sure Poch now things this way.
We need to respect ourselves more than we respect them.

Reading the recent posts about the film ‘In Bruges’, I really thought it was an omen about getting them in the draw. A bit of a shame we got Inter instead, but no doubt we’re as much of a fear to them as they are to us.

    • Chauvelin 31/08/2018 at 3:57 pm

Monaco were the pot four team but had quality like
Falcao, Moutinho, Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Fabinho, Bakayoko, Lemar. Mbappe couldn’t even get on the pitch!
They were the dark horse team. Remember CSKA were the pot One team and they trailed in fourth place.

Watford Have got off to a great start so far this season. Hopefully playing them now is good for us as we should be expecting them to play well and won’t get caught by surprise.

  • John Peddubriwny 31/08/2018 at 4:10 pm

@Chauvelin: CSKA was an anomaly brought about by allocating Pot 1 status to the Champs of the highest rated leagues based on UEFA coefficients. That’s how Leicester also got a Pot 1 draw. That CSKA finished last was no surprise. I think the same can be applied to Lokomotiv this year. The team from Pot 3 us probably thinking that they ave an excellent chance of the group stages, and the team from pot 4 is probably expecting to make the EL.

    • Chauvelin 31/08/2018 at 4:20 pm

This is true. I was fully expecting Liverpool to get the Lokomotiv/Porto group so was pleased they are up against PSG. Be interesting to see if they keep Neymar and Mbappe in view of FFP.

  • John Peddubriwny 31/08/2018 at 4:50 pm

Stat attack: Just before the started SSN published an article about what each PL team does best. It turned out that our strength was defending a lead. According to SSN, last season, in every game where we scored first (25) we either won or drew the game and our final record was P 25 W23 D2 L0 which gave us 71 of our 77 points. We have continued the trend this season with three straight wins.

I looked a bit further into this, and it turns out that the run started following the loss to Cheatski at The Fridge in Nov 2016, and we are currently on a run of 45 games (W43 D2) since then. It seems that all we need to do to win the PL is score first.

OTOH, all three Cup games that we lost last season, were after we scored first.

    Hmmmm?

    • John Peddubriwny 31/08/2018 at 4:51 pm

      Just before the SEASON started….

    • Chauvelin 31/08/2018 at 4:59 pm

Something I have speculated over in my recent idle moments is that we appear to have reversed our schtick. We were once known as a cup winning side, good enough to win any one off game, but without the consistency to mount a season long challenge for the title.

Now we look as if we can keep up to a very good standard for the ‘bread and butter’ league chase throughout the season, but have lost a little oomph to win specific cup games.

      Anyone else see this?

    • Flat Oeuf 31/08/2018 at 5:02 pm

Those are interesting stats actually. I think Poch has worked to make us less gung-ho when we’re in front. I remember calling out for him to shore things up at times, none more so than against Chelsea in the FA Cup SF and Juve in the CL R16. We need to continue to learn to close out games, and he has certainly started to make some substitutions which demonstrate that he understands that we’ve been too open at times at crucial points in games, to our detriment.

Having said that I was talking about shutting up shop vs Yanited the other day during the game and we went and scored another.

      • Chauvelin 31/08/2018 at 5:07 pm

Bloody typical. Don’t worry, we’ll knock getting those ‘cushioning’ goals out of Lucas, and then we can get back to enjoy desperately hanging on to a one goal lead for half an hour.

Do you mean the specific cup games are the ones we lose? Do we win any specific cup games?

    • Chauvelin 31/08/2018 at 5:35 pm

We were known as cup specialists. Good at making a big effort to win one off matches, but lacking in the nine month long league campaign. Saying that, we faded in all competitions for some reason when the Premier League started. Whether this was down to Irving Scholar’s mismanagement or some other malaise I can’t say. But after the 1991 FA Cup cup triumph we slipped into a decade long mediocrity. Our level was scrapping it out with the likes of Robbie Savage’s Leicester City.

      • Shelfy 31/08/2018 at 5:40 pm

We often started well and got also good results at the end of the season (the business end of the FA cup) but in the middle we were naff. I think the heavy muddy winter pitches screwed us up. We played fancy Dan footy which was only effective on good pitches. Today all the PL pitches are a much higher standard all season.

        • Ronwol196061 31/08/2018 at 5:45 pm

We have solid players now. I think their confidence is growing and it will become inherent soon.. At that time they will decide how much they will push it in cup games.
It becomes infectious just like the negative can. We are on the upswing

  • Shelfy 31/08/2018 at 5:36 pm

So far fairly quiet on the transfer window deadline day in Europe as far as we are concerned.
Plenty of people with egg on faces if Toby, Danny and Moussa Dembele don’t move on in the next few hours.

    • Chauvelin 31/08/2018 at 5:40 pm

We were discussing this at the end of the PL window and saying no one coming in wasn’t a concern if we kept Toby and Mousa. I was ambivalent about Rose.

      • Shelfy 31/08/2018 at 6:08 pm

We don’t have a lot of depth at LB if Rose goes assuming we want to keep our best left sided CB playing as CB

I think it’s case by case.
Personally it’s difficult assess what we would neeto do. Sometimes it’s an easy decision. Putting on Dembele at 60.mins say.
If taking off Dembele, we don’t have so many pure two way players so if we are 2 down bringing a more forward type is easy.
1 up its not as easy.

    • Chauvelin 31/08/2018 at 5:53 pm

The old adage is attack is the best form of defence. How many times have clubs sat back and paid the price? Once you switch into a defensive mode it’s very difficult to go back up through the gears. We must learn how to go from a press to a flexible counter attacking game.

@Elyid: I too get very nervous at 2-0 up. I think to myself “We need one more to kill it off”. Then we get the goal, and now I’m thinking, “I hope they don’t score now. If they pull one back, they will only be two behind and they might think they can get something from this”.

The ghost of Spursy still haunts me.

Old news now I know; but what a fantastic draw! It’s why you want to qualify for CL. Who have Chelsea got when we’re playing Barca I wonder?

    • Flat Oeuf 01/09/2018 at 7:13 am

Ar53nal have got Qarabag, which is nice. They have to do some proper travelling for all 3 of their away ties, one of which is just before the NLD at the Emptycrates.

I’m not really into the pre-gloat as history shows it can bite you on the backside, but their EL group was particularly unkind on that front.

      • Matt 01/09/2018 at 8:33 am

I’m going to indulge myself in a small pre gloat. I don’t even know where Quarabag is. I definitely know where Milan and Barcelona are.

        • Bruxie 01/09/2018 at 8:36 am

          From BBC’s Gossip…
“Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 29, may be unable to play for the Gunners when they face Qarabag FK in the Europa League because of political unrest between Armenia and Azerbaijan. (Mirror)”.

        • John Peddubriwny 01/09/2018 at 8:41 am

Qarabag is in Azerbaijan. We played them in the EL a few years back. They play in a stadium named after their most famous sportsman Tofik Abhramov. His greatest claim to fame is that he was the “Russian” linesman who awarded “that goal” in the 1966 WC final.

          • Matt 01/09/2018 at 8:47 am

Thanks John. Ah yes, I now recall those days playing in the EC. Best leave that to Arsenal and Chelsea these days…

            • John Peddubriwny 01/09/2018 at 9:25 am

@Matt: I really thought I would enjoy gloating over both Arse and Cheatski being in the EL, but now that the time has arrived I simply can’t be bothered to define our success by the failure of others.

      • John Peddubriwny 01/09/2018 at 8:49 am

@Flatty: Don’t know if you recall when we played them, but the game kicked off at 10.00 pm local time so that it could be shown on TV at 6 pm UK time. Our team arrived back in London around breakfast time on the Friday, and had to play Cheatski in the lunchtime game the following day. This was around about the time when Joke was suggesting that the PL were deliberately rigging the fixture list to disadvantage Cheatski.

        • Sexy Beast 01/09/2018 at 8:52 am

That’s probably because the Armenians levelled the city where they played. This is Agdam where Qarabag originated from.

A US billion is the commonly accepted number nowadays which is 1,000,000,000.
The old UK billion was a thousand times larger 1,000,000,000,000 for some reason. In other words a million millions. Likewise a trillion was a million million millions.

Massive game this afternoon. Burry Port are at home to Tumble in what could well determine which of us joins Ammanford Town in being relegated from Division 1.

We’re currently second from bottom, four points behind today’s opponents, but this is their last game of the season whereas we still have two more after this. A 10-4* victory today would settle it, but defeat of any kind would leave us needing to get a result in either (or both) of our last two games (which are both away against champions-elect Loughor (pronounced Lucker) and an in-form Pontarddulais (pronounced Ponta-dill-is).

    Roll-off is at 2.30.

    BIOYTC

    http://www.ccba.moonfruit.com/league-table/4567519070

    * There are 14 points up for grabs in a game; two for each winning rink and then six more for whichever team manages to accrue the greatest number of shots overall.

    • Chauvelin 01/09/2018 at 9:33 am

No chance of you getting transferred to Loughor?

      • UnkleTaff 01/09/2018 at 9:39 am

Wouldn’t want to even if I could. They’re not a very pleasant bunch.

Incidentally, Pontarddulais were in the Premier League last year. When I asked one of their players how come they were struggling so much in a poorer division (they were below us at the time we played them) he said that three of their best players died over the winter.

Pochettino never has to worry about this sort of stuff.

          • UnkleTaff 01/09/2018 at 9:50 am

At least this season Chelsea have to contend with the Europa. I have no doubt that their title winning season was greatly assisted by having no European distractions.

    • John Peddubriwny 01/09/2018 at 10:50 am

I think the real reason for Cheatski’s success was that the team that Conte inherited, was pretty much the team that had run away with the league two seasons earlier, and then went on strike under Joke. They did more or less the same thing under AVB.

I think there is something despicable about players who decide that they want rid of the manager, and are prepared to let the fans down to suit their agenda.
