Is the Future Bright or Dystopian Black?

I came across this article recently concerning the future of football and with the imminent move by La Liga to host one match a year in America and huge conglomerates like Amazon and Facebook beginning to jostle to get some of the action the future landscape it seems is likely to change significantly in the coming years. According to the article the £1 billion yearly turnover is more than likely by 2030 for the big boys. This would almost certainly mean the £1 million per week wage would not be far behind.
The European Superleague still rears its head from time to time. Is it inevitable or just a figmentary (is that word real or a figment of my imagination? ) tool that will only ever be used to scare UEFA?
On the advertising front the perimeter advertising, with future new technology just around the corner, will be country specific irrespective of what country your viewing the match from. For example if you’re viewing from India it will be Indian sponsors showing, viewing from the UK, UK sponsors etc. Personally I find perimeter advertising an affront to my enjoyment of the beautiful game but I can see the day when any delay in the game, say for an injury, will produce advertising graphics displayed on the pitch, as they do to show the scores in Rugby and NFL.
In terms of TV viewing I think the future is more likely to be internet based rather than supplied by the current major TV companies, Sky, BT etc. Recently a new Internet based company, Eleven TV, streamed the PGA championship (one of the Majors) for free on Facebook which was the only way UK viewers could see it. This was a freeby to encourage sign up to the service for a monthly /annual fee but inevitably that will cost in the future I suspect. I can see companies like this plus Amazon and possibly Facebook and even Google carving up the PL match rights possibly taking the majority of the rights away from Sky and BT. Of course illegal streaming will probably always be there but legally viewing from a couple of TV stations as at present looks likely to be a thing of the past.
There’s a lot more in the article here: if you fancy a browse however it’s heavily opined by the infamous Ridsdale so his input should, I suggest, be taken with a pinch of salt.
So how do you see the future of the glorious game? Are you positive and see the increase in revenue, wages as a good thing or do you wish for the days when players worked in’t mines and were only allowed up for matches at weekends?

  • Chauvelin 26/08/2018 at 6:05 pm

Why do you mean by perimeter advertising in this context?

Its more of a event to go.
Most people watch the games on TV
There are something like 20 games a season and half of them in another state.

Footie is going to change. Commercialism will be King.
I cant see it going back.
Just like their are niche restaurants and nice boutiques maybe the lower divisions will offer an opening for the retro flat cap supporter but I can’t see the Pl going back.

    • Chauvelin 26/08/2018 at 7:06 pm

I blame William the Conqueror. He transformed our country from tribal society surmounted by a chieftain (the Scottish clan was a relic of this) to a system of feudal servitude in which the people were ‘possessions’. Football fans are now more like the latter than the former, as once was maybe partly true.
The introduction of a foreign ruling class from France, Flanders and Normandy is why the English class system has been so persistent. It really was us and them. Only three families in England can trace their roots to pre-Conquest days, the Swintons, Berkeleys and the Ardens. The rest of the gentry are invaders.

I can see fans complaining in other countries as there are less competitive teams. Now the competition and quality is up.

  • TCY 26/08/2018 at 7:30 pm

I’ve long thought that the domination of the big six in the PL would be the death of things in the long run. Boredom to win. So it would be good for a Leicester or an Everton to challenge on a more regular basis.

But who knows? Our local 2d division FC Cincinnati draws SRO crowds and all their games our televised. Last night from Tampa. The universal nature of things is strong. I’ve never seen such interest. Don’t tell H Hatespur I passed a kid in a 20 Alli official jersey this morning. Not sure how the international interest will play out. Total corruption of the game I guess.

Let’s hope not. Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle were both notorious booze hounds and the Babe a gash hound to boot. Many of our ancestral Spurs legends were not exactly Boy Scout material.

When Pres. Lincoln was told US Grant was a juicer, he told the complainers to find out his favorite label and send each of the generals a case. Methinks this was not the first time Hugo was out sampling the London waters of an evening.

  • MiT 26/08/2018 at 7:33 pm

    Very nice read, Andy.

I am a patron of the old ways, and am resistant to too much technology, especially when the technology is only there for the easy button. Two examples: we have fewer and fewer induvuduals who can drive a manual transmission anymore, yet driving with a manual is much of what keeps us in tune with our machine. Now we have auto txm and no gauges. Another example is texting. Generations are now being raised with no skill for face to face relationship or diplomacy, and stunted emotional growth due to having no understanding of real humanity as opposed to virtual.

Thus, to your questions, it’s all doomed, but they will wait until our generation is too old to have any more effect.

    Cheers, all, Happy Sunday.

    • MiT 26/08/2018 at 7:37 pm

      Induvuduals… heh 🙂

Texting gives me irritable vowel syndrome.

Looxury! I didnt have a phone at home when I was 17 -18 so I walked a mile or two away on a sunday to see if my friend was in and then we both walked another few miles to see if my other friend before we got together with a bunch of mates. It was simple but limiting. But I know what you mean. When the bloke invented the wheel there must have been a bunch of people that were dead against it.

      • Chauvelin 26/08/2018 at 8:44 pm

My dad had the first phone in our road. The neighbours would knock on the door and ask to use it, and I used to run messages up and down the street if they got a return call.

      • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 26/08/2018 at 8:53 pm

When I started work at 16 in the bank I’d never used a phone in my life, parents or mates never had one. After 6 months there occurred, even after all this time, one of the most embarrassing moments of my simple existence. My supervisor thought I should phone a customer to get used to using a phone. It was the old round dialling jobby. I picked it up and tried to dial, hands shaking. Couldn’t get it to work so turned to my supervisor, nice lady, and said I thought it was broken. She never raised as much as an eyebrow and quietly said, try turning the dial the other way. Nearly died on the spot.

  • Matt 26/08/2018 at 8:28 pm

It’s easy to forget that footy coverage was a bit crap. Pitches were too and kicking the sh@t out of good players meant Vinny Jones was viewed as a good thing. Blogs like this didn’t exist. Stadiums were generally a bit kak: It’ll be a masssive business but it’ll still be footy; only better!

And we should play Hugo as Captain. He was an idiot but loyalty cuts both ways; he could have joined some tasty clubs. I think Poch values that.

    And we’ll beat MUFC .

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 26/08/2018 at 8:34 pm

I mean we all see great changes in everything around us.. Some good and some bad but I can’t believe that the little tea place in the east stand selling stale cheese sandwiches anyone would really want back. These are dreams for people of times that weren’t.
My dad talked about the war and he was in the Ardennes etc and this and that. But was it good. Really?

      • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 26/08/2018 at 9:10 pm

Good point Ron, I’m in my 60’s but I don’t consider things were better years ago or in my youth, other than my health/fitness. Things such as living standards, opportunities to enjoy life are far better nowadays and that’s not just because I’ve retired.

        • Chauvelin 26/08/2018 at 9:29 pm

Having survived a hairy tube journey (Seven Sisters to East Putney – through the heartland of their home turf) with running battles with Chelsea fans back in the mid 70s, things are much much better in some respects such as hooliganism, but with hyper commercialism, much much worse in others.

        • Ronwol196061 26/08/2018 at 10:17 pm

I agree.. We lived in the East End originally. Not too many had phones in the mid sixties. My dad didn’t have a car. I got one(it was an F registration I think) must have been 18 or 19
We had a little bit of money but not a lot.
But I always looked to the future and it was good. Yes had its dips. Life’s not perfect but I like progress.
We are living longer. 71 now but my grandparents that survived till their sixties struggled more as older people and I think it’s better now.
Tottenham was great in the 60’s
Now we on the border of greatness. We will be?
          There are no guarantees.
But positivity works better than negativity.

  • Chauvelin 26/08/2018 at 8:38 pm

    • Ronwol196061 26/08/2018 at 8:57 pm

Infact a premier team could help support a smaller team and the whole feeling there could develop into a more earthy situation etc. Even wear similar colours etc

  • Syd 27/08/2018 at 1:26 am

Great article and thought provoking. You nastard (that’s like a nasty bastard)!

I have thought for a long time, not only football but all major sports are now so subject to the dollar that soon we will be heading down the asia route where clubs are owned and named after companies and as such those companies especially if in the same industry will spend endless amounts to be No. 1. For instance Samsung Spurs which would make you all squirm…First of all ‘Samsung Stadium’ then……..
In Australia our biggest supplier of pay TV is Foxtel. They are running out of top notch sports to fill the airwaves, so we get a lot of repeats and what’s worse they are now promoting our physical sports like Australian Rules (Aussie Rules or AFL as we call it), rugby union and cricket being played by the softer gender. It’s horrible but the TV shorts and marketing make it seem we are getting good value for money, however in reality it’s horrible (from a sports lovers perspective).
Marketing and the dollar is where we are sadly heading, nothing is more important and for the best example…I give you……….LINGERIE FOOTBALL IN AMERICA/CANADA.
That’s not even about Sport anymore…but that will sell so we meet in the board rooms and wait for executives to come up with ideas on how to purge those most sacred sports into the shape of a ‘$’.

    • Sniper 27/08/2018 at 2:49 am

Nothing worse than the cricket going to The Bunker to find out if there is a wicket or not and seeing a big bucket of KFC. It’s just ridiculous

          Big bucket of KFC? Mmmmmm.

      Lingerie Soccer? Mmmm, gibber, drool…

  • Sniper 27/08/2018 at 2:46 am

    Lovely post rAndy.
It takes me back (it seems to happen more by the day!) to the days of the occasional board along the touchline advertising Old Holborn, or Bovril.
And the half-time score boards you would get around the half way line that cross referenced to each game in the match day programme…
It will all end up with a European super league. The top (wealthiest) twenty clubs around England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France all playing each other through a season. Then ruined by top eight play-offs home and away, quarter and semi finals etc.
If the Yanks get their shit together (and cheque books out) we end up with a World League. And home and away fixtures all over. Players on half a million a match.
It all gets a bit depressing and I hope I don’t live to see it.
Bring back the days of football on mud, in the snow, of Ronnie Radford, giant killing, Grandstand all day Saturdays, Eddie Waring and deserted streets on cup final days or England v Scotland.

What I suspect most of them won’t be doing is pointing out that since Utd’s last win at White Hart Lane (back in March 2012) we’ve actually managed to win twice at Old Trafford (in September 2012 and again January 2014).

Let’s see if they ‘remember’ this fact for the return fixture.

    • Danspurs 27/08/2018 at 9:27 am

Good points, Unk. It always makes me feel like I’ve slipped into an alternative reality whenever I dwell on the fact Sherwood was the manager for one of those. Until I remember it was against moyes.

  • Danspurs 27/08/2018 at 9:32 am

Great article Andy. Thanks for posting. I think Ron’s points up above about the prem attracting too much money to temp teams to leave it make a lot of sense. I wonder if we’ll end up with the big prem teams having a European squad and a prem squad. Shudder. Only saving grace is that we’re in that bracket again. Thank God for Enic 😂

Equaliser! Good goal. S. Korea deserve to win this.

It’s unreal to see the two sets of fans, in Malaysia, being serenaded by a mariachi band in sombreros.

              • Chauvelin 27/08/2018 at 11:42 am

      North Korea. Just fancy.

  • UnkleTaff 27/08/2018 at 12:45 pm

…and you really wouldn’t want to be putting your mortgage on any of those South Korean players — Sonny included — winning a 50/50 challenge.

      Absolutely not.

  • Chauvelin 27/08/2018 at 1:02 pm

‘Hwang Ui-jo scored a hat-trick for South Korea U23 in the match. While Hwang Hee-Chan was the hero for Tottenham scoring the winner in the 117th minute.’

Who knew Spurs had TWO South Koreans?

    Great journalism. 😕

  • UnkleTaff 27/08/2018 at 1:03 pm

That’s actually not a bad result for Korea, given that up until today Uzbekistan had won all their games so far in the tournament without conceding a single goal.

    • Chauvelin 27/08/2018 at 1:05 pm

The Uzbeks brought it on themselves by trying to see out the last half hour instead of playing.

      • Chauvelin 27/08/2018 at 1:05 pm
