Inter away

I don’t do predictions.  I’ve got a weird *It’ll jinx us* thing if I say we’re going to win…and I can’t bring myself to say we’re going to lose, or even draw.

As per all my rantings about the Watford and Liverpool games, I just want to see us pick it up A LOT.  This possession-based filopastry is killing our attacking intent.  What I’m witnessing over and again is that when we have possession in our half or the first 10m of the oppo’s half, all our Full backs, AMs and Kaneinho are in position, waiting for the ball to come forward or wide.  I think we’re meant to play it into feet and then have runners going past the ball to receive a clever flick or one-two but, more often than not, there’s nobody running past and/or the flick gets cut out.

What I see other teams do is some slick inter-passing at pace…cutting through midfields and defences.  We’re like Subbuteo players in comparison.

So are we going to be experimental and have our way with Inter, or are they going to royally……it doesn’t bear thinking about.

Team to play Inter: Vorm, Aurier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Dembele, Lamela, Eriksen, Son, Kane

Subs: Gazzaniga, Rose, Walker-Peters, Wanyama, Winks, Lucas, Llorente

The rot started when tripps and toby were left behind. continued when we took our feet off the pedal by removing pamela and gained momentum when arry came off as now inter didnt have to mark him and could stream forward in droves I let our a groan of knowing that we had thrown it with the last sub, handed to them on a plate a great invitation for them to batter us.We changed the game for them. Poch has gone rogue.

      You wuz right Bruxie.

Quite clearly Spurs can’t shut up shop and not going forwards for 94 minutes may have cost us CL knock out stsge qualification.

      • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 7:57 pm

Well tonight it was on the pitch until he took off Lamela and Kane. Replacing them with Winks and Rose? WTF?

      • stevo1987 18/09/2018 at 7:57 pm

Correct, but he should. He doesn’t because he keeps chopping and changing depending on who we are playing. He should be more concerned about how we play not the opponent.

        • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 8:00 pm

          Down to you Mr Manager.

Yup, was thinking that it could turn into a dodgy patch after Sunday

  • Caspurs 18/09/2018 at 7:56 pm

Winks for Lamela at a time when we could have sealed the win, yet Poch brings on an out of form Winks and we barely threatened afterwards. Poch needs to consider his role in tonights result, rather than worry about cows watching trains.

    • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 7:59 pm

Tonight Poch showed us he is an effing Guernsey milker.

      • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 8:08 pm

  • SeattleSpursGuy 18/09/2018 at 8:02 pm

OK, so the way the club was spinning our buying no one in the summer was we had the advantage of having a settled squad of players that Poch trusts, all of whom know their job in the team.

Does it look like it? It looks very much like Poch doesn’t know his best XI, or the best tactics for them. And there have been way too many sub-par individual performances.

Maybe I’m over-reacting, but things seem decidedly ‘off’ at the moment

    • McG ⚽⚽ 18/09/2018 at 8:04 pm

We were playing great second half til Poch meddled, he’s to blame here.

      • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 8:05 pm

Absolutely. Did anyone know what formation we had after the substitutions? Talk about running scared.

      • stevo1987 18/09/2018 at 8:08 pm

Correct, Poch out. We have an excellent squad but the manager seems out of his depth now.

        • Caspurs 18/09/2018 at 8:09 pm

          I think that’s a tad hasty.

        • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 18/09/2018 at 8:09 pm

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 18/09/2018 at 8:05 pm

Tend to agree SSG, Poch looked decidedly irritated the whole match. Summats up.

      • Caspurs 18/09/2018 at 8:08 pm

Poch hasn’t been his usual calm self all season, which has led me to wonder if all is really tickety-boo behind the scenes.

        • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 8:13 pm

It’s time for big Danny to put his arm around Mauricio and cuddle him.

    • stevo1987 18/09/2018 at 8:06 pm

As I said Poch is f’king it up. Keeps chopping and changing. Pick a team and stick with it for a while.

    Are we playing Zone?

    • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 8:10 pm

Who knows Ron? The subs just messed everything up, the play, the rhythm, the formation, probably who was marking whom. He confused everything.

  • ronwol196061 18/09/2018 at 8:09 pm

    I had faith.

  • stevo1987 18/09/2018 at 8:09 pm

      Yellow card for time wasting!!!

    • Chauvelin 18/09/2018 at 8:11 pm

It is. I like the guy but he has made some gaffs and keeps on making them. Did he think taking off Kane for Rose was wise? Left us unable to hold the ball up front.

You can’t ‘play out’ 15 mins + injury time of a game against a side with quality in it when you’re only 1 goal up. It’s just inviting them to score. We stopped trying to threaten and we underestimated them. The sibstitution compounded what was already happening on the pitch. Sucker punched.

Say what you like, Poch’s subs cost us the win.

  • Northern Spur 18/09/2018 at 8:51 pm

I didn’t see the game but followed it on t’interweb. I sensed we’d be in trouble with our defensive substitutions + I also thought the continuing lack of a true on-field leader will be our downfall in future big games, too.

    • Superspoz 🏆 18/09/2018 at 9:00 pm

We nearly had it. They were worst then us. We had the better chances. I can accept the worldie but the one from the set piece, ANOTHER set piece ffs is hard to take.

Just stop fielding Winks Dier & Dembele at the same time. Not saying this is Winks fault either, but you hand the front foot to the opposition when we do this, it’s so blatently obvious too.

                    • AntSpurs 18/09/2018 at 10:35 pm

Yeah I think Lamela was tired , he worked tiresly as usual but as Winks not match fit. We felt comfortable to let them come onto us and I thought we looked sured enough to hold them out. This was the opposite to the approach at Watford where we tried to starve them higher up the pitch. With the 3 in the middle we should be able to contain which is what I thought Poch was doing looking for a draw against Pool. However the players aren’t mentally or physically upto it at the moment. We’re always slow starters so well find out groove but we have not learnt how to play this game yet.

I hope the hysteria is over. We lost, get over it. The sun comes up tomorrow. We are not dead.

  • Carrigbawn 18/09/2018 at 11:32 pm

So we lost. So what? It’s not the end of the world. It’s not life & death ffs. Fan(antic)s have no responsibility. They are always right because when they give their opinions it’s with the benefit of hindsight. We were the better side tonight. However Inter got the rub of the green. I reckon 9 times out of 10 Icardi’s wonder strike would have sailed over the crossbar or gone wide of the post. Tonight it went in. Our luck was out. The 2nd goal? We can’t defend crosses! With the benefit of hindsight (something the fan(atic)s posting on here are blessed with!) Pochettino shouldn’t have taken Kane off as he is good in the air defensively, something the subs, Winks & Moura are poor at (the fact they are midgets doesn’t help!)

I can see Pochettino getting the sack if this bad run continues. Obviously he’s under enormous pressure and is very rattled (he’s behaving irrationally) and he doesn’t want to lose his £8m a year job, though he will have to be compensated (I doubt if Levy failed to put a limit on his compensation into his new contract so he wont get his £45m 5 year contract paid up in full). Will this bad run continue? Who can be certain though I think it unlikely. Still I’m not worried. I like to see Spurs win, but it’s not life and death as with some Spurs fan(atic)s. I wont have a sleepless night, like some on here, just because we lost. It’s only a football match! You can’t win them all! 🙂

    • Hartley 19/09/2018 at 12:17 am

I’ll sleep tonight but you’re wrong. Inter played the full 90 minutes and won, we didn’t and we lost. Fuck all to do with wonder strikes or rub of the green and more about application and belief.

        this ^

    • Syd 19/09/2018 at 1:31 am

I don’t entirely disagree with you but I can tell you Moura is pretty good in the air. Winks not so much. I can’t understand the Winks substitution. Oh well, he might be better for the experience.
Mind you the ball went to Dier and Davies and neither got off the ground and appeared to be marking each other and not the opposition.

  • TCY 19/09/2018 at 12:24 am

Did not see the game so can’t say much. However the recent formations are obviously not working. And suddenly we can’t defend set pieces worth a damn.

Better coaching should take care of both those.

And whatever is going on at midfield isn’t working either.

Still early doors. All is not lost—yet.

  • Syd 19/09/2018 at 12:28 am

The rot started when tripps and toby were left behind. continued when we took our feet off the pedal by removing pamela and gained momentum when arry came off as now inter didnt have to mark him and could stream forward in droves I let our a groan of knowing that we had thrown it with the last sub, handed to them on a plate a great invitation for them to batter us.We changed the game for them. Poch has gone rogue.

It had nothing to do with TRips or Toby. Ok, we are better for having them on the pitch, but the side we put on the pitch should have won. We simply cannot defend set pieces very well

  • Flat Oeuf 19/09/2018 at 4:24 am

Yurp. Brighton, Huddersfield and Cardiff next up in the league. Nine points from that lot would see us nicely back on track.

  • UnkleTaff 19/09/2018 at 10:17 am

It’s at times like this you find out what you’re really made of. Life’s easy when everything is going according to plan.

I’m convinced we’ll survive this blip (for that’s all it is) and be stronger for the experience.

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 19/09/2018 at 10:48 am

I’m tending towards that belief as well. However this is new territory for Poch so can’t say I’m 100‰ confident on the basis it’s not happened before. In fact it all feels a bit pre-Pochified at the moment. Yesterday reminded me of us before Poch came in, very Spursy.
All teams go through a bad run of form which can last a few games or a season and occasionally even longer. The top teams certainly do but they will usually win something in the good times. Im betting that the blips over and the good times are gonna roll again. Fingers crossed 🤞

      • 89Spurs 👁 19/09/2018 at 10:55 am

I think that if the squad, are as one, then it’s easier to play through it, and come out a better side in the end. Then the results should flow.
The last thing we need is a pessimistic attitude!

      • UnkleTaff 19/09/2018 at 10:57 am

It’s a sad comment on modern football that whenever teams do go through a rough period these days the manager invariably gets the boot. Getting rid of Pochettino now would, I fear, do irreparable damage to the club. Missing out on a top-four place this season (not that I think for a moment this will happen) would be unfortunate, but sacking the best coach we’ve had in ages would be a disaster.

        • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 11:01 am

A tad premature! And not something Daniel would do in the midst of the stadium saga, the last thing he needs is more uncertainty.

  • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 10:59 am

My worry is that Pochettino came out after the United victory and more or less said the result flattered Spurs, we weren’t that good, we were fortunate they didn’t take their chances, we needed to improve etc etc.

It was like he was a third party, analysing the team from the outside, almost like a pundit. As if he wasn’t integrally involved in the team ethos, was having some kind of ‘out of body experience’. Almost like he couldn’t affect the way things were going, other than to voice his concerns publicity and hope they would be taken onboard. By whom?

It was very strange, and none of his press utterings since give me confidence he has a handle on things.

Is Pochettino having his midlife crisis?

  • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 19/09/2018 at 11:03 am

I don’t get the feeling that the squad aren’t as one. Poch on the other hand seems to be far more defensive and exasperated than I’ve seen him before. Maybe he’s different behind the scenes with the players and maybe he’s trying the Moanhino/Fergy tactic of they’re all agin us, it’s us against the world boys. Or maybe he feels the players have taken advantage of his happy, smiling demeanour and he’s having to rattle their cages. I dunno but I do trust him to sort it out.

    • Chauvelin 19/09/2018 at 11:16 am

It’s an odd and disturbing thing that for once, Pochettino isn’t expressing how together and happy everyone is. Previously he’s been very very calm, but not anymore.
