Happy Favver’s Day

Solo Mackay

Dads, eh?

We’ve all had at least one. I had several, none of them much cop if I’m truthful. Now a stepdad to 3 and dad to 1, and also to this young pup, it’s pretty much the toughest but most worth it job I’ve had.

Anyways, wherever you are and however you’re spending today (watching football with your favourite food and booze, I hope), let me wish you a good day with some happy memories from the past and good times in the present.

You’re all good eggs from my perspective.

That’s one handsome hound Flatster. They usually reckon a dog looks like their owner or is it other way round?

    • Flat Oeuf 17/06/2018 at 10:35 am

Don’t know about looks but he’s a greedy little blighter.

      • UnkleTaff 17/06/2018 at 10:38 am

…and still, somehow, capable of producing twice as much out the other end, I’ll wager.

        • Flat Oeuf 17/06/2018 at 10:43 am

Well so far he’s been on raw meat and vegetables and it’s been ok to be fair. In terms of quality, anyway.

My latest recruit is due to be spayed tomorrow.

It’s one thing to adopt a dog that’s already been done, it’s something else entirely to have it done on your watch.

    🙁

I done meself, on me own watch

      Tough decision, mate.

      • UnkleTaff 17/06/2018 at 11:01 am

Got to be done. It was a stipulation of the rescue centre I got her from but I’d have got it done anyway even if it hadn’t been.

Only decision was, do I wait for her to have a season or not?

Having two adult (albeit neutered) dogs in the house already swayed the decision for me.

I can’t recall the name of the condition (only relates to bitches), but it’s not a bad thing to get a bitch spayed, as they can get a fatal infection which I wasn’t aware of until recently.

James Maddison to Southampton?! Managed by Hughes?! Another players career ruined..

    • UnkleTaff 17/06/2018 at 11:24 am

I know. You’d think with a player that good a better team would have come in for him.

      😉

    • UnkleTaff 17/06/2018 at 11:26 am

Has it been confirmed? Last I saw Norwich had given Southampton permission to talk to him.

You’d have to think that if Southampton were the best offer on the table he might be better off sticking with Norwich for another year.

      • Caspurs 17/06/2018 at 11:47 am

Irrespective of which player we prefer, I wouldn’t say playing for Hughes was a wise move, we’ll see (if it happens). Another reason why Spurs shouldn’t rule themselves out is the need for homegrown players. If Villa are asking for a stupidly high fee for Grealish, then Maddison would represent an equally good alternative for less money.
Bearing in mind that both players are still unproven (PL) prospects, the fees spent are (or should be) essentially a development budget.

        • UnkleTaff 17/06/2018 at 11:54 am

You also have to factor in the number of players that have successfully made the transition from lower league to Premier League players. Outside of Dele Alli I’m struggling to think of any over the past 10 years.

Small wonder that Premier League clubs tend to do their shopping overseas these days.

But both Maddison and Grealish look a cut above the usual standard and I’d be happy to see us sign either (or both?) of them.

          • Caspurs 17/06/2018 at 11:57 am

Yep, I definitely think they can make the step up. Will either be a Dele Alli? I couldn’t say, but I don’t believe the club would make a loss, if they didn’t work out.

            • UnkleTaff 17/06/2018 at 12:00 pm

If either of them could be bothered to turn up for more than 30 minutes a game it’d be a start.

    • Ronwol196061 17/06/2018 at 11:30 am

I havent seen Maddison hardly at all. Just looked at some clips on you Tube.He looks a bit like Backham, plays a little like him too but how good is he really. 20 mil is a giveaway for anyone half decent these says

      • Caspurs 17/06/2018 at 11:53 am

I watched several Norwich games last season and he was by far the stand out player in every game. Maddison is more of a number 10, whereas Grealish can and does play wide more often. One reason I like him is that I have always seen Maddison as a possible alternative if and when Eriksen isn’t available. His stats are also very impressive for a 21yr old.

        • Ronwol196061 17/06/2018 at 12:57 pm

We are weaker in the creative positions and any improvement (and I think Moura will play some part to) in developing the creative side to our game is an improvement. Eriksen is the only one now
A player as an upgrade to Dembele (its not easy to get) to me is Number 1 priority)

  • Ronwol196061 17/06/2018 at 11:44 am

Eriksen has definately developed more as a player but I still think he lacks something mentally. I wish he could take on the Modric role but not sure he has what it takes to be the main guy. He has talent for sure but jumping up one more step its all about mentality. Only time will tell

I was fortunate as I only had one father. He wasn’t perfect, of course, but he was Dad and he cared. He was tough, he swore, he could build anything. When I was growing we could work on our own cars and he taught me how to fix stuff. He made me mow the lawn, pick rocks, be respectful to my Mother and tolerate my brother. He had a few classic sayings:
    A. “Quit picking your nose.”
    B. “Hustle, dammit!”
    C. “Get your elbows off of the table.”
    D. “If you want to know your future wife will look like in 30
    years, look at her Mother.”
I could go on and on. He made a nice living, made sure my Mom was financially secure. He had his mind until the day he left us and that was in Feb. 2010. He was a man. He was my Dad. I miss him every day. I love you Dad.

  • MysteriousStranger 17/06/2018 at 1:45 pm

When my mother left my father I was around 5 years old. My older brother and I were raised by him. It was unusual to have your Dad as the single parent back in the late 70s, early 80s. He was a softer version of my Grandad, who was very strict – for example, he would insist that a mouthful of food be chewed 32 times before swallowing. Try it! My Dad didn’t adopt that particular policy, but he sure as hell made sure I washed his car/van, along with doing many of the household chores, as he often worked 18 hours a day working at his fledgling business to put food on the table. When I asked him for more pocket money at around 11 years old, he told me to get a paper round. So I did. And got an after school/Saturday job in my teens. If I wanted more disposable income I had to earn it. He’s also a die hard Spurs fan, and I followed him in that family tradition. We would have a stepmother along the way but it wasn’t for that long. We don’t always see eye to eye, but he’s my Dad and he’s done far more right by us than not – and I’ll always love and respect him for that. Happy Father’s Day!

        • Superspoz 🏆 17/06/2018 at 2:04 pm

Haha. My dad fined me 50p for leaving the bathroom light on. I was 12 and had no money. No lights have been left on unnecessarily ever since.

    • HD 17/06/2018 at 2:02 pm

      Respectfully backatcha MS! 👍

  • Ronwol196061 17/06/2018 at 1:56 pm

OK Its half time excellent game…

My Dad was a bit of a narcissist, but I was very close to him when I was young and we were buddies when I was 15/16 years old but after that when I went out to the world,he knocked me about everything. My clothes, music, getting in late…he called the clubs I went to ‘dens of iniquity’. Sometimes I came hime when he was leaving in the morning (that didnt help) Eventually I couldnt take him anymore and I left England. Not just because of him. I mean I always looked up to him but I found when I moved on,our relationship got worse.
I did love him but it was very difficult. My Mum I loved unconditionally. She was an amazing woman.
So Dad if you are up there listening, would continue our discussions with you and debates. Thanks for showing me the way in footie. It wasnt easy with you generally but I do love you. Hope you are watching the games.

    • MysteriousStranger 17/06/2018 at 2:11 pm

I look back at my late teens/early 20s and had the same criticisms from my Dad, about the clothes, staying out til very late clubbing etc. I think that’s kind of normal. Though I’m not a parent and almost certainly never will be now – I look at the youths of today and can hear echoes of my Dad, in what I think about what these kids are wearing, their hairstyles etc. I think at that age I resented hearing it directed at me as it was, and certainly it fostered ill feelings between us for a time, but fortunately it didn’t last for too long.

      • Ronwol196061 17/06/2018 at 2:16 pm

I was always there to patch it up MS but eventually left.
When I went back I tried desperately to have a good relationship with my Dad. Always had 2 or 3 amazing days there and then bang.Eventually he would get me.Push a button. I had a hard time getting beyond that although I desperately wanted it to be better. I know he struggled with his own demons but was never going to sort it out.

I’m at home with my 3 girls. They’re aged 2 ,6 and 8. Mummy is away on her annual long weekend away. It’s then only time she gets time off from, what I consider to be, the hardest job in the world.

They surprised me with some homemade gifts, including a paper telescope and an awesome poster and a couple of little bits which they spent their own pocket money on. I’m not a fan of these man made “days” but I’m all goey inside now.

I won’t be posting about my own dad today.

Rhys is growing up (nearly 4) is a smart give and my ex wife,my wife,my daughter and my son-in law are all supporting him well and we all talk about his development.
My son-in-law is a tremendous father,Rhys is very lucky.

            • Ronwol196061 17/06/2018 at 3:01 pm

I didnt notice him that much.
The Serbian defence was much more effective than their attack

            • Ronwol196061 17/06/2018 at 3:06 pm

Costa Rica is a small team but they have been doing well generally and play a little like Chile and the Bielsa system. They are not bad and have some good play in the field..passing etc and they stand their ground.
Attacking the Serbia defence for them looked daunting mind you and Costa Rica dont have the best players up top

Teams wot win the World cup rarely come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders.

Germany will regroup after that defeat, Brandt will emerge as the star of the tournament and they’ll more than likely end up winning it again.

So went out with the kids yesterday and had a lovely time, have a stepson Jack who if you were at the Monaco game last year you would have met, he got me a card that made my cry 😭
Got proper spoilt by my two daughters and Jack 😊
My Dad had a god awful childhood in Hungary through the revolution and some seriously hard times, as a result is a bit of a closed book. Bless him 🙏

My dad was brilliant, genuinely don’t think I ever had a cross word with him. A but too fixated with sport, particularly cricket when he was young and bowls when older, for my Mums liking. Only ever had a real go at me once when I ducked out of playing for the school footy team when I was about 10 or 11. Never forgot it. Otherwise easy going and could talk the hind legs off a donkey. He was in the Merchant Navy in the war at 19. Went round the world twice on the ships and got torpedoed twice. His shipmates began to see him as a Jonah which in those days wasn’t such a laugh. No longer with us but wrote a book about his life which is a treasured item.

It suddenly occurred to me that a lot of the mystique about the Brazil team has gone. I can remember WC’s when Brazil seemed from another planet. Nowadays all the players play in Europe so you know who they are and what they can do. Whereas in the 70s/80s/90s most weren’t seen until the WC.

Speed and control has been more effective than just control.
Some teams work twice as hard as others.

I saw the prequel to The Staircase. The Lift Shaft, great show on so many levels.

I saw the pilot of The Lift Shaft, called The Basement. It had quite a dark sub plot which made up for it being a tad low budget.

The problem with said tinterweb, and second hand information is the fact that the truth inevitably becomes distorted. According to the latest translation of the holy book of Chinese whispers, this blogs sole reason for being is to “discuss who they do and don’t like on this one…”
This is all just nonsense, and another case of 2+2 =5, oh well.

    • 61SpursNut 18/06/2018 at 11:50 am

      And also this little nugget:

“…the departure of the Magnificent 7 comes at a time when my traffic traditionally doubles and the comments are halved, and this has encouraged new faces to post.”

      • Caspurs 18/06/2018 at 11:53 am

Jeeze Brother Nut, I was trying my best to distort the truth..

  • MysteriousStranger 18/06/2018 at 11:47 am

Seems over at H’s some have decided to judge people posting on here. Accy just posted a gem of an assessment on there as has H. And apparently traffic is up without a number of “us” posting on there now. Doesn’t sound Trumpesque at all. 😂

I’ve posted on Harry’s blog for a good decade. Well, mostly good. Life is ever changing. The fact is I don’t drink regularly in the same pubs that I used to frequent, and I usually go elsewhere now. This to me is no different. If some of the patrons or the landlord himself are to your distaste or offend then it’s better to move on, than remain in such an environment, no? I won’t be losing any sleep over it, that’s for sure.

It’s a shame it has turned out this way, H was kind enough to reach out to me to ask if I needed any help when I fell ill a couple of years back – which I respectfully declined as I was not in such a bad position to need charitable assistance. I wasn’t on a zero hours contract, and I had a healthcare plan. There were and remain many more worthy of assistance than I needed then. But things change, and I can’t be bothered with getting wound up by certain individuals who post on there.

    • Ronwol196061 18/06/2018 at 11:50 am

      • Caspurs 18/06/2018 at 12:07 pm

Very true. I don’t have any ill feeling towards H’s blog, obviously there have been opinions and actions I have strongly disagreed with, but overall it was a positive experience. Time moves on and things change, I can only wish H and his blog all the best, it just isn’t a place I feel comfortable to post anymore.

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 18/06/2018 at 1:05 pm

I’ve said before that H has got a thoughtful and caring side as others have found out. I’ve not really got a problem with his anti Levy/Enic agenda. I might not agree with it but it’s his opinion on his blog so fair do’s. Where I think he goes way off track is verbally abusing people for a different viewpoint that doesn’t fit with his. Not allowing the person to continue to respectfully fight their corner in reply and just binning them is where the blog loses its balance.

      • HD 18/06/2018 at 1:41 pm

I was never binned by H. He was extremely sensitive to me and my family when my mother passed. You can see his soft side on social issues he cares about. Obviously he keeps an edge to his blog that works for him. I am at a point in my life wherein I prefer to be with people I enjoy. It is hard to go onto his blog, right now, and not want to get into a written fist fight. I don’t want that. Call me a p*ssy, I don’t care. When we came to London one and a half years ago, everyone on this blog opened their arms to Ronnie, UFP and myself. You chaps were fantastic, you became friends, you are who I want to hang out with. I will always be grateful to TBH for facilitating the avenue to the friendships. I still peek into his blog, make an innocuous comment now and then but my interest is waning. Things change.

        • Freund or Foe 18/06/2018 at 2:18 pm

I’d imagine it was a tough decision for you to come on here mate, you come across as an extremely loyal guy. I’m glad you feel like you can be part of both, it’s not a competition as far as I’m concerned. And you’re no pussy, no one worth listening to would consider you that.

Do ya wanna see my scars?

  • UnkleTaff 18/06/2018 at 12:14 pm

So. Who will Southgate plump for today? Dier or Henderson?

I think Dier’s the better player of the two but Henderson had a very good game last time out; his speed and range of forward passing was probably enough for him to get the nod today.

What’s more of a concern is the thought that Sterling will start ahead of Rashford as I really like the look of Kane, Alli, Rashford and Lingard as our attacking four.

    • Ronwol196061 18/06/2018 at 12:29 pm

Hopefully we will run out and score a couple quickly and not have to be under pressure like so many teams have

      • Caspurs 18/06/2018 at 12:34 pm

Tunisia are a defensive team, so I am expecting a park the bus approach, I’m hoping it doesn’t turn out like the Iceland game did.

        • Ronwol196061 18/06/2018 at 12:38 pm

The game has changed. With the advent of fitness levels going up and different strategies emerging, its getting more difficult to play these teams both in the PL and in the WC. A quicker passing game is essential.

    • Caspurs 18/06/2018 at 12:32 pm

For me Sterling is massively over hyped. The qualities an attacking player should possess (imo), are the ability to spot and execute the right pass, and be able to finish chances when they occur. Sterling possesses neither of these, so when playing for England it’s imperative that chances are taken as we don’t tend to create that many in a game.
All the so called experts state he scored 22 goals this season, true, but what they fail to say is that the vast majority were all tap in’s.
