An(nu)al Review
It’s that time of year again when we’re all checking into New Snow, desperately waiting for Poch’s pen to paper, confirmation on Kovacic, terrific news on Tobes. Before we all fall headlong into harm, I’d like to offer my assessment of the season, if only to delay the pain for a few minutes.
Wembley, bloody Wembley. Unmitigated disaster, they said. Will cost us a Champions League spot, they said. Cup final for every visiting team, they said. It’s a 16 hour walk from the nearest tube station, they said.
There’s no doubt that it had an effect, especially early doors, but we soon found our feet and it became a home from home. Or maybe a holiday home, like a timeshare you invested in because you got free tickets to Disneyworld, but then only used for the first few years and spent the next 23 years paying for the privilege.
Stats suggest we didn’t cope quite as well:
2016/17- Won 17, Drew 2, Lost 0, Goals for 47, Goals against 9, Points 53
2017/18- Won 13, Drew 4, Lost 2, Goals for 40, Goals against 16, Points 43
Quite a difference in fortunes, whether that is all down to the Wembley factor, or possibly our form/bedding in new players/injuries/form of other teams, I couldn’t honestly say. Maybe a bit of all of the above.
There wasn’t too much in it, comparing our away form:
2016/17- Won 9, Drew 6, Lost 4, Goals for 39, Goals against 17, Points 33
2017/18- Won 10, Drew 4, Lost 5, Goals for 34, Goals against 30, Points 34
So overall in the league, compared to last season, we were 9 points worse off, 12 goals scored down, and conceded 20 goals more.
Champions League though, eh chaps? Group of death. It’ll be an embarrassment. We’ll be lucky to finish 3rd.
No, we bloody well arrived.
Group stages:
2016/17- Won 2, Drew 1, Lost 3, Goals for 6, Goals against 6, Points 7
2017/18- Won 5, Drew 1, Lost 0, Goals for 15, Goals against 4, points 16
The dramatic improvement was all the more impressive, considering the opponents. 9 points better off, up 9 goals, conceded 2 goals less.
In the League Cup, we achieved the same in both seasons, losing to Liverpool in 16/17, and West Ham in 17/18. That West Ham defeat stung, for sure.
We fared better in the FA Cup, going out in the 5th round to Crystal Palace in 16/17, and losing to Manure in the 17/18 semi-final.
So what is my conclusion?
I’m relatively happy. There’s no doubt that we didn’t reach the same heights in the league as last year, but the CL more than made up for it, for me. Looking at the above stats, it’s clear that in the league we conceded too many goals. We went from the best defence, to the 3rd best defence. Kyle Walker, brainfarts and all, was for me a big loss, as was having Tobes missing for a good portion of the season. Love Sanchez, he’s got some mistakes in him, but I have no doubt he’ll prove to be one of the signings of the decade. It would have been nice to bed him in slowly rather than him being a near ever-present.
No trophies, of course (in case anyone hadn’t noticed), and I firmly believe that the losses to Juve and Manure really hurt Poch and the players. I think they believed they could win both the CL and the FA Cup, as did I, and I think this had an impact on our end of season form.
I’d be lying if I said I don’t care about the trophies, of course I do, we all want success for our club. But honestly, football for me is about moments and memories, and we’ve had our fair share of them this season.
Making the all conquering Liverpool look rather silly at Wembley.
Wanyama’s goal and the controversy around Kane’s penalty at the return game at Anfield (speshley the reaction from Pooh fans).
Winning at the Bridge for the first time in Tony Adams years.
Leicester game, meeting up with the guys beforehand, and me and Cas shaking each other quite vigorously when Kane scored the winner. I love a vigorous shake.
All the CL games, but especially that night at Wembley against Madrid, which I will cherish forever.

    Great stuff!
    Tony Adams years 😂

  • UnkleTaff 17/05/2018 at 1:33 pm

Funny you should write this, FoFty. A couple of days ago I done some research about the impact Wembley had on our home performances and I think the results might surprise a few people.

As you say, we accrued a total of 43 points from our home games last season. This is a total bettered just twice this century (by the season before last’s freakish 53 points and also in 2009/10 when we amassed 44 points).

From a purely results-based objective the decision to use Wembley as our home for a year was something of a masterstroke and maximum kudos should be awarded to the man who made that decision.

If only I could think who that might have been…

    • Freund or Foe 17/05/2018 at 1:41 pm

I must admit that I rather hated Wembley. The journey, the queuing, the lack of atmosphere. But agree, it was by far the best possible choice, both for its location and the financial benefits. Great seeing so many Tottenham fans together, though I’m sure that many feel the same as me; temporarily acceptable, but glad its over. I wanna go home!

      • UnkleTaff 17/05/2018 at 4:19 pm

Can you imagine hosting Madrid and Juventus at Milton Keynes? It would have been embarrassing to watch.

        • Freund or Foe 17/05/2018 at 4:39 pm

Whichever ground was chosen, some would have voiced major concerns, because they could. Wembley ticked every possible positive box.

          • UnkleTaff 17/05/2018 at 4:45 pm

Yup. The only other sensible option (at least from a football perspective) was sharing with Arsenal for a year … but that was never going to happen.

It’s a shame Wembley is a pig to get to, but that’s (hopefully) all in the past now.

  • SpurAndy 17/05/2018 at 1:37 pm

Lovely stuff well opined FoFty. Just to reinforce that football is about individual games and memories on and off the pitch. If it were only about trophies why bother putting yourself through the effort of watching the games until the finals in fact why bother with the final in case you lose. Just check wiki at the end of the season to see if any pots had been won and if so have a little yippee time. Save a lot of time on the boring bit of watching games that way.

    • Freund or Foe 17/05/2018 at 1:48 pm

I’ve said it before, but looking back at my cherished memories, hardly any involve trophies. The Gazza semi final goal, my first FA Cup final against Coventry, being lucky enough to watch Hoddle live in his prime, my first season ticket year (Gazza’s first year), Ginola lighting up the Lane.
I honestly couldn’t tell you where I was for the last two league cup wins, but remember on both occasions my non-Spurs mate ripping the crap out of me because it is a worthless competition.

      • Freund or Foe 17/05/2018 at 2:00 pm

Though I suppose if we’d won shite loads, I may have some additional cherished memories!!!!

        • SpurAndy 17/05/2018 at 3:22 pm

It has to be a combination of memories that make it what it is. I can remember getting on the WHL pitch after we won the UEFA Cup against Wolves in 72 and on the downside losing to Derby in the facup 5-3 after being 3-1 up, can’t remember the date. Going with my Dad to see my first game in 63. Standing in the shelf with me mates. Happy Times.

          • Freund or Foe 17/05/2018 at 3:28 pm

Staying up late with my mum to watch the 84 EUFA Cup, meeting players and ex managers in the Chanticleer with my dad, taking my boys to their first games, the North American invasion, my best Tottenham day ever with some of the Twerps in the Bill Nich suite. The memories, and the people.

  • Flat Oeuf 17/05/2018 at 3:17 pm

Great post, FoF, a thoroughly enjoyable read. It is a big regret of mine that I didn’t make it to the RM game at Wembley.

As you say, taking what were at the time huge disappointments in managing to lose to Juve and Man U from winning positions out of the equation, I see it as a season of further progression in several areas….particularly our CL campaign.

I believe Poch learnt from those 2 losses I mentioned above and started to make ‘defensive’ substitutions designed to close out games towards the end of the season (Watford, Newcastle) which was a welcome tweak to the ‘possession’ system against more ‘defensive-minded’ teams trying to hit us on the break. A bit of boring, boring Tottenham but in the right way, if you like.

Wembley was great for me just because it was 20 mins door-to-door on a good day but I agree: I can’t wait to get to NWHL on the first day of nest season and savour the atmosphere in our new home.

    • Freund or Foe 17/05/2018 at 3:29 pm

You missed a goodun, mate. We walked out saying to each other, “we’ve just witnessed something special”.

      • 61SpursNut 17/05/2018 at 3:31 pm

Beating Real Madrid so convincingly was a wonder to behold, even though I nearly got knocked out by the elbow of a man mountain across the aisle when we scored our third.

I always thought he was a bit of a sphynxter.

  • UnkleTaff 17/05/2018 at 4:10 pm

Pfft. Call yourselves real fans? It’s all about winning trophies; nothing else matters. Did you not get the memo?

  • Freund or Foe 17/05/2018 at 4:12 pm

Seems to be a bit of a kerfuffle about the contract extensions for CCV, Winks and Sanchez.

“So, instead of agreeing new and improved contracts w Toby, Kane, Eriksen, and Jan, we’re wheeling out same for CCV and Winks? And Sanchez who just signed? FFS”.

Do these chumps honestly believe that the new contracts for the above were commenced, discussed, finalised and signed in the last 3 days? And that’s all the club have been doing since the end of the season?

    FFS, for sure.

It was a joy to to behold when you did. I don’t think anyone had challenged him up to that point; I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought he was full of sh*t.

            • Jonspur 17/05/2018 at 7:17 pm

Taff: Was that to FoF or me? We both duffed him up.

You. I know you both had a go at him but I’m sure you struck the first blow.

I did love his post about some concrete delay that was going to set the stadium work back considerably, which Harry jumped on and made a blog out of it (citing it as ITK) only for a number of people (Cas was prominent in this, I think) to pour cold water over the whole idea.

            • Jonspur 17/05/2018 at 7:39 pm

  • Jonspur 17/05/2018 at 7:35 pm

It would be really nice to see Spurs win something, really nice. However, it wouldn’t change anything for me.

Football isn’t all about winning, for me – end of. I tend to think that believing that football is all about winning is infantile and is a mentality which lends itself more to the modern malaise of ‘entitlement’.

I’d write more but I’ve got to take the little dog out for a poo.

    • foeorfreund 17/05/2018 at 7:41 pm

      That’s a shit excuse.

    • UnkleTaff 17/05/2018 at 7:47 pm

It’s a point of view that would get lambasted on the other place but, for me, winning means nothing unless it’s done the right way. Working within sensible financial constraints, playing attractive football, not having to resort to cheating, indulging in (excessive) foul play or abusing the officials to get the result you want. For the most part Tottenham satisfy all these criteria and the success, when it eventually does come, will be all the more sweet because of it.

      • foeorfreund 17/05/2018 at 8:15 pm

I spent a short amount of time on DML, they were mostly a bit boring but one fella had a great name for both Chelsea and ManC, vanity projects. I thought that was pretty perfect, neither of those clubs owners invested the great sums they did to expect to get their money back, and both threw money at it until it worked.
That’s what we’re up against, that and the richest club in the world in Manure.
Both Poch and the club have done incredibly well to be where we are now, and like you Unk, I’m proud of the way we’re doing it.

        • Jonspur 17/05/2018 at 8:25 pm

Me too. As a dyed in the wool spendthrift whose whole financial life has been one of (tiny) boom and (very large) bust, I love the way Levy (and Poch) have got us to where we are without spending any dough. I wish I could ruddy well do something similar.

The idea that Man City are a well-run club is a bit of a myth, as well. Their sponsorship deal with Etihad and the deal they have with Manchester city council over their use of the stadium are dodgy to say the least.

          https://www.theguardian.com/football/2011/oct/04/manchester-city-council-stadium-naming-rights

Basically, they pay the council £2m a year so they can keep all the proceeds from the naming rights — which currently runs at £35m per year, I believe.

Contrast this with West Ham who still haven’t secured a naming-rights deal because the owners of the stadium are (quite rightly) demanding 60% of any income generated by such a deal.

I got the shakes being at Wembley. The power of what it was at that time.England played there and Tottenham owned it in the 60’s. Add that our ex player,Alf Ramseys England World Cup and it was a tremendous decade for us at Wembley.

With saying that everything takes getting used to. Its all in the head though. Some people thrive on new experiences, some it takes them a while. When we played our first game at Wembley against Leicester,we didnt play anywhere as near as well as we played so many times in the league to win it. We seemed tense while Leicester the underdogs were at ease. We got lucky in a way as their back, pre subs,Les Chalmers was carried off with a leg injury and we scraped by to win the league and the double.
The next time we played their we played Burnley and we owned it,then 5 years or so passed and we came back to beat Chelsea claiming Wembley for our own.

We started the season and it was a hill to climb at Wembley but the teams that played us had a bigger hill. They were playing us and so when we started to get use to it, it became again,us owning Wembley.

I never lost hope we would do well there.

    Jonspur

    Breaking news:

Passed all but two (Business law, solicitor’s accounts) of the twelve exams taken so far. No worries really, just a faff to resit and £150 notes per exam. Four more to go. Then the hard work starts.

    Brilliant news mate, well done

Hiya, I’m aware of the screen shaking issue, it happens with mine too. I have contacted the app developer and WordPress but no lasting solution yet. I will be on it again today, plus the .gif issue.

In the meantime, a new, potentially contentious bloeug by UnkleTaff coming up soon.

Hold on to your hats, Oeufers

  • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 9:24 am

Looks like you’ve solved the excess space issue by removing the “Like” option.

Good move. It would have been a nice option to have but the layout looks so much better this way I think it’s something we can live without.

    • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 9:29 am

Ha! Looks like I wrote too soon!

  • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 9:38 am

Just testing the real-time comment thingamajig

    • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 9:42 am

Comments don’t seem to be appearing without a manual refresh at the moment.

      If that helps.

      • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 9:47 am

It does. I’ve disabled the plugin with the real-time widget and that fixes the spacing issue but not the gif thing. Fakinel.

        • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 9:53 am

I think the auto-refresh option outranks all the other considerations. Gifs and jpgs are nice to have but not at the expense of an auto-refresh in my view.

Besides, you can still see the images if you click on the link. And you should be able to tick a box somewhere so that images and gifs open up in a new window. That would be a good compromise (at least until you find a way of incorporating both features).

          • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 9:56 am

I agree auto-refresh is vital but the instability-shaking thing is a real issue for me as well. I’m researching some other comments plugins which will look different and take some getting used to but won’t have all these issues. This plugin hasn’t been update for 4 years and it shows…

            • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 9:58 am

Ah. Sorry. I was forgetting about the shaking thing. I suspect whoever wrote it did so from a PC as there’s no issues when using such a device.

            • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:00 am

Ok let’s try this out. Have disabled the Like button. Unk pls reply

            • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:01 am

I had to manually refresh the page to see your comment.

            • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:02 am

…but that might be because I replied too quickly. Have another go and I’ll leave it for 30 seconds or so.

  • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:02 am

    Try that again Unk

    • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:02 am

If I do it I think it comes straight up

      • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:03 am

        Yup

      • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:03 am

        That works.

        • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:03 am

          How’s the shaky thing?

          • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:05 am

Sorted! It was the slow-loading Like button that was causing it.

            • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:07 am

Excellent. If people want to express their admiration for a post they can just post a “Like” comment if they want to. No loss.

I really like the layout at the moment. Very stylish.

Just a shame the content’s not up to much…

            • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:11 am

Time for a new bloeug, methinks…over to you

            • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:12 am

              Okey-dokey.

  • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:03 am

    • Flat Oeuf 18/05/2018 at 10:04 am

Great all good now apart from .gifs

    • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:05 am

Have to right click and open in a new tab, but that’s hardly the end of the world.

And to be totally honest I could live without images and gifs populating the page.

    • UnkleTaff 18/05/2018 at 10:12 am

On my website there’s an option to have a link open up in a new window. I’m guessing WordPress has something similar (should just be something as simple as a tickbox). If you can find that and activate I’d say we’re good to go.
