Dr Hugo Jekyll or Mr Lloris Hyde?

So here we are again, the football season is over and we find ourselves once again in the hall of mirrors reflecting on the heroes and villains of seasons past. So who is the man wearing the gloves? Dr Hugo Jekyll or Mr Lloris Hyde?

Over the course of the season we have seen Dr Hugo Jekyll perform miracles between the sticks, yet at other times we’ve found ourselves witnessing the maleficent antics of a certain Mr Lloris Hyde. Personally I think he’s equipped himself adequately this season, to say he’s been fantastic might be pushing the bounds of reality just a tad.

Our Hugo has been much maligned by a number of our fans, I’m not so sure he deserves all the criticism he receives. Yes he has been prone to poor judgement at times, occasionally believing he’s an outfield player (causing multiple panic attacks). I would probably say he’s been pretty consistent over the last couple of seasons, we have come to know what to expect, and prepare for.

Mostly we see the usual impeccable bed side manner of Dr Hugo Jekyll keeping our goal safe and healthy, but we all know somewhere inside the gloved man there is a battle raging, where on occasion the mischievous Mr Lloris Hyde prevails.

With all personalities considered, I feel we are in safer hands (pun intended) with our conflicted French ball handler in goal than not. It’s all too easy for some to focus on the mistakes he’s made, yes there have been a few, but he has kept us in more games, than he has lost for us.

  • Flat Oeuf 31/05/2018 at 12:57 pm

As for Hugo, I’ve been complaining about his distribution for 4 seasons now so I won’t rehash that. Vorm did the exact same in the FA Cup SF by chipping the ball into touch, just when we had Yanited on the ropes, which led directly to their equaliser.

With so much of our game based on playing out from the back, my view is that if a team come to press us high (Citeh), then Hugo is more liability than asset.

On the other hand, you’re spot on. He makes some great saves at vital moments which have turned games to our advantage by keeping us ahead or level.

Additionally, he’s a calm head who’s committed to the Club. I think he should be made Club Captain and the on field Captaincy should be given to someone else…quite who is a debate for another day (but not Dier :}).

  • SpurAndy 31/05/2018 at 1:16 pm

Nice over view Cas and I am happy to agree with your view that Lloris is a major asset as confirmed by the inestimable CIES Football Observatory who place him as the numero uno keeper in Europe. Some slight concern that De Gea is no where to be seen and that Karius has crept into the list, crapped and crept out again but nevertheless our boy is the top banana.

    http://www.football-observatory.com/IMG/sites/b5wp/2017/220/en/phone/index.html

    • Caspurs 31/05/2018 at 1:31 pm

Lloris is numero uno?!?! That I find hard to believe, I can only assume CIES must be an Enic company…

  • McG ⚽⚽ 31/05/2018 at 2:55 pm

Yeah, I agree with most of that Cas. It would be very difficult to find an upgrade without spending an absolute fortune, & we have more important areas to direct our transfer funds imo. He does make the occasional mistake, but is a great shot stopper & races off his line getting us out of trouble on many occasion. Def a keeper! As for Cies, maybe that’s to do with him having conceded so few goals over the last 3 seasons??

I do believe that I have been chuntering on about Lloris retiring in a Spurs shirt having worn no other club shirt between now and then with X number of trophies under his ceinture. I see no reason nor desire to amend my view.

Oh, BTW, it’s fantastic to hear about your son’s marvellous literary exploits FoFty! Bravo!

Oh well, I guess we all know what the big story will be over the next few days, what did I actually have for lunch yesterday? To clarify, I haven’t spoken to the press, and anything you happen to read will be pure speculation on their part.

  • UnkleTaff 01/06/2018 at 9:56 am

The bed-wetters are having a field day at the moment.

“This is the same Mauricio Pochettino that sacked off Southampton at the first time of asking.”

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve pointed out that Pochettino left Southampton over a matter of principle, but because it doesn’t fit the narrative it just gets ignored.

    • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 01/06/2018 at 10:16 am

I’m pretty sure if Poch wanted the job now he would have stalled on signing the new contract. It wasn’t that unlikely that Zinedine had decided to go so Poch could have waited another few weeks if he really wanted it now. Its possible he could go but quite unlikely imo.
It is funny how Botchetino is now the messiah again. Some footy fans have the memory of a gnat.

      • UnkleTaff 01/06/2018 at 10:25 am

I think there’s more chance of Sherwood taking over at Madrid than there is of Pochettino.

He’s building something really special here. He’s spent the last three years laying down the foundations (time he wouldn’t get at Madrid, and he knows it) and there is not the slightest doubt in my mind that he intends seeing this project through to its end.

He will be our Alex Ferguson.

        • SpurAndy 🍒 🥧 01/06/2018 at 10:30 am

I’d love that to happen Taff but I’m a little more cynical I’m afraid. Managing a Galactico is regrettably still the ultimate bench mark for most managers. I wouldnt be surprised if managing Real is on his to do list at some point. I don’t have a problem with that but I just hope he wins lots of stuff with us first.

          • DAVID 01/06/2018 at 10:39 am

Hard to call for me if Poch will stay or go to RM if offered the job, if it’s a job he’s always wanted then I guess that’s it, a bit like when they came calling for Bale.
If he turned them down now, would they come back in for him in a few years and would he want to take that risk ?
Poch can end the speculation in an instant with one statement, interesting times ahead.
