Dan’s Friday Feelgood Factorette

Ac felly rydym yn croesawu Caerdydd i Wembley, cartref byd-enwog (dros dro) y Spurs!

Which roughly translated (according to Google Translate, anyway – so it could pretty much be saying anything) means and so we welcome Cardiff to Wembley, the world famous (temporary) home of the Spurs, their first trip to us in the Prem since 2nd March 2014, when we were sitting pretty in fifth and they were squatting ugly in 19th.

That last visit ended in a brilliantly engineered Tim Sherwood victory to us by a whopping 1-0 margin, enhancing Tim’s chances of going down in Tottenham folklore as the manager with the greatest win-percentage of all time despite only having much-of-a-muchness to choose from.

Alas for both clubs, each would drop a position by the end of that season, with us finishing ten points behind Arsenal in fourth (remember when they nearly always used to come fourth, and always – always – above us?) and three points behind Everton in fifth (remember when not finishing above Everton used to be a conceivable thing?). Cardiff ended bottom of the pile, accompanying Fulham and Norwich into the Championship.

Our team that day was Lloris, Naughton, Dawson, Verts, Fryers, Dembele, Paulinho, Lennon, Townsend, Adebayor and Soldado, with Soldado getting the winner in the 28th minute – a really well taken close-range effort following a pretty-slick move between himself, Townsend and Adebayor. According to the BBC match report, ‘Spurs came closest to scoring in an underwhelming second-half when David Marshall saved substitute Harry Kane’s effort’.

This time around, it’s pretty much as you were for Colin’s Cardiff as they’re still squatting ugly in 19th, having taken two points from seven games. Should they lose to us on Saturday – and, really, they should; I’m firing up the VPN and creating an alias on a certain other website to truly wet the bed with some like-minded individuals if they don’t – they’ll have the proverbial two points from eight games, and we all know a manager who can help them with that…

For us, we’re one place better off than we were the last time Cardiff came calling four and a half years ago, which I’m going to use as a spurious link to the fact we’re also one place better off than Cardiff in the ever-important net-spend table for roughly the same period, Enic having diverted £18 million worth of cheese-room supplies towards our somehow competitive first team in that period, roughly £5 million more than Vincent Tan has needed to invest in order to return Cardiff to second from bottom in the Prem.

Just to show that pounds don’t necessarily mean progress, though, Arsenal and Everton spent £221m and £203m respectively across those five years. Man United, £400m. Saturday will see us kick-off on the same points as Arsenal, five points above United and six points above Everton. Although, of course, both Arsenal and United have won trophies in some of those seasons, and both United and Arsenal somehow finished above us in the league in one each of the last three seasons.

And, of course, for any non dumb-dumbs who might be reading, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool have net-spends of £508m, £242m and £173m across those five years, and all go into Saturday’s round of matches better off than we are – Man City and Liverpool (who, of course, face-off at Anfield this weekend) four points to the good, and Chelsea, who face Saints, two points.

Meaning, should Dippers and City draw and ourselves and Chelsea win, (and should my maths not have screwed this up), we’ll end this weekend two points behind the three teams tied at the top of the Prem.

Other than 16/17, where we were a point behind City and Arsenal, that will be the closest we’ve been to the top spot after eight games in Poch’s time with us. Chelsea, who won the Prem that season, were three points off top spot, lurking behind us and Liverpool in fifth.

Which, given we still haven’t really performed at anything like our best in any competition so far this season, is pretty astounding. Because, points-wise, following last weekend’s trip to the Terriers, we’re still slightly improved on last season’s results – a whopping single point better off following the same number of games, and an even more awe-inspiring three points better off against the same opponents.

If we’re going to maintain these superior stats, though, nothing short of a win will do against Cardiff, as we beat Bournemouth 1-0 at home in this round of matches last season and scuppered Stoke – who finished second from bottom and are therefore the team I’m swapping results against Cardiff with – 5-1 at Wembley.

Irrespective of what we do against Cardiff, though, cups add context, and this time last season we’d beaten Barnsley one-nil, Borussia Dortmund three-one and APEOL three-nil. However, as weird as it sounds, none of those games left me feeling quite as optimistic as Wednesday’s defeat against Barca. The fact an out-of-sorts Spurs team without Verts, Eriksen and Alli – and, perhaps to a lesser extent, Dembele – could gift Barca that opener, concede that second, see Messi strike the same post twice within a matter of minutes, and yet still be one late blocking tackle away from a three-three draw after subbing on Sissoko says there’s still a lot about this Tottenham team that is very, very right.

If anything, there’s no reason why Poch can’t sell this to the squad as a glorious defeat and inspire them to go on a run the way Redknapp did in 2010 after Bale’s hat-trick in that 4-3 defeat at the San Siro, when, other than that obvious blip in the return at The Lane a fortnight later, ‘Arry inspired us to a one-one draw away to Everton, our customary two-nil defeat away to Manchester United, a four-two defeat away to Bolton, and a brave one-one draw at home to Sunderland.

Hmmmm. Or maybe, hopefully, not. Because, following next weekend’s interlull, it’s Pikey’s away and City at ‘home’, so if we’re going to continue to keep pace with the spenders, we’re going to have to cut out the stupid mistakes at the back and build on the attacking verve we sporadically displayed against Barca. I think we’ve got us in it to do it. But I’m a Flat Oeufer, me.

It would be nice to play some cohesive footy, come away with a win to stroll into the interlull with. Harry needs a note from home to say he won’t be going on England camp this time, hopefully a few of the other injured players don’t recover just in time to go off to get injured again on international duty. Rest time lads, stay down

I have a great affinity with Wales and the Welsh. (Taff doesn’t think so😜)
My Rhys he is Welshish and my Son in Law is a Welsh prop.
Love the place too especially the North.
I do think we will do the Men of Harlech though. I think we were good for the Barça game even if our defensive tactics werent.
    Nice win I think.

Mind the Gaps. It killed us during the week.

And going back to that game. It’s a difficult situation to handle Messi and Suarez. If you get too tight with Suarez he can beat you or beat the trap. Play conservative and get behind them by 10 yards and the will murder you with their angled passing.
They was was to mix it up.
The system was too obvious and they picked us apart.

This one is easy relatively. Just got to do the business

  • McG ⚽⚽ 05/10/2018 at 2:33 pm

Yep, in terms of points, it’s a good haul from 7 games. You also forgot another point, that comes from just two games at home. It’s the performances that matter to me, Dips & Watford really annoyed, then we come up with a 2nd half like Barca. We do need to get some consistency this season, it’s good to pick up points when you not playing well, but we can’t perform below par for too long, need to snap out of it. Least we get some players back after the break…

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 05/10/2018 at 3:03 pm

As good as the Barca performance was from a passion and high tempo point of view , which I thought it was, can’t help feeling a bit miffed as to why we can’t do it against the Watford’s of this world. There does seem to be a little of the ‘to posh to push’ mentality at times against the lower teams.

  • 89Spurs 👁 05/10/2018 at 3:09 pm

    Nice piece Dan, good read.
At least this weekend we wont have Messi, making a fool of us. We still need to cut out the mistakes, that showed us up on Wednesday, no more brain farts etc. It will be nice too see the tempo as high as it was against Barca.

  • TCY 05/10/2018 at 3:14 pm

Of course didn’t see Barca game. Watching Watford and Inter games it looks all too Spursy to me so far. Plus obvious hideous mistake by Hugo in first minute. This is not the stuff of championship seasons.

Thanks to Dan for nice analysis. I can still see Spurs finishing 4th—or maybe 5th. Net spend has to catch up with us sooner or later.

We just haven’t clicked yet, that’s all. Maybe we should have, but we haven’t, and yet we’re still within touching distance of good things.

As far as the CL goes I hope we get out of the CL group but won’t wet my pance if we don’t.

In fact, I think I’d rather we drop out of the CL early, finish top four and have CL footy in the new gaff, than lose top four in favour of a CL quarter or semi final this season.

I don’t care about the Cowabunga Cup and the (sweet) FA Cup means sweet FA to me.

If we keep close to the top two until the New Year, we’ll be challengers, fo’ rizzle.

The bed-wetting inadequates will slosh around in their stinky yellow-stained polyester sheets whatever happens. Until we win something of course and then they’ll be singing and dancing with real fans like the whining, entitled snowflakes they are.

  • MiT 05/10/2018 at 5:19 pm

    Nicely done, Dan.

Questions need to be answered defensively for Spurs to start stepping up to challenge the top spots. It is hard to run the tightest of ships with the disappointment of another slog away from home when Poch and the lads expected their toils last season to be paid in full with new home digs in a shiny, loud, world class stadium weeks before now.

It is what it is. Whenever the stadium opens, it should provide a huge boost. Until then, the ship may creak and pitch a bit, and understandably so.

At least understandably so in my estimation. I realise that others may expect more. However, these young men are human, and young footballers tend to be very emotionally driven creatures.

COYS. One of these days soon, there will be light glaring into the tunnel… with lots of curious faces looking in. Until then, play on, play hard, play proudly. Expect more of yourselves, and you will find more within yourselves.

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 05/10/2018 at 5:38 pm

We are in exceptional times, a new stadium, a once in a lifetime event. Personally never thought we could separate the build from the playing. It’s too big, too consuming in time, money and effort. I think Levy was wrong to suggest you could or maybe he was just nieve. He doesn’t strike me as nieve. It may be a bit painful now and obviously far too painful for some but you grow and aspire to better things or you stagnate and become an also ran. History will dictate whether Levy/ENICs plans will bear fruit but the one thing you can’t accuse them of is doing nothing.

      • MiT 05/10/2018 at 6:10 pm

Doing nothing…. no, I suppose not.

I am somewhat with HH on ENIC. Just to keep it brief, my beef with them is that they have always made Spurs look like a milking teat for the fans.

I understand that they’ve taken a slow and conservative approach to buying and selling players. However, for years Levy has bought players at the ends of the windows, trying to milk pennies out of the deal.

That’s not supporting your managers at all. That’s not giving the players a full camp to bed in to be productive. It’s not milking pennies, it’s wasting money. It’s wasting a season.

Then, he turns around and treats manager after manager like a sacrificial lamb when he didn’t support them in the first place.

Fine, Levy has done well with player profits. However, after years and years, what does he do?

He takes those player profits, and takes some of the highest ticket prices and fan milking in the Premier League
… to build a stadium (and surrounding area)intended by design to milk fans of as much more money as financially possible.

Pochettino stands strongly despite the lack of support with a united squad. However, when the time comes, and the squad falters under the pressure of lack of support, he’ll be just as much of a sacrificial lamb. I truly believe that.

I think I’d want him to leave for a better opportunity first. That’s not being a bad fan, that’s caring deeply for an individual who has truly worked hard to step Spurs up to where they are.

Sure, we don’t agree with some Personnel decisions, but the things that the man has done in spite of everything is truly amazing.

Do I buy into all of the negativity on HH’s blog ? No.

Do I feel like he has a well-founded and legitimate beef against ENIC and Levy ? Absolutely.

        • MiT 05/10/2018 at 6:12 pm

The way Levy has treated his managers over the years by not supporting them and then treating them like culprits it’s nothing short of chickensh*t.

          Interesting choice of word.

        • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 05/10/2018 at 6:31 pm

Fair enough MiT, we all take a view on the available info and make a call. It’s rarely based on facts, partly because it’s difficult to know what are facts and what are fiction. I’m not a Levy lover or a hater. I think he’s done some good things and some bad. The only real facts that are undeniable are our recent performances over the last few years and our position in the tables at the end of the season. Based on that I think we’ve progressed. Is that partly/wholly because of Levy/ENIC or in spite of them. I honestly don’t know, but my gut feeling is that it’s at least partly due to them. I don’t think they are the perfect owners but there are many worse out there.
When I first started reading HH about 4 years ago he seemed far more even handed with his criticism of levy. He’s never liked them and I’ve said it before I think there’s something personal between him and Levy that’s twisted his melons to the caricature he is now.

          • MiT 05/10/2018 at 6:54 pm

Just making it clear that I’ll support the manager and players to the end. I will revel in the excitement of the fans and of the players and staff over the new stadium digs, and I won’t beat the dead horse into the ground.

I simply think there’s a fair point somewhere in all that.

            • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 05/10/2018 at 7:07 pm

Absolutely MiT, always happy to respect your view. I just think nothing is black or white, it’s just different shades of grey.

Levy has zero track record of backing a manager and the frightening thing right now for me is that he appears not to be backing the best manager arguably in world football.
Could Pep have gotten the same results with Spurs with a net spend of £15m in 4 and a bit years? I have my doubts.
If Pooch does leave at some point because we can’t afford to compete would the fans blame the stadium or Levy? I think the majority would blame Levy.
The fact is there is fack all we can do about it so banging on about it all the time gets tiresome.

          • MiT 06/10/2018 at 5:53 am

            I agree.

      • MiT 05/10/2018 at 6:18 pm

For the record I agree that we’re an exceptional times. It will be truly exciting, and truly beautiful. A beautiful, exciting Titty Factory.

Takes a special kind of genius to tear down a fortress, and in its place build a titty factory onto which fans can attach themselves and be proud.

        I will stop there.

        • McG ⚽⚽ 05/10/2018 at 10:09 pm

Why are you calling it a titty factory MIT? It’ll be our new home & a beautiful one at that. Without it we’ll never compete with goons, mancs, dips etc, I really don’t see we had a choice but to evolve & keep with the times. The likelyhood is we’ll be snapped up in the non-too distant future & jump that final hurdle. It seems to me every attention to detail has been paid in terms of making our ground a real cauldron ala Dortmund. Look how close we are to the pitch compared with spammers or goons. I agree ENIC haven’t backed our managers as much as they should have done, but in terms of the new home they’ve organised, I really can’t fault it.

          • MiT 06/10/2018 at 5:52 am

5 star dining for lots of extra dosh. A peep show in the tunnel for lots of extra dosh. You think the players want that ?

One Twenty Club. The Venue. Etc etc.

            Milking factory.

            • Fatty B 06/10/2018 at 9:10 am

If you don’t want to engage with any of the extras, don’t. Then you won’t have been ‘milked’. It’s a bit like complaining about cinemas selling popcorn and hot dogs: if you don’t want them, don’t buy them.

When we played Barcelona we got it wrong. Our marking was terrible.
That’s not Levy but that was Poch.
The international players were enough to hold them but they were not marking right they gave Barça that much space.

    • Flat Oeuf 06/10/2018 at 10:38 am

‘Marking’ in open play these days seems to be as much about closing passimg lanes and occupying space. This doesn’t work at set pieces 😳

  • Syd 06/10/2018 at 2:35 am

The January transfer window will be as much important to our future as will the next few weeks with our injuries. I think we will know a lot more about what is going to happen with Levy and the club after January 31.
I know all windows are important but I believe the next one will be the most important one for quite some time

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 06/10/2018 at 8:07 am

He’ll either buy Neymar or sell Kane, Eriksen and Dele. Nothing else is possible. 😉

      • Chauvelin 06/10/2018 at 8:36 am

What Levy needs to do is sort out new contracts for Eriksen, Vertonghen and Alderweireld pronto. That’s what I want to see him do.

    • Sexy Beast 06/10/2018 at 8:38 am

The only realistic way we get “Good” signings over the line would be targeting players who are low on contract length ie Rabiot perhaps, Martial but I don’t see Manure selling him to us mid season.
Factor in Levy’s previous convictions in the transfer windows and I hold little hope.

    • Fatty B 06/10/2018 at 9:12 am

Home. The fans will … make it so!

    • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 06/10/2018 at 9:15 am

It is our home, mine, yours and all good and true Spurs fans. It’s just had a little makeover.

    • Sexy Beast 06/10/2018 at 10:15 am

When I’m taking the Victoria line to Seven Sisters and not jumping off to divert to the Jubilee Line it will be like that m going home, when I go up the escalator at Seven Sisters and m waiting for the train to White Hart Lane if will feel like I’m going home, when we pull out of Bruce Grove and catch that first glimpse of the greatest stadium ever built it will feel like we are all coming home.
Yes it will be new for everyone but it will feel like home because it is our home, it’s just a new Home and no one in World Football will have a home remotely as good as ours!

Some interesting stats here on how Spurs are pretty damn good at some stuff this season.

    • Chauvelin 06/10/2018 at 9:36 am

If, or rather when, Mourinho gets the Royal Order of the Boot, Spurs will then be subjected to an incessant media barrage telling us that Pochettino will be taking over at Old Trafford and probably taking Alderweireld, Eriksen, Vertonghen in January plus Kane and Alli next summer.

Be prepared for the usual assault against our club.

Personally, I was hoping the Special One would stay at least until December so we can watch the fun and stack up a big points lead over ManUre.

  • Chauvelin 06/10/2018 at 9:47 am

    Just win the game today.

Has anyone noticed, but we’ve played most of the struggling sides so far (Huddersfield, Newcastle, Fulham, Brighton) and Cardiff possibly the weakest side of all and at home. Got to take maximum points from all the relegation fodder, no fack ups are acceptable.

    • 61 Spurs Nut 🌰 06/10/2018 at 10:11 am

You left Manure off that list.

      • Chauvelin 06/10/2018 at 10:17 am

Heh! What chance did they have? Playing that sack o’shite up front. He’s had a charmed life but Lukaku is such an overrated player, unless the ball is carefully placed on the tip of his boot he’s a rubbish striker.

  • Chauvelin 06/10/2018 at 10:25 am

I just heard Gary Neville indicating the whole thing is a disgrace and blames the Manchester United board and wondering what is happening to the principles of the club. I’m no big lover of Jose but this type of behaviour is Criminal.

I grew up with him, known him since I was four. It’s hard to spend time with him in the last 20 years, on the odd occasion that we go out for a drink, I spend the whole time cringing and trying to stop him fighting.
But I can honestly say that, despite all, he’s the most trustworthy and caring person I know. I could call on him for anything, anytime, and he’d be there for me.

Tottenham are unbeaten in 37 Premier League games against promoted sides (W34 D3) since losing vs QPR in April 2012. The run is the second longest of its kind in the Premier League, after Chelsea’s record of 63 between May 2001 and September 2011.

  • foeorfreund 06/10/2018 at 12:09 pm

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has scored against 26 of the 27 different sides he’s faced in the Premier League. The only side he’s yet to find the net against are Cardiff – he played just 16 minutes against them across two games in the 2013-14 campaign.

However, according to BBC News’ Sport Editor Dan Roan, the 55-year-old has now been assured of his Manchester United future after clear the air talks with United chiefs in London.

Roan tweeted this morning: “My understanding is that Mourinho is not in any imminent danger.

“There was a meeting in London yesterday between Utd & the manager’s camp, but they were told he’ll be given time to turn things around.

“Newcastle match could obviously change things, but that’s current situation.”

Sky Sports also reported this morning that United chiefs have dismissed the sacking claims as ‘nonsense’.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 06/10/2018 at 1:00 pm

No manager, no matter how impressive their list of previous achievements, ever comes with a guarantee.

Besides, winning silverware would be one thing … picking up the pieces after his inevitable toxic departure would be something else entirely.

I’ve always despised the man’s approach to the game and the thought of him ever having anything to do with my club makes my blood turn cold.

So that’s a “no” from me.

        • Matt 06/10/2018 at 1:19 pm

I’m afraid it’s a no from me too. Sorry Jose, you’re not through to judges houses.

        • foeorfreund 06/10/2018 at 1:20 pm

The question is void. Jose would never work under Levy. He can’t get what he wants at the richest club in the world, let alone the most prudent.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 06/10/2018 at 1:24 pm

It was only hyperthetical, can a hipatheticle question be void??!

            • foeorfreund 06/10/2018 at 1:38 pm

              Ok, it’s hypothetically voided.

          • UnkleTaff 06/10/2018 at 1:36 pm

I would have so much more respect for any of these ‘big-spekding’ managers if, having won pretty much everything there is to in in the game, they decided to see pitch up at somewhere like Barnsley or Hartlepool. Just to see if they could cut it.

            • McG ⚽⚽ 06/10/2018 at 1:41 pm

I understand what you saying, but Jose cut his teeth at a none mega money club. Bit diff to say ZZ or Pep..

  • Matt 06/10/2018 at 1:17 pm
