Cogent Analcyst

What a disjointed game again… I dont get it…terrible passing again out of defence..its like nobody knows what to do with the ball….Sanchez that way again the biggest culprit. I mean how many passes does it take to get out of the first third???????
The Good,The Bad and the Ugly.
The Good certainly was Winks,he looked more mature than most and unlike most didnt look anxiety ridden. His passes were crisp and quick even if they werent earth shattering. I thought he was our best player.
Moura too had a go and showed brilliance in face of not having too many other players with the same kind of energy. He tried to beat one too many at times but what the hell most of the others were asleep.
Son was terrible. When he is bad he is bad.
Dier was ok in this one even without the goal. I also liked Roses energy,he has a go and is generally getting better even though . For me he owns the position now. Trippier wasnt so bad,but not so good either. His heady England days are gone for now.
Not having Eriksen or Dele hurt but i do think that Winks was
better than Dembele would have been as his game has gone down recently.
All in all we got 3 points but were much less than convincing. We looke closer to a mid table side even if Poch lauds our position.
I think he has to look at parts of his system as the problem. Its hard to see but our passing out of defence being mediocre the same week in week out has not been addressed by the genius, shows a sample of something he cant get right (or fails to see it at all)
70% possession gives us a false reading of our superiority if thats what you want to call it

      Thanks for that Fatty!!!
Ive seen the glory and sometimes the gory…this one was more gory. This was an excerpt from my latest book The Gory Gory Game.
With our passing out of defence the proprietors should now create a new banner that lauds boredom as a positive thing.

      • UnkleTaff 07/10/2018 at 12:41 pm

Sanchez actually had a very good pass-completion rate (at 93.3% he was our best performer in that regard, just edging out Winks’s 93%).

However, if you look at the actual passes he made (using the chalkboard from the link below) you’ll see that a large number of those successful passes were either back to Lloris or to one of his co-defenders.

Just one of the reasons why it’s not advisable to take stats at face value.

        • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 07/10/2018 at 12:42 pm

I never take stats as a real marker of anything as the quantify rather than qualify

Here’s a useful resource for those (like myself) who like this sort of thing … and it looks like it’s a regular feature on our very own THFC website.

A quick play on the Chalkboard section confirms just how good Harry Winks was yesterday.

    • HD 🇺🇸 07/10/2018 at 12:44 pm

I think Winks is just starting to scratch the surface of his own ability and what he is and will be bringing to the squad. It is all upside for this young man.

What I like about his yesterday was his calmness under pressure and his choices. I thought it was his best game so far (he might have had a one off before) but he looked very in control and looks as if he will get better too,I agree

I profoundly disagree. Doing your best and losing is demoralising. If you can’t win when you’re at the top of your game where do you go? If you win playing badly you know things can get better and the winning become more. convincing.

    Cogent analacys.

How about some cogent answers to cogent questions—

    Why Sissoko?

Why trust Sissoko and Winksie to start but Coco lucky to get 20 minutes?

    Was Moura a morning glory?

Who really thinks Davies has more ability than Rose?

What really happens at half time?

What is Hugo’s booze of choice?

Is he past it? (Hope not.)

    • Chauvelin 07/10/2018 at 1:11 pm

    • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 07/10/2018 at 1:17 pm

      Why Sissoko?

Thats what I ask myself. but Sissoko did not buy himself,we bought him. So I would ask the management. Why play him so much? Thats something to ask Poch.

His Play? It wasnt the worst he did bring the ball up quicker than most but when he got there didnt know what to do with it . He is doing his best. Its not his fault.

Moura did very well. There was little space as nobody was running into space and he took on too much in his dribbles but he was still one of our better players

Rose is much better than Davies and will get his old form back soon,he is getting there

Half time? Its all according if Poch reads the possession statistics as a marker of the game. Not sure what he sees.

Lloris seemed better than usual, but bring in Gazza. I got more faith in Gazza

I said he hadn’t got a banjo. However, in his defence, he didn’t choose to play. He didn’t pay the 30 million transfer fee, nor pay himself 95k per week. Levy and Poch did all that.
He plays as well as he can. It’s just not that well.

              • Fatty B 07/10/2018 at 2:13 pm

Sissoko isn’t an attacking or creative player, he’s a ‘water carrier’.

                • Chauvelin 07/10/2018 at 2:15 pm

That’s about long and short of it.

              Pass! Next question?

          • Fatty B 07/10/2018 at 2:04 pm

The problem I suspect is that MoPo knows what he wants/gets from Sissoko, and Sissoko gives MoPo what MoPo asks for; whereas Sissoko doesn’t give the fans what the fans think he should.

It’s a bit like going to an Oxford theatre with Joyce and Poxy to see Jason Statham in an RSC production of The Merchant of Venice and being upset because he’s not Anthony Sher, without considering that the director deliberately cast Statham for his gruff and gritty (pretend) realism.

So Sissoko isn’t Hoddle, Gazza or Ginola; what’s the point in coating him off for what he obviously isn’t? It’s clear to me that Poch sees value in him and plays him accordingly. Unless it’s Levy picking the side …

            • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 07/10/2018 at 2:13 pm

              Good analgy Fats. Agree 100%

            • Caspurs 07/10/2018 at 2:14 pm

The issue many fans have with Sissoko is that he’s not a technically gifted player who happens to have two banjo’s for feet. Yes he provides a physical presence in the team that Poch wants but, is it not unreasonable to think there are players who can provide both physicality and technical ability? I would say yes.
We play a possession based game, often having to break down defensively minded teams, which often requires accurate passing, that is why (for me) Sissoko looks so out of place in our team.

crappola and I hope doesnt get a game in our new stadium when the whole televised football world gets to have a close look at him and realises he only looks like a footballer because he has our kit on. He cant in fact play football as he looks like he doesnt understand how to kick the ball and make it do what he wants. It could be highly embarassing for us

        • Caspurs 07/10/2018 at 1:59 pm

It’s football ’89’, people invest their passion and emotions following their team. Posters can say what they like, my only issue is when people concoct fictional diatribe regardless of the facts (we know who’s good at that).
The team didn’t play well, confidence looks low, and compared to previous seasons people are entitled to comment on why that may be the case.
Who’s kidding who if people paper over the defects and pretend all is great, it isn’t, we’re just trying to fathom out why we aren’t playing as we can at the moment, nothing more.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 07/10/2018 at 2:05 pm

Injuries, world cup fatigue, couple of poor team selections by Poch, nothing terminal there in respect of our season. I’d be more worried if we were mid table I guess, but we’re weathering the storm quite well, & can only get better imo.

      • McG ⚽⚽ 07/10/2018 at 1:43 pm

Missed the game yesterday, but it does sound like another disjointed performance. Factor in the injuries, & the fact we’re up to third playing badly (sign of a great team), there’s not too much to complain about. We’ll up the anti when players come back & we’re playing the big boys…

We beat Fulham 3-1 at Wembley, they spank them 5-1 at Craven Cottage. I don’t take a heap of comfort from that thought.

          • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 07/10/2018 at 2:25 pm

If we maintain our current form I’d tend to agree. However most teams have ups and downs in a season. Factor in the return of Dele and eriksen and I’m reasonably positive we can pull out of the doldrums.

          • McG ⚽⚽ 07/10/2018 at 2:26 pm

We currently sit a point off top, having played 5 away from home, & 3 at Wembley. We’ll improve no question, stop having a wobble!!!

            • Chauvelin 07/10/2018 at 2:37 pm

My point being, the two NLDs will be very important this season.

In terms of top four. Critical, in fact.

          • Fatty B 07/10/2018 at 2:49 pm

It’s an improvement on Dillenberg’s persistent ‘lucky to make top six’ contribution.

  • Chauvelin 07/10/2018 at 2:27 pm

Anyone know anything about Foyth’s availability? From early sighting of him he looks like a defender who intends to carry the ball like Verts. I’d like to see him in the next Carabou cup match.

  • Bruxie 07/10/2018 at 2:28 pm

Lloris is finished in my eyes.
I just want rid…and replaced with a decent keeper whose judgement is sound and footwork better than average.
    Burnley have three good keepers.

Something is going on with Lloris’ confidence. I cannot see any improvement happening soon.

He should not be captain. His form and behaviour are contributing to our lack of confidence passing out from the back.
He’s always been a naff distributor.

    • MiT 07/10/2018 at 8:39 pm

He has certainly played somewhat like a Jack In The Box since his drinking and driving arrest.

The Spurs Squad is a squad built on chemistry. You are right, it’s difficult for them to regain that chemistry with a broken captain at the back.

That takes a long time to recover — especially with a change of Captain. I simply think I’d like to see Lloris back to his best, and lining the defense out in front of him.

I do realize that’s not a very popular opinion. Most people would simply want a different Captain to be picked. However, we don’t pick the captain. Those players out there on the pitch and in the dressing room do. Poch might assign the band, but the players follow their own choices.

      • MiT 07/10/2018 at 8:40 pm

I’m really hoping City will put Liverpool well and truly back in their box today. And I think they will. Liverpool are good, but they looked very ordinary against us the other week (at least they did in the second half) and I just don’t think they’re as good as the hype suggests they are.

City, on the other hand, are the real deal and are capable of playing a brand of football the rest of us can only dream about.

If you want a real pebble beach, you should try Budleigh Salterton.

      • Fatty B 07/10/2018 at 6:44 pm

Thanks. I will consider Budleigh Salterton the next time I want to sit on one of the most uncomfortable surfaces known to mankind and channe my innerl Agatha Christie.

        • 89Spurs 👁 07/10/2018 at 7:51 pm

You could get a deck chair, at very reasonable rates.

      • Ronwol196061 07/10/2018 at 6:45 pm

You surely couldn’t get more pebbly that Brighton.

        • Fatty B 07/10/2018 at 6:47 pm

A lot of people who visit Brighton beach complain of a sore bottom afterwards.

Come come, when we play well I’ll be up and shouting. But if I’m up and shouting when we merely edge a game we ought to have bulldozed, I’ve got no way to up the ante.

I profoundly disagree. Doing your best and losing is demoralising. If you can’t win when you’re at the top of your game where do you go? If you win playing badly you know things can get better and the winning become more. convincing.

Evening all, good read Fats and I especially like this reply of yours.

This example can be used for many things, not just football.

    • Chauvelin 07/10/2018 at 8:25 pm

It’s said that winning is habit forming, but bear in mind Tim Sherwood has the highest win ratio so it may also be pance.

      • Superspoz 🏆 07/10/2018 at 8:36 pm

The aim of the game is to achieve what you set out to do, like riding your bike home. You could do a wheelie all the way then fall off on the last corner or wobble all the way and avoid a couple of collisions but get home safe and sound. Confidence will come in time.

    • Fatty B 07/10/2018 at 9:11 pm

Yep. They seem to be regarded as a sort of ‘people’s team’. The whining gets.

Salt of the Earth types weren’t they? But I remember Souness and friends winning by foul means if fair didn’t work. They called him hard, when what they meant was a dirty bastard.

The problem I suspect is that MoPo knows what he wants/gets from Sissoko, and Sissoko gives MoPo what MoPo asks for; whereas Sissoko doesn’t give the fans what the fans think he should.

YES. He’s chosen because he does what the gaffer requires to earn his place. It’s as simple as that.

Well struck, Spurts. Right up the middle.

In a parallel universe somewhere far, far away Lamela is a rock ‘n’ roll star:

  • Shelf 07/10/2018 at 9:17 pm

All in all a good 3 points. We have had enough wobbles recently which coupled with the injuries and rotation have left the players a little nervous and short of confidence. Closing up shop and taking the points is a step in the right direction and better than we did a couple of weeks ago against Watford and Milan.

    • Chauvelin 07/10/2018 at 9:25 pm

Three points, clean sheet, move on.

Now over to the medical and physio staff to get the injured back.

I saw snatches of the second half down the gym. Every time I looked Salah was making a proper mess of shooting/passing/dribbling. Is it possible he’s not a mix of Messi and Kane after all?

We are shit, we are decimated by injuries, we are yet to play at our spiritual home, we have played eight games in the top league in the world 🌍 and we are only two points behind the leaders. We haven’t fucking signed anyone either and if we’d beaten Watford like we set it up to, we’d be top by a point.
I’m looking forward to us hitting a bit of form.

    • Hartley 07/10/2018 at 10:57 pm

We also have what we call in Yorkshire ‘a man bout arms’ in goal, most of the time.

We’re collecting a crocked player every game. This is attrition unseen since the Siege of Vienna in 1683.

Dembele, Eriksen, Aurier back October 20 earliest. Vertonghen November 24, Dele and Rose unknown.

Best get your coaching badges in early, Maurizio.

  • UnkleTaff 08/10/2018 at 10:41 am

The more I see of Harry Winks the more I’m excited by him. His high-octane approach to the the game and his attacking instincts augur well for both him and the team as a whole. He’s only going get better and it’s pretty inevitable, as far as I’m concerned, that he’ll be one of the first names on the team sheet before long. Hopefully he’ll get at least one international run out to hone his match fitness and he’ll come back firing on all cylinders.

Another one, presumably, who’s developed despite the academy and not because of it.
