Bruxie’s Two Pennies Worth

My frustration has subsided.
I was never angry about yesterday. I felt it coming when I saw the team sheet.
Looking at the whole situation at this point in the season, we are in a reasonably good place. We have a decent league position considering our lack of a proper home. We’re still in the UCL and have a hold on a coveted top 4 place.
Arse would swap with us in a heartbeat.
We should remember where we were 4-5 years ago.
However. There’s a glaring gap in quality between our first team and squad players.
We are short of two full backs, a class midfielder and a striker.
Not an earth-shattering revelation, I know. And not one that would cost more than we could afford if we go for the up and coming prospects out there.
The main outlay would be the midfielder. We need a top, top midfielder with a presence and leadership qualities.
We seem to have a gap in the development of young players. Those that have been given a chance this season seem “not quite ready” when we should be able to slot them in more smoothly. We are unfortunate in the sense that they are just a year off the pace.
Skipp is just too young at present and more suited to a spell on loan at a good Championship side. And KWP is in need of more starts or a loan spell too.
Other than the two cups, when can anyone see them starting a game unless we are down to the bare bones?
The performances yesterday highlighted the lack of depth. A missed penalty and a glaring miss from a fringe player did the rest.

Our fixtures are now mapped out. No replays, no away games against cloggers and decent gaps between games.

There are positives to losing yesterday. Not many, but there are some.

  • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 11:35 am

I agree about the need for a top class deep midfielder. I think it’s important to for any team to have a strong spine, a quality midfielder would ensure we retain that.

    • Sexy beast 28/01/2019 at 11:45 am

Dembele in his pomp, sad his body couldn’t have held out for a couple more years. We miss him badly.

  • TCY 28/01/2019 at 11:50 am

Good to see you agreeing with yourself Cas. Very healthy from. Psych. perspective.

I’d like to make two general points—

The thin squad leads to injuries for those who get the most minutes. HK first of all is overworked. It wiii shorten his career, certainly his position as a top top player.

Second point—the lads are bright enough to see what’s going on. They want to win and they want to keep those big paychecks rolling in. So why not go to PSG or Bayern or RM where you have top flight subs so you aren’t killing yourself?? Eriksen, Deli, Toby, Son hopefully not HK have to be asking themselves this.

    • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 11:52 am

It’s Bruxie’s bloeug not mine, I just posted it. I do however find it easier when I do agree with myself. 👍

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 12:09 pm

I think most players genuinely want to play as many games as possible. Unless of course they’re coming towards the end of their career and just trying to put off the inevitable. Most ex pros I’ve heard always say that.

      • Shelfy 28/01/2019 at 12:13 pm

I have heard several of our players complain if they were rested saying that they played twice a week a their previous clubs. However I havnt heard it for a few seasons.
Some players clearly can play every game (e.g. Ronaldo) but most can’t without picking up injuries.

  • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 12:01 pm

    From the previous bleoug suggestions on a post card;

What is the point of player retention if the players that you retain win fuck all because they are deemed to good to play?

That question is the greatest conundrum in the history of mankind. Why do you think Newton, Einstein and Hawking took the easy way out and concentrated on Physics.

  • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 12:06 pm

Good post Bruxie, one stat I heard yesterday which I thought worth mentioning was that over a specified time (can’t recall what it was) we’ll have played 21 games compared to Dortmund who will have played 9. Therein lies the problem that unless you have the bench that Citeh have its virtually impossible to try and pursue all 4 competitions. Nothing new but it shows how the rest of Europe cope better than we do.

    • GDawg 28/01/2019 at 12:11 pm

The problem is, how do we buy quality players who would start in most teams in the prem that cost the price of a sub? Competition for places and depth would be great. But at our current position this requires cash and quality players wanting to come to us

      • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 12:16 pm

How is it other teams manage to build strong squads, and somehow we can’t? Todays game relies on a strong squad, not just a good first 11.

        • Shelfy 28/01/2019 at 12:24 pm

Which teams would they be (other than City)?
Her indoors is a ‘pool fan so we watch all there games and they. Have a terrible squad compared to ours. They looked awful in the domestic cups for the last two years.

      • Shelfy 28/01/2019 at 12:17 pm

The issue is wanting to come to us. How many players that are good enough dream of playing for us.
How many of our most expensive signings have been flops? I don’t want us wasting money on a couple of mercenaries that either flop or disrupt the dressing room.

        • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 12:24 pm

All signings are a gamble, although I do feel identifying quality talent isn’t as hard as Spurs sometimes appear to make it, Jannsen and both N’s serve as an example of poor scouting and bad decision making by the club.

          • Shelfy 28/01/2019 at 12:31 pm

Yes most signings turn out to be less than stellar for most clubs.
I keep using Liverpool as an example because I have the misfortune of watching all their games. If we had payed for Moreno at Left back, Lovren, Matip, Klaven at center back, Karius as keeper, Origi and Ings up fornt etc we would be far from happy and that’s just players off the top of my head.
Beyond their starting eleven they have 3 or 4 good reserves and bugger all else.
It is just delusional as HR said to expect Spurs to compete with City and Chelsea and United in the transfer market.
The fact we have closed the gap substantially on Chelsea Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal is excellent…. City are really what cause us the discontent.

            • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 1:00 pm

I don’t expect us to compete financially with those clubs, but I do think we can do better than wasting time and money on players which in my view never had genuine ability in the first place (as mentioned above). I would rather the club adopted an aggressive transfer strategy whereby they identify the best young (up and coming) talent, it’s not as if we’re not an attractive club to play for. Perhaps that would mean less incoming players overall, but I would rather quality over quantity.

      • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 12:20 pm

The tricky bit I think is the wages. We would be much more likely to get a big hitter sitting on the bench if they were paid top dollar. But that raises the issue of commiting much more into the wage bill because we’d probably have to up Kane Eriksen etc but only having revenue, that even with the new stadium, is below Citeh, Manure etc. Do we want to say f*ck it we only live once let’s go for it and if we win the PL CL then it’s been a worthehile gamble. The downside is if we don’t and when then have a huge unsustainable wage bill and for whatever reason we start to move down the division we could be in big do do’s.

        • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 12:27 pm

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you….

    • Sexy beast 28/01/2019 at 12:13 pm

A journo on the Sunday Supplement said that in a specific time frame (might have been two months) before our game with Dortmund we will have played 21 games whilst they will have played 13, this is a massive disadvantage to the Premier league teams and worsened for us getting to the semi’s of the League Cup.

      • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 12:22 pm

Ah, you saw that as well SB (see my post previously) . Thought it was 9 but even at 13 it’s a massive difference.

  • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 28/01/2019 at 12:14 pm

I agree with the Midfielder.Ive said this quite a few times and it is obvious two.
The backs (I think Rose is great but he could do with a reserve, not sure if we can get one better than Davies..not that he is good but quality players dont want to be reserves) On the other side Trippier is weak and Aurier can be a serious liability so Id agree on a new quality player there.
KWP was playing on the wrong wing but he sometimes had lots of space where he could have worked back to his right and hit inswingers in but his choices were not good. To be honest Ive never seen him make one tackle so the jury is out for me.
Skipp and Dier. What a crazy combination for midfield. What did Poch ask them to do? I though most of Skipps passes were sharp and many forward or safely back (two of the forward passes went to Palace players) but I think the kid has a future. Dier was absolutely terrible. There were no central midfielders at all. I dont understand that and nothing creative coming and there was zero creative players.
Im done with the limited Lamela. While he grinds things out, most of what he does is without a solid conclusion.
We were terrible against Arse,United,Chavs and Palace. These are relatively recent games. Also we did well against Everton and Tranmere and maybe another club. Many games we have squeaked by.
Our position in the league is vulnerable to say the least.
As you said Bruxie one Midfielder,a couple of backs and a reserve striker could change that. But the player in midfield is a big question mark. So many rumours over the years…and nothing.
I remember when we played Chelsea in another fiasco.Dembele was sent off etc…it felt the same back then….Poch is holding everything together with thin tape. He is without a doubt part of the problem. We are far from hopeless but its difficult to be hopeful

    • cavey 28/01/2019 at 12:18 pm

Poch is holding everything together with thin tape. He is without a doubt part of the problem. We are far from hopeless but its difficult to be hopeful.

      • Shelfy 28/01/2019 at 12:22 pm

The last manager to get us anywhere close to having a successful team was Redknapp and he was always saying Spurs fans that think we should get into the top four were delusional. Now we are regularly in the top four, not to mention knockout stage of the CL but Poch our current manager who has delivered that delusion is part of the problem… in that case long may the problem continue.

        • Sexy beast 28/01/2019 at 12:55 pm

Yes Yes Yes Shelfy but its painful especially as our position is better than its ever been in general but its tenuous and will continue to be. And are you confident it will ever be. That Poch will stay and our star players will stay. We are not that far from success but not that far from failure either. Picking up players for 4 mil to fit into Pochs plan will always be there. But competing for the CL spots will get tougher. Its tough already. We couldnt beat Arse or United or Chavs

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 12:26 pm

Not sure how he’s part of the problem Ron. If he did what I think you want him to do which is to demand specific players in a back me or sack me then I think he’d be at Manure now.

      • GDawg 28/01/2019 at 12:32 pm

With the current strategy from ownership there is no chance we buy ourselves success like the OPEC blues. Poch developing up and coming youth is not likely to bring us trophies anytime soon. But he keeps us in the hunt year in year old and I for one feel we are lucky to have him

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 28/01/2019 at 1:04 pm

Poch agrees with Levy. If you think thats ok then fine. When it works nobody says anything. But the views will go up and down with results ultimately.

      • Ronwol1960-61🕎⚽🎷🎥 28/01/2019 at 1:06 pm

he doesnt demand anything. He is happy the way it is. He is compliant or he is in 100% with Levy.
If we do well that will be great. If not its all Levys fault.

        • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 1:45 pm

We’ve had this discussion before Ron and I’m sure we’ll have it again. We both have views that are based on our experiences in life. Mine are working in an environment all my working life where the boss was king. Stick your head above the parapet in any signicant way and your history. Doesn’t matter how valuable you think you are, youre gone. Yours I suspect (forgive me if I’m wfong) is where you have something that your boss desperately wants so you can dictate to a degree what you want and get it.
We don’t know what, if anything, Poch has demanded. We do know that Levy can be trigger happy. It’s the old known unknowns again.

          • Ronwol196061 28/01/2019 at 2:00 pm

I don’t think it’s to do with Levy. The question is does Poch think he is good enough to manage a bigger club.
            Its leverage more than Levy.

            • Ronwol196061 28/01/2019 at 2:01 pm

In my estimation Levy needs Poch more than Poch needs Levy.

              • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 2:09 pm

Absolutely agree 👍. It’s the bit about how much Levy needs Poch is the unknown. If Poch was the only manager in the world that could give levy what he wanted whether its on the pitch or the delivery of an investment then its a a slam dunk. But do you really think no other manager could deliver success? At the moment Poch is Levy’s wet dream, he couldn’t ask for more but if Poch tried to push Levy into a corner he didn’t want to be in I still maintain that as much as its a marriage made in heaven Levy would politely tell him not to let the door hit his backside on the way out.

          • UnkleTaff 28/01/2019 at 2:09 pm

The way I see it is that both need each other as much as the other needs him.

Levy’s got himself a top-class coach who is capable of working on a budget and getting the most out of the players at his disposal.

Pochettino has been given the opportunity of a lifetime: a chairman who has allowed him to put his stamp on the entire running of the club from top to bottom.

Both appreciate the other and neither is stupid enough to think there’s a better deal to be had elsewhere.

  • Spursy 28/01/2019 at 1:19 pm

The truth of the matter is that without all the injuries we’d be in a final in February.

We have all the injuries because of overplaying because the backups generally aren’t good enough.

The backups aren’t good enough because they’re either, as Bruxie said, a year or two behind schedule or not going to ever be good eniugh.

This part of the problem falls at Levy’s door and to some extent at Poch’s. Poch doesn’t criticise Levy in public but he must sure want to kick his butt.

They want to assemble a winning squad over the next five years. I don’t want to be old when we win something 😓😭😢

It’s ridiculous that the rules mean that England international Eric Dier counts as a non-homegrown player. There should be provision within the rules that youngsters who were taken overseas (parents might be stationed in Cyprus with the RAF for instance) are a special case.

    • UnkleTaff 28/01/2019 at 1:37 pm

It’s even more ridiculous that Ben Davies isn’t considered homegrown given that Swansea play in the Premier League.

      • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 1:41 pm

Does this mean all of Cardiff’s and Swansea’s academy players would be classified as non-home grown in a EUFA competition?

How is it other teams manage to build strong squads, and somehow we can’t? Todays game relies on a strong squad, not just a good first 11.

We do have an extremely strong squad Cas, you simply can’t get away with 37 injuries in just over half a season, that’s pretty much impossible imo.

    Our squad:

    Vorm (Upgrade required)

    Davies (Upgrade required)
    Tripps (Upgrade required)

    (Dembele replacement required)

    Fernando (Upgrade required)

That’s a near brilliant squad of 24 first team players, one of the strongest in the league which only requires a few upgrades as detailed.

    • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 1:43 pm

Ah, but if they were all out injured our squad would be garbage (copyright The Boy H).

      Levy out!

    • Glenda 28/01/2019 at 2:06 pm

Couldn’t agree with this more. We have had horrendous injury luck this season but the squad is good. All those crying out for change for changes sake need to understand that you may end up with worse than those currently there

      We have 2 problems.
One is shortage of top 5 club reserves
      or rotation players.
The second is a class top notch Midfielder with talent and a footballing brain to match.. Even more difficult.
We need also more of the tiger killer instinct. I can’t help feel that Poch on the sidelines would give us that if he were a player and expects it.
While your list seems impressive we were seriously void of it (killer instinct) in both cup games and also against Arsenal and vrs the resergent United.
All things are easy to spin except results. That will have the final word.

  • Levymealone 28/01/2019 at 2:29 pm

    It is so easy to claim our scouting / choice of players has been poor – providing you have the benefit of hindsight. Why did we buy;

Soldado – Third top scorer in La Liga the previous season behind Messi & Ronaldo
Paulhino – Player of the tournament for Brazil that summer
Janssen – Dutch international striker with 27 goals in 32 appearance for AZ

All good reasons for making those purchases, problem is they never worked out. Knowing what we know now, they look like bad choices – but at the time most of us could see the logic behind signing them.

    • UnkleTaff 28/01/2019 at 2:31 pm

Same with Llorente: an experienced Spanish international whose goals effectively saved Swansea from relegation the year before and who was well versed in the ways of the English game to boot.

      • TCY 28/01/2019 at 2:47 pm

Yes but already past his prime when purchased.

    • Sexy beast 28/01/2019 at 2:36 pm

    • MiT 28/01/2019 at 5:06 pm

      Outstanding point.

  • Goatboy333 28/01/2019 at 2:37 pm

If we continue to buy around the 10-20 million mark then we’ll probably get more misses than hits. Under Poch I think we’ve only bought 3 out and out successes – Dele, Toby and Son. The rest are unproven or proven not good enough.

    • Sexy beast 28/01/2019 at 2:45 pm

Soldado was £29m odd but a player like him now cost how much? My guess is at least twice that.

  • Goatboy333 28/01/2019 at 2:39 pm

…and Poch has been with us 4 and half years. 3 successes in that time is not the best recruitment record.

    • UnkleTaff 28/01/2019 at 2:43 pm

To be fair, his record at Southampton wasn’t that great either.

      • Hartley 28/01/2019 at 3:46 pm

To be fair his record at Espanyol wasn’t that great, he left them bottom of the league by mutual consent.
I personally think that he has improved us by a country mile and works wonders with individual players (He got Ricky Lambert into the England team) but he hasn’t won a pot in his career and the FA Cup was there for the taking, we can beat anybody on our day. He fucked up on Sunday.

        • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 3:51 pm

To be fair Espanyol had financial problems and were continually selling all their best players when Poch was there, by the end he was virtually having to play the youth team.

          • Hartley 28/01/2019 at 3:53 pm

            To be fair they were.

            • Hartley 28/01/2019 at 3:55 pm

But if he hadn’t been so good at improving individual players no one would have bought them, so it was his own fault, to be fair.

              • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 4:01 pm

              • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 5:01 pm

That is to be fair, a good point..

          • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 3:57 pm

I also read that so far 59 year old Sarri has never won a pot in 28 years of management. Pochettino isn’t alone there, and it’s hard to get past the moneybags clubs. Is it a coincidence that Cheatski and City are in the first final?

        • Sexy beast 28/01/2019 at 4:03 pm

What was his chances of winning something at Espanyol or Southampton? Slim to none and slim had long since left town. We get beaten to near death with the “you ain’t won nothing” by fans of other teams and it is waring us all down but when he took over at Spurs we would surely have taken what he has delivered with virtually no money to spend in four and a half years.
I for one am more than prepared to be patient for a trophy as winning one with Pooch as our manager will be worth so much more to us than some state run financed club or even worse a nations stolen assets funding any success we might have.

          • Shelfy 28/01/2019 at 4:09 pm

            I agree.
I would be happy with where we are if we had a net spend a hundred million higher! In fact I sometimes think if we had ‘splashed the cash’ to get where we are some people would be happier!
I am convinced that Poch will buy players he wants that are available and want to come to us and I am convinced that Levy will allow the money to be spent (within reason – say 50 to 60 mil transfer and up to 200k per week wages).
I just don’t think there are that many players who fit the bill.
In the last summer window I can’t think of many players that fitted the bill that we could have got.

  • TCY 28/01/2019 at 2:44 pm

He’s had a good record on the pitch in that time. The starting XI in that time has bee pretty stable.

My fear is that with the injuries and the lack of momentum upwards the current excellent squad will start to crumble.

Not everyone has DL’s fiscal attitude, certainly not a bunch of young guys whose best earning years are maybe 9 or 10.

I fear that the side is no longer all that young and may start to bottom out without ever reaching the heights.

  • foeorfreund 28/01/2019 at 5:20 pm

Nicely blogely Bruxtarrrrrr, agree with all, speshley what is needed.
I also don’t think it’ll be too long before we need at least one centre back. Verts hasn’t been quite the same since his latest injury, not long back so will give him the benefit of the doubt for now, but not sure he’ll still be the force he has been come the end of his contract. And if Tobes does go, Juan and (especially) Davinson will need some experience alongside them.

    • foeorfreund 28/01/2019 at 5:22 pm

…and if I’m a really good boy, maybe Santa will get me an upgrade on Moura. Like him, but he needs to get better, and I’m not sure he will.

      • Ronwol196061 28/01/2019 at 5:25 pm

I think Moura has good skills and was impressed with him earlier. Really expected more.. He is now a tryer…trys to do something but lacking something. Losing patience with him but he isnt alone. Lamela too and some others

        • foeorfreund 28/01/2019 at 5:28 pm

Yep, though I think Lamela brings more all round. I’m happy with him as a squad player.
Losing patience with Davies, Trippier, Aurier, full/wing back is a massive issue.

With Llorente game more about the head that the foot.. What genius decided that our players be devoid of crosses in this one?

Also penalty kicks are a gauge of how confident players are, as the only mitigating factor is possibly the goalie.
    How does that add up.

    • Shelfy 28/01/2019 at 5:26 pm

Big 3 games coming up – Watford, Newcastle and Leicester. In normal circumstances you’d hope for and expect 9 points but without Kane and Dele, and perhaps a dip in morale, I’m not so sure.

Prioritising the league with a limited squad is fine if you then go on to win these games. Drop points and the 2 cup exits become even harder to swallow.

Really need a run of 3 wins to go into the Dortmund game with some momentum. Thank f*%k Son’s back.

Emilio Sala and his pilot tragically go missing, and yet dear old Colin thinks it’s all about him. He’s had a very bad week, apparently. Colin, I think others, like the missing men’s family, have had a far worse week.

            Morning, long suffering fanatics.
Another day of rumours of new players, sitting uncomfortably with the knowledge we’ll surprise no one by doing nothing this window. Then Levy can be smug by being the only chairman who hasn’t put his hand in his pocket to buy for a calendar year. He can frame the headlines in his office next to the ‘only club never to buy in the summer window’ headlines from last August.
You may point out that it’s not Levy, it’s Poch who has declined the option to go and buy. That doesn’t make me feel better. There’s a dynamic between the two of them which feels like a kind of constipation which is in need of a massive enema to clear the blockage. It looks increasingly unhealthy for the club.

  • UnkleTaff 28/01/2019 at 7:41 pm

For the record, I don’t blame Pochettino at all for his team selection yesterday. We’ve had a most horrific run of bad luck with injuries and this was just a game too far. Had we been in, say, Liverpool’s position regarding injuries I’m sure we’d have named a much stronger starting line up and, in all probability, would be relishing the prospect of a virtual bye into the quarter finals now. As it was he thought he could get away with naming a weaker team but sadly it was not to be.

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 28/01/2019 at 7:43 pm

Tend to agree but he should have had Eriksen on the bench in case of emergencies.

Well I could, but it wouldn’t be very convincing.

        • cavey 28/01/2019 at 7:49 pm

The stupidity of naming a weakened team is twofold. You stand a much better chance of going out in round to a crap Palace team and secondly, if your lucky you might get a draw, hense add to the log jam.

          • UnkleTaff 28/01/2019 at 7:55 pm

    • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 11:13 pm

Do the journos have three sacks at their disposal?
      Sack One: players
      Sack Two: destination clubs
      Sack Three: transfer fees.

      And a blindfold of course.

“Whose turn to draw today’s exclusive codswallop?”

  • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 11:24 pm

Kieran Trippier is one player I would definitely cash in if a stupid offer materialised. His fall from grace has been more like a plummet.

    • Ronwol196061 28/01/2019 at 11:25 pm

Such was said about Kyle Walker Bonzo… Now who say that?

      • Chauvelin 28/01/2019 at 11:31 pm

To be honest, I don’t follow Walker at City. I suspect he is a small bit part player up there if the truth be told. Pep gets who he wants, money is no object and he could probably ask for half a dozen right backs and get them all.

        • Ronwol196061 28/01/2019 at 11:39 pm

Walker was really good when he started there….
They don’t need backs there. No other team bothers going into the City half.
We on the other hand have secret weapons. Right backs that we drop behind enemy lines in Left wing positions and attempt to attack from there…. Okay they didn’t work this time but next time we use 8 right backs on that side

    • Ronwol196061 28/01/2019 at 11:26 pm

Next it will be 75mil for Davies

      • Caspurs 28/01/2019 at 11:29 pm

  • MiT 28/01/2019 at 11:51 pm

Bruxie, a nice read. Crystal Palace are no mugs, and most recent matches against them have been 1 goal affairs. Legitimate derby that should be taken seriously. I felt a bit of a lack of faith in the pre-match squad Poch went with as well.

I was actually buoyed ny the second half, and really felt like Spurs could have drawn or won that match. Some of the squad players are not as far behind as it looks.

I agree on Skipp. He is not ready. Moves only to safe space, and plays safely to avoid mistakes rather than playing bravely to make his mark. That being said, Skipp did have some very good moments. He simply needs a bit of work to get to the level of facing a full strength Palace side.

I believe KWP is ready. He is obviously a bit limited on the left, but I like him at this point ahead of both Aurier and Trippier on the right. A Rose and KWP pairing is a pretty solid option, but a 3rd spot PL squad should be better.

I patently disagree with those who feel like Lamela is a weak spot. Spurs have 3 players who are brave enough to constantly move off the ball to link up into the tight spaces. Kane, Alli, and Lamela. If Lamela’s touch is off, it is because he does not play enough… but if Spurs could get all of their players to make use of those tight spaces like those 3, Spurs would more routinely break down packed spaces instead of the maddening perimeter and back play.

Anyway, I was fairly pleased with the play in the second half. The shots simply needed to go in.

Pochettino is wanting to sign some players, but he is fiercely loyal to his squad. He does not want to take squad places away from players who are already there.

I feel like Pochettino’s interview answers are clear. Levy’s policies need to change. If there are bad fits within the squad, SELL THEM so that we can properly REPLACE THEM. Stop dillying around with the last details, and get rid of the poor fits in time to sign some quality.

I believe that message is quite clear when people read what Poch is truly saying rather than looking only for the tidbits they wanted to know.

Levy’s micromanagements have truly hamstrung Poch and his squad, in personnel, in venue, and in funds available. I truly want to see a new stadium that is worth all the challenges heaped on these lads.

    • HD 🇺🇸 29/01/2019 at 12:20 am

It feels increasingly unhealthy for the club.

    • Chauvelin 29/01/2019 at 12:28 pm

Tielemans has been an ever present for Monaco this season, hardly ever substituted off. He’s got three and a half years to go on his contract and he’s available for a bargain $20 million?

Something isn’t right here. Either the story is totally made up, his agent is trying to get him a pay rise, or he’s converted to Scientology.

Undoubtedly. If a high quality midfielder goes to Leicester, it will feel like a betrayal.

Fun and games in the House of Commons. The EU hue and cry is something to behold.

  • Caspurs 29/01/2019 at 3:22 pm

My unrealistic view on a midfielder that I feel could fit into the team would be (now Frenkie’s gone) Tanguy Ndombele.
His style of play is similar to Sissoko in that he has the ability to break the opposition play up, and drive forward from deep with the ball, helping the transition from defence to attack. The added bonus of a player like Ndombele is that he has far better technical ability than Sissoko.
I know he’ll cost a pretty penny (circa £70m), but here’s my cunning plan; we sell Sissoko for £25m’ish, that way the real cost of the deal would be £45m’ish, what’s not to like?
I’ve sent a message via a carrier pigeon apprising Levy of this most ingenious plan, and will update everyone when I hear back from our Daniel. 👍

I know its a bit nerdy but I actually like to listen to all of Poch’s press conferences. He has been very very consistent in what he says over several years.
He never gives away anything about who we are interested in or who might be leaving, no hints no innuendo nothing… and I like that.
He does talk consistently about what we are trying to achieve and how we are doing it and I am fully on board.
The negative headlines in my opinion are always when something is taken out of context and generally is the press trying to find a ‘disagreement’ between Poch and Levy.
I read the guys book, I avidly follow what the club ‘says’ through its official channels and it makes me very confident indeed that we are rapidity heading in the right direction.

    Pochettino’s press conference today.

“I love my job, I love my job. And of course I love a big challenge,” he said.

“I am a very positive person and I am going to try and deliver in my job. I am going to going to stick with the club until the end to help the club achieve all they want.

“When I arrived at Tottenham I knew very well the challenge will be tough and what happen now will happen now.

“We are victims of our own success, the club was in a different level. No one believed in us, no one believed the way we operated from beginning will bring success to club.”

Great words, this is what we needed to hear.

Mauricio has just in his pressy that to be the best team in the world you need a world class stadium and a world class training facility. Bullshit Mauricio, what you need is the best players and a proper squad so you can rotate properly. But then again if your owners are land development investors that will be the mantra. Mauricio is playing to the party lines. The owners aren’t really interested in football, they’re interested in profit, why else would the development of a new stadium be only about 35% of the overall development. I agree with Keith Burkenshaw ‘there used to be a football club over there’.
It was unforgivable to throw the FA Cup game with Palace and Mauricio justified that with calling winning cup games good for the ego, nothing else.
I’m not a happy bunny. Rant over.

    • Shelfy 29/01/2019 at 4:12 pm

      Interesting perspective.
But in my opinion he is right. The best players want to play for the best teams who have the best facilities etc. and also pay well – which is predicated on having a sugar daddy or having a great stadium filled every week because the team is very good and successful.
It is a chicken and egg situation and Poch and Levy are correct that it takes time.
I was thrilled when Rednap got us to the top 4 and into the CL once.
I am more thrilled that Poch has done it 3 years in a row and we are on target for another top four finish this year.

The last three winners of the FA Cup were Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. None of them finished in the top four.

If Spurs had won this year’s FA Cup but finished outside the top four, critics would accuse us of risking losing our best players because they want Champions League football.

I was going to submit this for a bloeug as a discussion point…

    Thinking outside the box.
Barca have been touting the sale of Malcom in order to free up funds and places for a stellar signing to their squad, as well as making little effort to comply with FFP rules.
Now if I was chairman of a team in competition with Barca, I wouldn’t make a bid for Malcom.
RM & Barca spread discontent around the footy world by using the press to drum up rumours that they are interested in every player who fulfils their “star rating”.
This creates instability and discontent within clubs further down the food chain.
Manure still attempt to do the same and PSG are new to the game. Citeh & Liverpool do the same to a lesser extent.
Doesn’t it make sense for every team to NOT buy anyone from any of those clubs. Let them stew with these “not needed” players in their reserves whilst being paid and not playing. They wouldn’t then have enough room in their squads to buy anyone’s top players or indeed wage a rumour campaign through the press. Chelsea just hijack other’s deals with bigger wage offerings.
Creating a situation whereby top players from other clubs think twice before joining any of the above is that simple…provided nobody buys any of their existing players.
    A simplistic view I admit.

But it would be the rest of football railing against the money laden FFP cheats and more a more effective strategy than EUFA could ever implement.

There are counter arguments, of course.
Clubs who would like one or two of the supposed super clubs’ players who stagnate in their reserves, will be more than tempted to buy such players to improve their own lot. Understandable, but by doing so they free up space in the top clubs’ squads and the whole cycle starts again!
Rumour – discontent – sale…rumour – discontent – sale. A merry-go-round. That’s how you stay at the top of the food chain.
Also, how on earth do you implement such a strategy between competitors in the less cash rich strata of football?
You can only do it by contacting your fellow chairmen and making an unofficial agreement to implement said strategy and to promise not to do unto others as you wouldn’t have done to yourself.
Southampton would be a case in question. Liverpool raped them of all their good players and Tottenham took their manager.
I doubt though, that Southampton were subjected to the same level of press manipulation that Barca and Real Madrid employ today. My conscience is clear on that one!
Wouldn’t such a strategy be against restriction of trade rules? The answer lies in whether or not the use of the press to further their own ends is a valid form of industrial espionage…if there is such a thing.
Are Tottenham innocent in all of this?
I can remember Richard Gough playing for us for one season. He then moved to Glasgow Rangers to whom Dundee Utd, his former team, would not sell. I always suspected that we played some part in facilitating a move which Dundee Utd would never have agreed to. We got a very good player for one season.
Do we use ulterior methods of recruitment?
I don’t know. If we do, then most of the rumours and links to players don’t work!
All the above is of course pie in the sky and the only alternative that I can think of to the wishy-washy FFP rules and even weaker policing of the clubs who ride roughshod through our favourite sport for personal kudos and fantasy football ambitions.

A nice idea but as you suggested it won’t work because someone will always grab a bargain.

        Levy wouldn’t!

      • Bruxie 29/01/2019 at 4:45 pm

        No, that’s a counter argument.
There’s a second string group of clubs, including us, who could make it work.

        • Bruxie 29/01/2019 at 4:47 pm

Barca & RM reserves wouldn’t sign for anyone less…and if we didn’t bid…?

        • Shelfy 29/01/2019 at 4:49 pm

I think it balances itself out. The rich clubs pay the highest wages and transfer fees. The smaller clubs get the big transfer fees and have to carefully reinvest them.
Every now and then a big club takes a financial hit because it is stuck with an expensive player on high wages that they don’t want and they have to sell for a big loss to get rid.
The question is if FFP was properly implemented they couldn’t subsidize their mistakes like they do now.

          • Bruxie 29/01/2019 at 4:52 pm

            You are missing the point.

If nobody bid for that failure…they’d be stuck with him.

I thought you had replied a bit quick!

I did understand it and read it all. It is similar to what you suggested a few days ago. I even told her indoors about it then.
The issue is someone will always bid.
The taping up part now that is where we should focus on tighter rules and enforcement

              The free market dictates prices
Its fine telling other people what should they should do but what would you really do.
People tend to look for the quality they need at the best deal. If prices are the same or very similar they will buy from the better source but if there is a vast difference.99.9% would buy from the more reasonable source if the service is reasonable etc.

I thought Richard Gough’s wife couldn’t settle south of the border. I hadn’t given any thought to the possibility of shenanigans at play. Such naivety!!
