BOGOF anyone?

Matt Law in the Daily Telegraph reporting today that our beloved Janssen is available for £12m meaning Levy has sanctioned a £5m loss from the £17m we paid for him. At the same time the Daily Mail is reporting that Burnley are showing interest at the apparent £15m price asking price. Janssen has, according to the Mail, turned down a loan move to Sevilla recently as he prefers a permanent move. He’s scored once for the U23’s and provided 3 assists in their last three games. His contract with us comes to an end in 18 months and the Telegraph report that there’s also been tentative interest from China and the MLS. Shirley a Holland International has to be worth the £12/£15m at todays prices?
Our other forgotten man (until Sunday) GKN is rumoured still to be surplus to requirements and is priced at £10m, cheap at half the price.

First time since 1980 away goals don’t count in the Semi Final, so in any of the last 38 years we would have gone through on away goals.

    • Caspurs 25/01/2019 at 11:17 am

With the old rules the away goal would have only counted after extra time, so it’s no guarantee we would have gone through.

    • cavey 25/01/2019 at 11:18 am

Don’t be silly, Chelsea would have got another goal!

      • Levymealone 25/01/2019 at 11:36 am

Probably true – and Lamela would have missed when clean through but flagged for a close offside, even though with VAR in use the referee should have allowed play to continue and then review it. Notice how we never got a var line photo of that offside call – I suspect it would have really put the cat among the pigeons.

He’s the sort of player you can build a team around. If we had any sense we’d slap 40mil on the table & offer him around £180k a week. Unfortunately for us, if the de Jong rumours of 300k euro a week for a 21 year old are true, he’ll probably hold out for Barca, they’ll likely blow us out the water on the salary front.

Not the result of course…but the participation of being a yid in scumland.

Crap stadium… no hand rails on the upper tier and not good for a Parkinson’s old timer like me. Needed the shoulders of the stewards to lean on on the way down. Very good of them.

We improved when Davies left proceedings and out played ’em for much of the 2nd half. Not bad for a second string attack.

The support was magnificent. I’m hoarse, aching and not wholly disappointed.

We need a pick-me-up and a new signing. Just one. But a good one.

        • Caspurs 25/01/2019 at 12:31 pm

I will always have a soft spot for the old football grounds of yesteryear. I appreciate they were not designed to be converted to all seater stadia, but I loved the fact that every stadium was distinctive from another. Grounds evolved stand by stand, sometimes many years apart (as WHL did), this gave each ground it’s own distinctive character, something I used to really like when visiting other grounds in the early 80’s.

    Davies.

The difference when Danny came on was so evident.

Why do we persist with him when a fit Danny sits on the bench?

It’s my only criticism of the selection.

I mentioned earlier that I think over the next month we need to be playing our STRONGEST team every game. No matter what.

Strongest team means playing “tired” players on game after the other.

Winning teams did it in the 80s, 90s and 00s…let’s get this season rolling again.

    • McG ⚽⚽ 25/01/2019 at 12:29 pm

100%, does my head in, why does he keep persisting. If Davies was in top form, I could poss understand it, but he’s been below par for most of the season

    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 25/01/2019 at 12:41 pm

As much as I want to agree Bruxie I think there’s definate correlation between fatigue and injury. Playing the same team would inevitably result in them and I think it’s no coincidence that some of our injuries are as a result of the WC and the lack of down time before the new season.

      • UnkleTaff 25/01/2019 at 12:44 pm

Yurp. Given the amount of work the modern wing back has to get through it’s entirely reasonable that they are alternated from game to game. We really need four high quality players for those positions; at the moment it looks like we only have one (although I remain convinced that Walker-Peters will eventually become another one).

        • McG ⚽⚽ 25/01/2019 at 3:37 pm

Yeah, I’m really hoping KWP makes it too, likey.

      • Caspurs 25/01/2019 at 12:46 pm

Not to mention that the game is payed at a faster pace nowadays, and modern pitches are far harder (under foot) than the pitches of the 80’s, which takes it’s toll (physically) on players these days.

        • Bruxie 25/01/2019 at 12:53 pm

I guess Poch hasn’t yet fully accepted Danny Rose for what he has said in the past. I do think though Rose is now talking with his feet. He will be our number one if he continues with that

    • Chauvelin 25/01/2019 at 1:10 pm

Davies, one assist this season in over 2000 minutes of footie.
Rose, three assists in 1200 minutes. Five times the rate.

Is the issue that Davies was one of Pochettino’s first buys? He’s a Poch pick, and our manager is as stubborn as a mule.

      • Ronwol196061 25/01/2019 at 1:14 pm

Rose is tough both in defence and attack. Quality.

        • Chauvelin 25/01/2019 at 1:17 pm

I’d rate Davies as a third choice left back and emergency CB. If he was happy to fill that role and play mainly early rounds of domestic cup games and a bench warmer, keep him but buy Chilwell or Tierney as Rose’s competition.

          • Bruxie 25/01/2019 at 1:23 pm

Chilwell will be out of our reach price wise now, we need to identify an emerging Chilwell not an established one, and I have read that Pep fancies him at Citeh so £50m will be roughly what he goes for. Sadly!

              • Bruxie 25/01/2019 at 1:34 pm

                Perhaps we could buy Mendy?

      • Bruxie 25/01/2019 at 1:22 pm

        1) Davies does not “take a player on” and rarely passes forward;
        2) He’s slow;
        3) Other players would prefer not to pass to him – Verts ALWAYS gets the ball back from him, so why bother?
        4) He’s not a wing back…he’s a full back and stops us having a back three when Rose is injured.

Bruxie, Thanks for sharing and your indomitable spirit. I was seriously down after last night until I saw the great banter among you and the lads about the game. Stay on your meds. I’m sure you will be with us for many years—who knows? Maybe until we win a pot! Guys, thanks for cheering me up. . . .

    Hurry home Sonny, and COYMFS!

  • TCY 25/01/2019 at 3:09 pm

BTW agree that DR is generally just what the doctor ordered for our attack. Bringing Davies on is equivalent to a DNR—do not resuscitate order.

    Sonny days are here again
The skies above are clear again
Let us sing a song of cheer again
    Sonny days are here again
    Altogether shout it now
There’s no one who can doubt it now
So let’s tell the world about it now
    Sonny days are here again
Your cares and troubles are gone
They’re be no more from now on
    Sonny days are here again
The skies above are clear again
Let us sing a song of cheer again
    Sonny days are here again
So long sad time, so long bad time
We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times, cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past
Sonny days are here again 🎵

The Sun report that Levy will make a £20 million bid for Rabiot but PSG will need to arrange cover and are looking at Everton’s Idrissa Gueye.

I’d normally laugh this one off, but as our last two transfers were also from PSG and in the same ballpark for money, and Lucas came in the previous January window, it might have some substance.

    • Sexy Beast 26/01/2019 at 9:36 am

Levy pay £20m for a player with months left on his contract? Somehow I doubt that.

      • Chauvelin 26/01/2019 at 10:15 am

It’s all relative surely? A player who could be worth a sell on of 70-80 million must be of interest.
Plus, we are always hearing that Levy wishes to back up Poch if there is a player he wants. In the current market 20 million buys you half a Grealish…

        • Sexy Beast 26/01/2019 at 10:27 am

Mackay was my favourite player Andy. You had to look at his face during a game to know the confidence he had and the power he bestowed onto the whole team. Danny B was the tactician who was brilliant. Between them there was more substance and soul than Ive ever seen in two players. They made everyone else great on the team and they oozed confidence with the fans.

Behind Mackay at left back was Henry who literally started doing the same things as Dave (great slide tackles etc) after watching Mackay. On the other side John White was inside right in front of Blanchflower and White was very influenced by Danny and together they were the creators

                    • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 26/01/2019 at 11:34 am

Well when you think about it I spose it is a principality, very much like Monaco.

              • Bruxie 26/01/2019 at 11:35 am

He was our first “full” Scottish cap.
                He got 22 in all.
                The last in ’65.

                • Caspurs 26/01/2019 at 11:37 am

Only 22 caps? Wow! I thought it’d be more than that.

                  • Bruxie 26/01/2019 at 11:42 am

I think his first 3 or 4 were with Hearts.
He also represented the Scottish League XI on a few occasions.

The home leagues played each other regularly but no caps were given. You had to play in that league to represent you nation.

Play in your native league to be selected to play for your country?! Well I never knew that.

Yes, always enjoy his stuff and this was no different. Point 2 on the second half and Point 4 on Gazzaniga were especially good. I watched the game in a pub with a mate and made the mistake of putting Talk Sport on when driving home. They had a couple of presenters on saying Poch was weak playing Gazza over Hugo and that he should have played his strongest team to get us to the final, especially with our bottler reputation. I still feel Hugo is the better keeper, but don’t believe there’s much in it, and Gazza’s ‘flat’ long-range kicking from his hands is a real weapon in cup matches where games get more stretched than prem ones tend to. That first goal could have happened to any keeper and I think the blame lies with the amount of space we left on the edge of the box. We did that all the way through the game when defending corners. Asking for trouble.

Lloris in a penalty shoot out? No ta.

            • Wasdanspurs 26/01/2019 at 11:54 am

              Totally agree 👍

          • SpurAndy 🥧🍒 26/01/2019 at 11:43 am

Heard Gooner Groves on Talksport the next morning saying the same and bemoaning that Poch gets a free ride and nobody criticises him for not playing Hugo. I agree with you Dan that there’s not much in it. I’d usually favour Hugo for his better shot stopping but it’s a close call.

            • Wasdanspurs 26/01/2019 at 11:57 am

Yes gooner groves was one of the two. Kept going on about our squad depth compared to Liverpool, arsenal and united, whose squads are so strong and so deep they couldn’t even make the carabo semis, let alone take a very up for it Chelsea to penalties over two legs. Plank.

    No.
If you were French and played in the English league – you could play for the league. Not the nation.

    • Bruxie 26/01/2019 at 11:56 am

      To put it simply…

You could represent the league you played in against other leagues.
So, Scottish Club teams V English Club teams.

Ok , this is getting a tad confusing.
    (A) “The home leagues played each other regularly”.
Was this competitive football i.e. European competition?
    (B) “You had to play in that league to represent you nation.”
You could play for your country but it didn’t count as a cap?
    WTF are you saying man!

    • Bruxie 26/01/2019 at 12:08 pm

It’s not your country…it’s your league!

      • Caspurs 26/01/2019 at 12:10 pm

So countries didn’t exist back then?

        • Chauvelin 26/01/2019 at 12:17 pm

International football wasn’t so prominent as it is now.

    • Chauvelin 26/01/2019 at 12:10 pm

This is something that used to happen if you read your footie history. Leagues raised teams and played each other. There used to be more variety in the game.

      • Bruxie 26/01/2019 at 12:11 pm

        Try telling that to Cas.

      • Caspurs 26/01/2019 at 12:11 pm

Sounds like a Ronwol league to me..
